pwarner··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
There is also Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Copilot for Sales and I'm sure several more. Copilot is really great branding, and also really confusing
pwarner··on Oracle dumps Terraform for OpenTofu
Yeah this sounds like a very narrow use case shifting. That of moving your EBS ERP application to Oracle cloud from on premise. I mean, people are doing that migration and it's exciting if they are actually using iac, but this can't represent large usage of Terraform.
pwarner··on Oracle dumps Terraform for OpenTofu
I think Oracle Linux was a similar approach to let their customers use RedHat Linux without paying RedHat, now also IBM.
pwarner··on Road resurfacing during the daytime without stopping traffic [video]
I've watched these. They're excellent.

They make me wonder why these European companies don't compete in US infrastructure projects?

pwarner··on How much is enough to FIRE in San Francisco?
I guessed $6M when I read the headline. I'm in a LCOL area so I see ~$4.5M as my number. Inflation / future returns are the biggest challenge.
pwarner··on MemoryDB: A fast and durable memory-first cloud database
That just says they are using S3 to persist to disk.
pwarner··on Ask HN: Does Anyone Use a "Closed Core" Software Model?
I think Datadog does similar. I always thought it brought benefits to knowing what runs on your machine, and one time we modified it.
pwarner··on FCC Officially Raises Minimum Broadband Metric from 25Mbps to 100Mbps
These are the spec. Implementations vary. They vary in terms of chips, but also the way they get deployed on existing cable plant.
pwarner··on Launch HN: SiLogy (YC W24) – Chip design and verification in the cloud
I worked with some chip design and verification folks. They were very tolerant of slow results, waiting for licenses or infrastructure. Their processes were just built around those constraints. They didn't seem to have interest in removing them.

As an impatient software developer it was very interesting.

pwarner··on AWS acquires Talen's 960MW nuclear data center campus in Pennsylvania
I think this has to be it. Not us East 3, but AI only data center
pwarner··on Apple rejected Bing for wrong answers about Annie Lennox
Did they stop? Teams is still very much a poor copy of Zoom and Slack. Like they can't even make good copies.
pwarner··on The Fed is behind the Capital One/Discover merger
But in the days between a fraudulent charge, and you reporting it, maybe you bounced a check... There is a difference between your account balance being immediately depleted by fraud and your available credit being reduced.
pwarner··on The Fed is behind the Capital One/Discover merger
Do people do enough debit card transactions to make this loophole worthwhile? I avoid using my debit card as much as possible since the impact of theft is much worse for me as a consumer. I experience fraudulent credit card charges every few years, but it's not real money gone from my account. I'd be much more annoyed if it was.
pwarner··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
Yeah the real story seems to be garbage customer service: by the AI and humans at Air Canada. Perhaps the bot is implemented perfectly to match the humans it replaced.
pwarner··on Making steel without emitting CO2
I mean people are intentionally making industrial quantities of chlorine, via electrolysis, and have been for an century.
pwarner··on Nassim Taleb says the U.S. is in a ‘death spiral’ over government debt
There's such big potential to tax boomer wealth as they die that are are allowing to slip away. It has big potential to reduce the debt.
pwarner··on Boeing faces new safety alert over earlier generation of 737s
Often the equivalent Airbus plane is more comfortable as well. Especially A320 vs 737, which has to be the most common for most folks. Of course operators control the leg room for example, but the width of the fuselage is down to the manufacturer.

https://simpleflying.com/boeing-737-vs-airbus-a320/

> One discernable difference when it comes to passenger comfort and experience is the width of the cabin. The Airbus A320 has a wider cabin by seven inches than the Boeing 737. When measured in terms of personal space, an economy seat on a Delta Air Lines Airbus A320 measures 18 inches, whereas a seat on the same carrier's 737s measures 17.3 inches.

pwarner··on Will the new judicial ruling in the Vizio lawsuit strengthen the GPL?
What's the benefit to Vizio in withhold the source? Wouldn't all their interesting custom code be outside the scope of the GPL?
pwarner··on Removing data transfer fees when moving off Google Cloud
Egress fees are way too high. And it doesn't keep anyone in cloud, if you want to move out, you do it. In fact, I think the fear of egress costs keeps more people OUT of cloud than it keeps people in. This is a smart move that won't cost them anything and may increase their business.
pwarner··on Ask HN: Any felons successfully found IT work post-release?
Slack had a great talk about this project at their conference back in 2019 I believe. They really seemed committed to being a change agent in this area which struck me as awesome.
pwarner··on Xerox to cut 15% of its workforce
their history goes deep in LA (to the 1930s), if not Monroe specifically https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumen_Technologies#History but as others mention, L3 and or Qwest execs likely runs the show now.
pwarner··on Two pharmacists figured out that oral phenylephrine doesn't work
I always buy as much Pseudoephedrine as I can since I get regular head colds. It's always funny to ask for "as much as I can get".
pwarner··on Breaking free of plastic pollution
Burning above 1000°C supposedly destroys the dioxins. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/dioxins-and...
pwarner··on Gemini AI
I have considered Oracle and MS to be competing for the title of new IBM. Maybe MS is shaking it off with their AI innovation, but I think a lot of that is just lipstick.
pwarner··on Amazon Unveils Graviton4: A 96-Core ARM CPU with 536.7 GBps Memory Bandwidth
In the past they used to become cheaper at least via spot pricing
pwarner··on London Is Building Its Own Vegas Sphere
But in Vegas at least blasting adverts is sort of the motto of the city. There it fits in I'd argue.
pwarner··on The first two custom silicon chips designed by Microsoft for its cloud
Shouldn't inference be 99.999% of the compute cost over time? Especially for MS. Look how many Copilots they are cramming into their products
pwarner··on The first two custom silicon chips designed by Microsoft for its cloud
Viva
pwarner··on Bing Chat is so hungry for GPUs, Microsoft will rent them from Oracle
Oracle cloud may be better than azure at the lowest levels. My prediction is this is part of why MS will buy Oracle. Just my crazy prediction.
