qgin··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
We'll be living in a world of 50% unemployment and still debating whether it's "true AGI"
qgin··on New Alzheimer's Treatment Clears Plaques from Brains of Mice Within Hours
I wonder if this could be used in cases of central amyloid angiopathy. I had a family member whose blood vessels in the brain essentially turned into fragile glass from this (and ultimately hemorrhaged).
qgin··on ChatGPT – Truth over comfort instruction set
The fact that the model didn't point that out to the author brings the whole premise into question.
qgin··on ChatGPT – Truth over comfort instruction set
I tried similar instructions and found it doesn't so much enable Truth Mode as it enables Edgelord Mode.
qgin··on New York Times, AP, Newsmax and others say they won't sign new Pentagon rules
Didn't expect to see Newsman on that list
qgin··on Apple Renames 'Apple TV+' to 'Apple TV'
Apple Music

Apple TV

Makes sense to me. The plus just gave it a vibe of being "bonus content" or something extra, which is a weird thing to emphasize.

qgin··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
Why such a reaction to this statement? Is this not the track we're on?
qgin··on After the AI boom: what might we be left with?
The models get more efficient every year and consumer chips get more capable every year. A GPT-5 level model will be on every phone running locally in 5 years.
qgin··on Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26
People saying it looks dated: that's just because you're old. You remember it from the first time around. Gen Z has a lot of love for "vintage" y2k aero aesthetics and liquid glass lets Apple make a nod to that while not going full kitsch and keeping one foot in the future.
qgin··on The React Foundation
I am always surprised to see the anti-Vercel stuff here. NextJS has repeatedly solved every thing I wanted React to do beyond its out-of-the-box fearures. You can pry NextJS from my cold, dead hands.
qgin··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
I think this is key. I travel nearly zero these days due to a long list of reasons, but the mental exercise of thinking about whether I could travel with my stuff helps me be more conscious about accumulating things that I don’t really need.
qgin··on Sora 2
New grads are already having a tough time. My own expectation is that every recession or downturn from here on out, there will be the typical rounds of layoffs but without the typical increase in hiring afterwards. Maybe no “we replaced you with AI” moment, more of a “no new hiring” tendency.
qgin··on Sora 2
It’s not a good thing, but it’s definitely a thing. Most of us here on HN are going to be affected by this.
qgin··on Sora 2
VFX artists are definitely feeling the AGI / considering other career paths today.
qgin··on Claude Sonnet 4.5
Artificial General Pelicanness
qgin··on Why friction is necessary for growth
Your brain needs a loss function just as much as a model does.

qgin··on Reader Response to "AI Overinvestment"
That’s true, but models have been getting more efficient over time as well.
qgin··on Reader Response to "AI Overinvestment"
There is a real possibility that local, free models keep trailing a few years behind the frontier. If that does happen, then the math for building out all this capacity is that you need to make a profit in that window. Can they recoup a trillion dollar data center capex in 2-3 years?
qgin··on US cities pay too much for buses
Absolutely, there is room for price shopping for a subset of medical treatments. https://surgerycenterok.com is a well-known cash-pay surgery center. If you look through the procedure list, you can see the types of things that lend themselves to this model: lots of orthopedic surgeries, things that are fixes for chronic issues that don't really need to be dealt with on any specific timeframe.

But when you get into the really big, serious, time-sensitive things. Cancer treatment, heart disease, anything that starts with an ER visit... you don't really have an ability or time to "shop around". The demand is inelastic.

qgin··on US cities pay too much for buses
I have a $6500 deductible. I definitely care what things cost because my insurance almost never actually helps pay for anything unless I have an unbelievably bad year.

The problem is that literally nobody can tell me how much anything is going to cost until I get the bill in a month. Not even because they don't want to tell me. Nobody at the desk even knows what my price is going to be because it's all numberwang.

qgin··on A 40-year study finds higher science funding under Republicans
Can we bring this back?
qgin··on Grief gets an expiration date, just like us
I alternate forgetting with disbelief or feeling almost indignant.

"This is so unlike them! They've never just DIED before. They've always gotten through everything." But that is a thing about death. You only do it once.

qgin··on Meta’s live demo fails; “AI” recording plays before the actor takes the steps
I don't think it was pre-recorded exactly, but I do think they built something for the demo that responded to specific spoken phrases with specific scripted responses.

I think that's why he kept saying exactly "what do I do first" and the computer responded with exactly the same (wrong) response each time. If this was a real model, it wouldn't have simply repeated the exact response and he probably would have tried to correct it directly ("actually I haven't combined anything yet, how can I get started").

qgin··on Apple has a private CSS property to add Liquid Glass effects to web content
I do wish they didn't make it bounce and jiggle so much. It changes the whole thing from looking like glass to looking like a gelatinous blob.
qgin··on RFK Jr.'s CDC may limit Covid shots to 75 and up, claim they killed kids
This is wild. I spend most of each day helping my 75+ and disabled parents. I've stayed extremely up to date with my covid shots because I want to reduce the chance that I pass anything to them, either through just not getting infected or being able to get over it as quickly as possible if I do get infected.
qgin··on If my kids excel, will they move away?
It's at least a contender
qgin··on Nepal picks a new prime minister on a discord server days after social media ban
Even with no new laws, most countries still have non-automatic decisions to be made just as part of the structure.
qgin··on Nano Banana image examples
Does the Nano Banana naming imply the existence of Regular Banana or even Mega Banana?
qgin··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
It's just for registrations that are associated with EU based iCloud accounts.
