pyrhho··on Thorium nuclear reactors: a possible solution of the energy crisis? (video)
FWIW, I recently watched one of the talks this is spliced from, and it seemed fairly accurate.
pyrhho··on Google Calendar Redesign: It's Goddamn Terrible
The worst usability loss is showing multiple events on a day in calendar view. I like to see a calendar view to get an overview but now most of my events have been replaced with a useless '2+ more' or '3+ more'. The real sore point is that the '2+ more' takes up exactly 2 lines of space so they had just enough space to show me my 2 appointments but have decided I'd be much more interested to see this useless '2+ more' link. Outrageous!
pyrhho··on Today's real life is yesterday's science fiction.
You are far too attached your squishy, fragile body..

Edit: To actually add some substance to that, I mean space travel is dangerous, slow, and radioactive, and likely to remain that way for a while. So uploading to a robot really is probably the best way to go visit other planets for a while.

pyrhho··on Solar-Powered 3D Printer that Prints Glass from Sand
Scale it up and build a solid stone building? Anything else medium to large and stone, really. Giant statues?
pyrhho··on Implementing New Cookie Law Drops Use by 90%
Your analogy to real-world "stalking" breaks down a bit. For one, real stores do record customers. It's called security cameras. If you're in someone's store you should assume that they have video of you there. Why should that be any different on the internet? If you visit my "store" I should be free to record that.

Secondly, and more importantly, you make it seem like the user is merely an innocent victim, however the user is choosing to use a browser which accepts and explicitly sends cookies with every request. If they don't like that they are free to turn off cookies in their browser, or use a browser which doesn't accept cookies.

edit: fixing typo

pyrhho··on 10000 things all CS students should do before graduating
Maybe release it at some point? For me, actually shipping things is often the hardest part...
pyrhho··on Geeky Stats About Magic Mushrooms
Apparently Herman Kahn spent his LSD trip finding the best way to bomb China. So there might be something to be said for the theory that it "intensifies" your existing personality/interests.
pyrhho··on It's official: developers get better with age. And scarcer.
The data could also be used to infer that Stack Overflow users are much "better" programmers than non-SO users. Non-SO Users have 0 reputation and are therefore, terrible programmers. While SO users have > 0 reputation, and are therefore, awesome programmers.
pyrhho··on Bjorn Lomborg: Our lifestyle is unsustainable and why that's irrelevant
"Past performance is the best indicator of future performance." Technology has saved our sorry ass in the past, so it is likely to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
pyrhho··on If you develop web apps, don't do this.
There's a mobile version of the blog, though (without the massive header/footer.

- Better Bread? Historically bakers had extremely short lives because without mixers they had to breathe in the flour dust all day. And the bread would have been extremely unevenly cooked (no temperature-regulated ovens), as well as being extremely salty (no preservatives).

- Pasta? Pasta is absolutely amazing. It is an extremely dense source of calories, which doesn't rot, is super-compact, and only requires water and heat to cook. Great for armies on the march.

- Coffee? Coffee's been around a long time, but high-pressure espresso is relatively new.

Other fairly basic staples are newer than you might think, like Potatoes (16th Cent.), Or Tomatoes (17th Cent.)

Edit: Also limes for sailors.

pyrhho··on My Email Canary
The other catch with the ex-girlfriend/boyfriend is that they are not really after bank details so the Barclay's email won't interest them as it would the professional criminal... The problem with the canary is that it is trying to tailor a trap to someone without knowing much about them.

Which is another reason why the IP-based approach works better.

pyrhho··on Enough Is Enough
Apparently it doesn't bring enough guilt to offset the "driving my new Ferrari" satisfaction it brings...

Edit: A bit unfair and stereo-typing.. I'm sure there are good people working at Lodsys that got sucked in...

pyrhho··on Important languages to learn to understand different approaches and concepts
I should elaborate that the point I guess I was trying to make is that a lot of the time we think we have no trouble expressing ourselves "in English" we aren't strictly using "English" to do it.
pyrhho··on Important languages to learn to understand different approaches and concepts
> I've never had trouble expressing myself in the one I have.

