pwarner··on Stock Market Returns Are Anything but Average
My old job 401K was shifting into the new job 401K, so for a week or so my $ was in a check in the mail between companies, and I think I missed like 2% gain. It's semi real $. It's annoying.
pwarner··on AWS on track to be bigger than IBM by Christmas
I would say it's a close call between MS and AWS in terms of who is the new IBM.

I see them both equally safe in terms of "won't get fired" at this point, although Azure maybe was risky as recent as 3 years ago, they seem stable now.

MS seems to have more of that super sticky engagement with customers that IBM had. Our MS tech teams seem unable to use technology from another vendor. Those on AWS like it and prefer it since it's familiar, but seem more adept at leveraging other technology commercial or open source. That super lock in MS has seems very IBM like to me?

It's a close race for sure.

Maybe they are both IBM, at different points in IBM's history?

pwarner··on Pfizer 91% effective in updated data, protective against South African variant
"whichever one is available to you" is still the right answer since as some other comments suggest there isn't enough data, yet. For sure one is likely better than the others. If we had the data we'd make the choice, but it seems it's not possible to know yet. The better one may be the one that protects against the variant that is forming via mutation right now in some person in Iowa. But yeah, we don't know yet. So you can wait until we know more, for sure eventually in retrospect we may see there is a clear vaccine winner. But really today just get one, or wait and see which one is the winner, with the risks associated with waiting. I think that's the free-agent adult pants decision.

Also, let's say you get vaccine A today. And in 6 months, it turns out you really wanted vaccine B since it's way more effective it turns out. Why can't you just get vaccine B in 6 months? I imagine if vaccine B is the clear winner, they are going to crank up production on that one as much as they can?

pwarner··on EC2 Serial Console
I get this sense they are very conservative in their feature set there? Nested VMs for example are supposed in GCP, Azure and Oracle clouds I think, but not AWS. VM migration too I think exists in GCP at least, but not AWS. It's interesting.
pwarner··on Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for more than $10B
The Slack integrations for SP and Outlook are arguably better than what MS did in Teams.
pwarner··on Sabine Schmitz, Queen of the Nürburgring, Has Died at 51
She could have been a main presenter for sure.
pwarner··on Tracking NFS problems down to the SFP level
Yeah we get major problems in a top 2 cloud provider where our on prem to cloud link dropped packets. We narrowed it down with iperf to the packet loss only happening on some ephemeral source ports. Ports were always ok, or always slow. Destroyed and recreated the cloud gateways and all was well. Should say another engineer figured it out. Cloud provider tried to blame our side. They did not excel at operations...
pwarner··on Cab Ride: Drive a train, forever, through a dreamlike land
I've been watching and unreasonable amount of train cab ride videos on youtube. Some how it's a good way to unwind at the end of the day, and pretend I can actually go somewhere :-)

pwarner··on How long does a bottle of wine last after it is opened?
You don't have to wait for it to warm up. Microwave it. Really. Try it. For best results, use the smaller bottle trick, but the refrigerator adds same extra level of protection and warming it up takes 12 seconds. I drink a fair amount of the same wine (I make it) so I can assure you the fridge + microwave trick tastes the same as a fresh bottle.
pwarner··on How long does a bottle of wine last after it is opened?
Also, forgot to mention. Warm red wine up in the microwave after refrigeration. Really! Try it! Obviously just to get it to room temperature.
pwarner··on How long does a bottle of wine last after it is opened?
The half bottle trick is great. 375 ml is a great amount for 2 to split with dinner. Lets you open a bottle any night and not feel bad about not finishing.
pwarner··on Amazon buys 11 Boeing 767s to expand its cargo fleet
The A380 is harder to load cargo into so they never even built a cargo version. The 747 freighter is still being produced and delivered today! Look up and see a contrail lately and it might be a 747 freighter, they are all flying!

