pwarner··on Cloudflare mitigated yet another Okta compromise
What I read between the lines is that CF is going to launch their own IDP, and it'll probably be better done than Okta.
pwarner··on REI is Laying Off 275 Employees
The large decline is from 30% growth to 2%. 30% is insane post COVID bubble. 2% is normal growth

We are going back to normal. Maybe REI hired for the insane bubble continuing?

pwarner··on If the Economy Is So Strong, Why Are Consumer Stocks Tanking?
Most reports of GDP growth use "real" dollars, that is inflation adjusted. Those continue to show growth. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/GDPC1 I mean, the math may be a bit off since measuring GDP and measuring inflation are both imperfect things, but they do try generally.
pwarner··on REI is Laying Off 275 Employees
Consumer spending is up, rising faster than inflation. Although it is growing more slowly than before. https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/consumer-packaged-goods/...
pwarner··on Slack's Google Drive App can share your private Docs and Drive files
I use the OneDrive aka SharePoint integration for slack and I've never seen this issue.
pwarner··on Lumber prices down 11% YoY
Labor to fix your house is still very much more expensive than before COVID
pwarner··on Fine, I'll run a regression analysis but it won't make you happy
Almost everyone was pretty wrong about COVID, at least at some points in time. But it's very rare for anyone to admit it. I'll admit I was wrong, between sanitizing my hands when it was really in the air, to assuming the vaccines would end it. Lots of mistakes on my end!
pwarner··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan’s War on San Francisco Politics Has Only Just Begun
I'm not following the details of this closely, but it sounds like he's a Democrat criticizing Democrats in SF for going to far left. Often these critiques from within the party are the best. There are lots of voices on the Republican side who see that party shifting too far right. I find those voices trying to pull to the center the most useful from both sides.
pwarner··on Snowden leak: Cavium networking hardware may contain NSA backdoor
Maybe there's something sinister here, or maybe Cavium and other similar network chips can be used for sigint, as well as many other things. Basically these are chips designed to look at every packet and can be programmed to take action on them. One could program a chip like this to find all the packages from user X and send an extra copy over to user Y (NSA). It's possible all this tweet means is that these NP chips are powerful and flexible enough to perform sigint. I wonder if this is like saying Intel CPUs can be used to evil things. Or C. Of course it's possible there is a back door, but that seems like the less likely scenario.
pwarner··on Farmers Insurance Laying Off 11% of Workforce, Citing Industry Challenges
For sure insurance companies have a chance to act as a forcing function to drive better building codes, fuel management, etc. Those are hard things, especially for existing homes, but it's a simpler calculation for a homeowner to put $100k into a retrofit of it will save them $10k a year in insurance...
pwarner··on Azure ChatGPT: Private and secure ChatGPT for internal enterprise use
It's almost like employees might have their own computers?
pwarner··on Downfall Attacks
I think most if not all cloud VMs dedicate a core to you. Well, there are some that share like the T series on AWS and I think other clouds have similar, but my bet is they can put in an extra "flush" between users to prevent cross tenant leakage.

Of course cross process leakage for a single tenant is an issue, in cloud or on prem, and folks will have to decide how much they trust the processes on their machine to not become evil...

pwarner··on TSMC warns over deepening slump in chipmaking sector
Very possible that this is a factor, it's very hard to sort out. I see execs and investors are nervous. Is it the bullwhip effect or am I seeing a real increase or decrease? You'll know looking back in a few years!
pwarner··on Microsoft takes pains to obscure role in 0-days that caused email breach
I get the sense the old MS is alive and well.
pwarner··on Anchor Steam brewery shutting down after 127 years
Maybe some tech exec on here will by it as their retirement project? Anyone?
pwarner··on Why there are so many cybersecurity vendors and where do we go from here
I wonder if there is an in here for open source? At least parts of the solution?

The problem seems very much to be a data problem, and a code quality problem. Maybe OSS could help with the latter at least?

pwarner··on Why there are so many cybersecurity vendors and where do we go from here
All these tools seem to have terrible quality as well. I am not even qualified to speak on their security features, but they all seem to feature poor, opaque performance. Maybe it's just a symptom of all enterprise software?
pwarner··on Kepler: The Volume of a Wine Barrel
Alcohol in various forms drove a lot of innovation. I can't argue against the negatives of alcohol, but it's part of our shared journey.

Pasteur comes to mind, but many others.

pwarner··on Sperm counts are declining. Scientists have pinpointed the main causes
I can't prove this, but I think it may be related based on some personal experience. Everything seems better down there is I stand more
pwarner··on Qantas is bringing back Airbus A380s from the California desert
I missed the actual takeoff on my one and only 380 flight. It was truly exceptional. 747 may have more character and history, but 380 may be more comfortable.
pwarner··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
you can and should look at them as aN "as little as you can eat buffet" option. the cost transparency is a huge part of the value of cloud, even if it cost the same as on prem, the transparency is huge, but it's even more valuable if you make smart choices with that transparency.

of course often folks just ignore costs until al of the sudden it's a huge pain point.

pwarner··on Amazon Titan
Yeah this seems like a big win for Azure overall, which is otherwise not compelling vs AWS unless you are all in on MS stack (Windows, SQL Server)
pwarner··on Show HN: Skip the SSO Tax, access your user data with OSS
I always thought this was insane, but now I wonder if "SSO Pricing"/tax is just the "real price" and the "Base pricing" is really the new free trial? Of course the SSO/real pricing is too high, and everyone negotiates it down, but the point is I suspect the "base pricing" is just a trial teaser that's probably not sustainable for many vendors in terms of margins. I'm just guessing here, maybe someone with some inside insight from one of these vendors can advise.
pwarner··on Firefox engineers discover a Windows Defender bug that causes high CPU usage
Every security app seems to have problems like this all the time, and they never seem to be able to detect them themselves. Security software that didn't suck would be a huge opportunity, and yeah as others have alluded too, a huge carbon emission reduction!

I had two different IT mandated apps taking up a total of 3.5 complete CPU cores for a week before I undocked and noticed the fast battery drain. On an M1 no fan blast to alert me. It's a terrible terrible state of affairs.

pwarner··on How to Insure Your Money When You’re Banking over $250K (2022)
You probably need to buy bonds issued by your state, although that may increase risk
pwarner··on A SVB short seller explains red flags he saw months ago
I think Ally is very focused on auto loans, so again industry concentration. They raised the rate they pay on their savings accounts yesterday. Will be interesting
pwarner··on Live on a cruise ship for $30k per year
I wonder how this works with taxes? HR department at work gets freaked out if people work a few weeks from abroad, or even another state.
pwarner··on Tell HN: Salesforce is mandating RTO 3 days/wk for all employee
From my past experience 50% of the time was sort of the magic amount of time to be in the office. Seemed the best blend of focus time at home and in person time in the office. Now I'm 100% remote but next job I'd look for 50 /50 mix.
pwarner··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
No one at Microsoft uses Teams, they just use email.
pwarner··on Easter egg in flight path of last 747 delivery flight
I had the pleasure and privilege to sit under the pilot on a BA 747 from LHR to SFO. Amazing experience. That plane has been melted down and made into beer cans.