What's the english word for 'schadenfreude'? or 'entrepreneur'?

pyrhho··on FBI Tracking Device Teardown
I want a kit! Would be good fun to play with.
pyrhho··on The Don Stewart Method: write code every day, release a project every week
I disagree. Having more released projects increases the chances that at least one of them will succeed, or at least start to show some promise.

Though, it probably depends on the kinds of projects. And assuming, of course, that the quality is decent enough for a first iteration.

pyrhho··on Silicon Milkroundabout: Forget the banks, come and join a London startup
I'm curious how the Non-EU Worker Visas impact things like telecommuting...
pyrhho··on Startup Workaway: 20 founders. 10 days. 1 beach house in Costa Rica. Apply now
Nah, I need breaks man! Can't just be heads-down all day. Your work starts to deteriorate. May as well make your breaks awesome!
pyrhho··on What does your .gitconfig contain?
Aside from the standard stuff I have:

  # Usage: git whatsnew <other_branch>
  # Show commits that are in the current branch,
  # but not in <other_branch>. Great for an
  # instant changelog.
  whatsnew = !sh -c 'git shortlog --format=\"%h %s\" $1..HEAD' -

  # Usage: git omgwtfbbq
  # abort/reset/clean/etc everything back to HEAD.
  # DESTRUCTIVE! Handy if you get git into a
  # really odd state, during a merge, though...
  omgwtfbbq = !sh -c '~/.bin/git-omgwtfbbq'

  # and in ~/.bin/git-omgwtfbbq
    #!/bin/bash

    # Get confirmation from user
read -p "This will erase any work done and reset to HEAD. Continue? [yN] " -n1
    if [[ ! $REPLY =~ ^[Yy]$ ]]
    then
      exit 1
    fi

    echo ''
    # Reset everything
git clean -f && (git rebase --abort || git reset --hard)

pyrhho··on Rate our App: Postman - Built with Node.js, Sockets.IO and more
+1, really beautiful site, and great sales pitch. But I found the product a bit boring (though, I'm probably not the intended audience).
pyrhho··on Online Cash Bitcoin could Challenge Governments, Banks
From a practical standpoint, the Dollar has other problems for using it in a real business -- mainly the fact that it is controlled by a centralized, and potentially incompetent, bureaucracy.

If you are a real, legal business, do you want your entire personal and business future contingent on the ability to exchange dollars with goods and services?

pyrhho··on Livecomments.go - Tutorial in Go, backbone.js, socket.io, and redis
D'oh! meant to run that before posting. Will run that on the code later.
pyrhho··on Livecomments.go - Tutorial in Go, backbone.js, socket.io, and redis
Only 2 languages (Go and Javascript). Lots of frameworks, though... I wanted to learn as much as possible, so why not, you know?
pyrhho··on Livecomments.go - Tutorial in Go, backbone.js, socket.io, and redis
I started this as a project to learn Go, Backbone.js, Socket.io, and Redis. And thought that I may as well turn it into a tutorial in the hopes it helps other people learn too.

It's a live commenting system. Designed to be a cross between a chat-room and blog comments. It's pretty far from being done, but I felt that adding too many more features would make it a bit complex for a basic tutorial.

After I posted it I learned that actually, ending lines in Go with a semi-colon is discouraged, so, hind-sight is 20/20, and I may change that later to be more correct.

Hopefully people find it useful, and learn a bit.

Edit: Should mention, it's fairly basic, so there's no spam protection, or editing, or threads, yet... Eventually I'd like to include it on the page with my blog posts, but it's not quite ready for prime-time yet.

pyrhho··on Stop Panhandling your Ideas
You're turning it into a false dichotomy (of never ship vs always ship all the time). The point is more that you should be finishing stuff (including shipping), instead of starting projects and leaving them half-done forever.