pwarner··on Trading Time for Money
I suggest finding something you like, and do it. I like gardening and cleaning so I do those, but don't like changing oil so I outsource that. I would change my oil it I could stand up doing it!
pwarner··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
Yeah, I mean people with money buying stuff in the free market and prices going up because of increased demand! Yikes! That's California Communism coming to Texas clearly right there!
pwarner··on Salesforce Deal to Buy Slack Expected to Be Announced Tuesday After Market Close
Teams is completely failing to replace Slack in my experience. I think it's must closer to replacing Zoom. I use all 3 daily. Teams is strong in file storage, direct messages and video calling. Slack is strong in channel messaging. I would argue they barely compete, the Slack file storage and video are not great, and the Teams channel messaging is unusable and appears unfixable.
pwarner··on The Pasta King Trusted Us
If you are in the area, there are other amazing old school Italian American experiences that are great.

Two in Petaluma http://www.angelossmokehouse.com/ - the Past King's brother https://volpisristorante.com/

Plus some wineries, although those have lost some of their charm.

pwarner··on The next fleet of Breitbarts is already raking in ad dollars
Maybe real information needs a better PR strategy? What would that look like? I think it needs to be bottom up, at least it can't be centralized.
pwarner··on Election Battleground State Changes
I suspect most states are still counting, but no one is watching. California for example has 2-3 million to count!
pwarner··on Flame retardant may cause hyperthyroidism in cats

pwarner··on The Growing Case for a Microsoft Azure Slowdown [pdf]
GitHub and Azure for sure are the best services from MS. But while the former is easy to use, and I would say the lowest friction for getting developers building and deploying, I think AWS is easier for developers than Azure. Look at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storag... and see the power Azure offers, it's impressive, but it's also confusing. AWS is simpler and still effective.

I think a lot of Azure fast growth was migrating existing corporate IT workloads. These are Windows servers, SQL Server databases, etc and Azure is a great place for those.

But if you are building a new app, I am not quite sure why you would choose Azure unless you are afraid of Amazon.

pwarner··on California issues first rolling blackouts since 2001
https://mobile.twitter.com/california_iso gives heads up on grid issues, stage 2 = grid at capacity, stage 3 = lights start going out for someone.
pwarner··on California issues first rolling blackouts since 2001
Isn't this just a $ decision? Do you build a power point that runs only for 4 hours every 10 years? Batteries may pencil out?
pwarner··on California issues first rolling blackouts since 2001
That's the real question. Even 1 in 10 year load, do you build for it or just live with it? It's just a $ decision.
pwarner··on Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure Controls on Pixel 4 and 4a
They some times back port these, I am unclear if they will or won't here? Agree it would be awesome!
pwarner··on New Relic changes business model, open-sources agents and instrumentation
It's impressive it took them this long in the face of Datadog and who ever else pioneered the open source agent approach. It was such a clear advantage to ensure you knew what was going on your servers, or into your app in the APM case, and of course you could fix / extend it if needed.
pwarner··on Indian IT consultancies struggle against technological obsolescence
Yes, SaaS and even IaaS and PaaS are the ultimate outsourcing. Outsourcing that actually works since it's not simply swapping a US based high paid human for a low paid off shore human. Instead it's swapping a human for automation, that's real savings for customers, even after margin for the automation creator.
pwarner··on Intel grew revenues in Q2 2020, but key manufacturing upgrade delayed
This has got to be interesting for folks like AWS, Google, MS. Is this the opening for AMD? Or will we see things like AWS ARM chips take off? They should both be close to entering production on 5nm chips once TSMC gets enough Apple chips knocked out. Are we going to see more specialization in the form of custom chips as process nodes are stalled out?
pwarner··on Almost one-third of Florida children tested are positive for the coronavirus
Yes, it was the recent failures in CA that I am seeing living here as evidence that the rest of the country, and large chunks of the world, are also doomed to head down the same path. CA had all the right initial steps catching it early, and had every chance to move forward, but could not execute. I imagine Canada, NY and even Europe may end up following, although I really really really hope I am wrong.
