pxue··on Lessons from America’s astonishing economic record
Debt. So much debt.
pxue··on Lessons from America’s astonishing economic record
Canada is an oligarchy and retirement home for the unproductive.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but this is my conclusion after spending 25 years growing up, living, working and building startups here.

pxue··on AI could replace equivalent of 300M jobs – report
Energy is the obvious problem.

Some 2B people live in constant hot humid weather, if we provide every single one of those people with north american level cooling facility, we'd probably have to increase the world's energy generation by at least 40%. That's no small feat.

Of course there's a difference but at the end of the day, what difference does it make.

Shooting a movie on an iphone pro can be as artistically involved as shooting one in black and white on 8mm film.

pxue··on Ask HN: Would anyone find this system fair?
But realistically salary budgets are in-fact a zero sum game.

Departments have a budget. If someone else is unfairly getting paid more, it definitely means that you will be getting paid less.

pxue··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
OK. i'll give another example.

I played WoW for a good 8 years everyday through high school and college, became great friends with some of the people I played the game with.

When I finished school, I hung up my WoW character and said good bye to my friends in the game.

Although I no longer keep in touch with any of them, those were some of the best 8 years of my life and I am truly fond of the memories I made playing the game and working together.

Is that not the same as a work place?

pxue··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
C'mon that's just bullshit.

Once working, you spend 8h a day with a group of people.

It's by far the easiest way to make friends since the needed repetition of making contact (a minimum requirement for friendship) is already solved by going to work together.

Making friends as an adult is hard. Work is the easiest shortcut in establishing meaningful relationships with strangers.

Edit: addressing some of the comments below.

Some of the commenters describe a friend as someone who will maintain a connection with you no matter the circumstance (loss of job, moving to a new city etc)

I believe that is an unrealistic expectation.

Friend just means someone you have established a platonic relationship with right here right now. You may drift apart in the future, but what's important is that the connection and relationship is genuine and real.

pxue··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
Because going remote first is hard.

Because "you", as an established worker in your industry don't need hand holding guidance.

Remote first will never replace the way impromptu mentor sessions happen in person or after hours. I am extremely glad I had the opportunity for this, and I want to replicate it for the juniors just entering work.

pxue··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles
Nothing. Small government is relating to government run labor boards.
pxue··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles
As a small government advocate, i have no issue with labor boards.

the alternative is violence or unionization, neither of which are optimal in resolving disputes like these in a civilized and efficient manner.

What does the richest do in this situation? Surely some must feel the need for their kids to venture out on their own, or do they live in a neighborhood where these types of policing doesn't happen?

How do you integrate chatgpt with actual up-to-date search results?

Don't you need to retrain the model all the time? Isn't that the most prohibitive part?

Am I missing something?

pxue··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Started a side project on helping short term renters find a place to stay mexico Riviera Maya that's not gringo priced.

Airbnb and lots of foreigners here with lack of local knowledge are jacking up the price.

Knowledge are generally shared in person or over WhatsApp/FB groups, not the most efficient.

pxue··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
"confidently wrong"

That's chatgpt right now. To get it to confidently right will take years and years more

pxue··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Yeah. My experience been this too.

Facebook doesn't act as the central trust authority. So as an expat, most realtor is telling me to avoid FB and use them because scams. But as a user it's inefficient to talk to 20 Realtors for 20 listings.

I just want something in between that doesn't inflate the actual price by 40%

pxue··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Ok I can be wrong. Mexico is a big place.

How would you typically find a place to rent where you live?

pxue··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Facebook marketplace is as trustless as you can get. It's 2010 version of Kijiji/Craigslist with built-in picture upload.

Right now depending on how much effort you want to spend, you can get a place for $2000 usd a month or $600 a month, for relatively similar unit maybe 20min of walk distance apart. Simply because information does not flow freely.

Airbnb fixed the trust issue and dominated rental market in the last few years. But hefty fees + taxes are making them less and less viable for travelers.

I honestly see a big opportunity to just improve the overall experience. Especially considering Riviera Maya is the fasted growing realestate market in Mexico.

If you're serious about working on something like this, email me (check my profile), let's connect.

pxue··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Mexicos overall internet presence is literally stuck in the early 2000s.

Most business' official website are a Facebook page.

In a country of 150M people and growing expat presence, there is a TON of opportunities for software businesses to enter the market.

For example: Riviera Maya has no MLS style real estate tracker/listing platform. The entire real estate industry operates on word of mouth, WhatsApp and Facebook messages.

pxue··on Ask HN: Will Google become a better place to work with a new focus on chatbots?
Yeah this seems impossible to me.

If you use ANY human input to unbais some bias.. it is just pushing down the bais chain.

Is coding up a "Spock" like logic AI a good way to unbias all future AIs?

pxue··on Ask HN: Will Google become a better place to work with a new focus on chatbots?
I could use your opinion on a question I have.

Now that AI are more and more human like, how do you handle inherited bias in the trained models? Further more, how you eventually remove the human decision factor from Ai models?

Search results are machine like so it forces us to process and interlace it with our own thoughts, asking another human triggers our evolutionary mistrust reflex.

But are we ready to blindly trust and let AI tell us what's true and what are good questions to ask?

There was another thread on Sam Altman, the consensus is that the guys willing to do whatever it takes to "win".. I didn't quite understand why Elon is concerned about AI, but I'm now starting to get it.. it's because behind every AI there's someone like SA disregarding every safeguard you should have in order to win

pxue··on Ask HN: How did Sam Altman fail upward so well?
I don't know why you're getting worked up by previous posters quote.

As an Asian American you absolutely can attribute our success to "social engineering", we went from rail road workers to laundry mat owners to Harvard graduates. You can't have these kind of change on the societal perception level without some kind of engineering.

pxue··on Ask HN: How did Sam Altman fail upward so well?
That's the SV way.. winner write the history. It's a cool "being resourceful" story when you don't blow the f up, but it becomes fraud when you do.

pxue··on Things I wish I knew before founding my mental health startup
Do things that don't scale is really an absolute truth.

If you can use Excel spreadsheet or Google form to build your product. Do it for your first 100 users.

Obviously if you're in deep tech then this doesn't apply. But with deep tech and moonshots the value isn't the product, it's your arbitrage opportunity and expert patentable knowledge.
