purringmeow··on Next Silicon Valley? Berlin's battle to be a tech hub
What are your living expenses? Where are you located?

I've scouted for houses in South Spain some time ago and was under the impression you can get a decent house near the beach for around 50k Euro, which isn't a lot.

Also, what about Mallorca? I've heard Martin Varsavsky say there is some sort of a retreat-hackerspace-coworkingspace thing?

purringmeow··on Next Silicon Valley? Berlin's battle to be a tech hub
They are comparable.

Bulgaria/Romania: You can easily get 1500-2500 Euro gross with a few years of XP. Taxes and cost of living are lower too.

Ukraine: An acquaintance of mine, who's sold a few startups, didn't have success there, because experienced people wouldn't work for less than 4k Euro. Developers get paid a lot in the big cities.

Russia: Crazy high wages in Moscow/St.Petersburg, though cost of living is insane too.

Don't know much about other countries, but the situation is definitely comparable.

Actually, wages aren't that low. Taxes are high, specifically the tax brackets mess things a bit! Net salary is a bit over 55% of your gross income when you account for health insurance, pension, taxes AND you don't pay church tax.

Examples:

4000Euro/Month gross, net == ~2395 Euro

5000Euro/Month gross, net == ~2897 Euro

It would be interesting to see how much employees in Berlin cost their employers too.

purringmeow··on Tesla and SpaceX: Elon Musk's industrial empire [video]
I've looked around and it seems there are lithium-sulfur based batteries with 10x capacity and all in all lasting 4x

purringmeow··on Tesla and SpaceX: Elon Musk's industrial empire [video]
Makes me think how much we need a revolution in batteries.

I am wondering if there will be a new type of batteries soon or maybe we'll get improved capacity by slapping a software layer that manages charging/discharging.

purringmeow··on Why I'm Boycotting Mozilla Products
You went really deep down the rabbit hole. There is nothing illegal in demanding someone's resignation because of views, there is nothing illegal in thousands of other stuff I wouldn't do.

What I meant by fair is that according to me it's not OK to punish someone because of his/her views, when the person manages to separate personal and professional life. But if that's your thing, by all means, do it. I hope you won't complain if you are ever on the receiving end though.

What does his stance on gay marriage tell you about his ability to lead? It tells me exactly nothing. Has he harrased or fired an employee for being gay? I really doubt that.
purringmeow··on Why I'm Boycotting Mozilla Products
Has B.Eich done anything do expose his views in the workplace? I don't think so. It's unfair to push your political/societal ideas on others in the company and demand they conform to them. I am saying that as a note to some employees demanding B.Eich to resign, because of the donation he made.

It's getting a bit ridiculous how some people are getting publicly bashed, because of their views. There is clear separation between the person with his views and the company with its vision.

purringmeow··on Don't Distract New Programmers with OOP
It isn't. I took a course in my last year at high school and real world analogies made OOP seem a breeze. Almost no one in the course had problems grasping OOP basics and applying them. Of course, the OOP lectures came after 3 months of intensive studying and basic algo tasks solving.
purringmeow··on Revisiting why incompetents think they’re awesome (2012)
How do you know they think they are awesome? Maybe they are aware of their limitations and try to keep their ego at bay by reminding themselves about Dunning-Kruger's statement?
purringmeow··on Digia releases Qt 5.2 with Android and iOS support
The only difference is support I believe.
purringmeow··on NSA morale down after Edward Snowden revelations, former U.S. officials say
If there are good cops(or in this case NSA personnel), why don't they protect us from the bad ones?

Although Snowden may be included in the former category.

purringmeow··on NSA morale down after Edward Snowden revelations, former U.S. officials say
If you take a peek at history, you will see that we never learn from it and repeat the same mistakes. That's a thing a historian friend of mine says a lot.

What strikes me is this:

when one parent asked, what Snowden's destination was, another said, "Gitmo?" with a smile that indicated that he thought Snowden belongs there.

It's terrifying how people silently consent to putting people in prisons that are above the law and feel smug about it. It shows they truly never bothered taking a lesson from even recent history.

purringmeow··on Nobody builds nuclear reactors for fun anymore
You can't dig below the reactor, because there is a high chance of the whole structure collapsing and getting in contact with water.

However, I share your opinion on dealing with radioactive waste. It's not a technical challenge, but a political one.

purringmeow··on Peter Higgs: I wouldn't be productive enough for today's academic system
Exactly. And I really want to hear his/her opinion, because it interests me. My goal isn't to attack in a passive-aggressive manner.
purringmeow··on Peter Higgs: I wouldn't be productive enough for today's academic system
I am interested in what kind of alternative are you offering? How do you give basic knowledge to the majority of people?
purringmeow··on After working +1200 hours in oDesk
If we multiply his hourly rate by the amount of hours he put, we get around $23,000.
purringmeow··on South Africa's Nelson Mandela dies
"Long live the Cuban Revolution. Long live comrade Fidel Castro... Cuban internationalists have done so much for African independence, freedom, and justice. We admire the sacrifices of the Cuban people in maintaining their independence and sovereignty in the face of a vicious imperialist campaign designed to destroy the advances of the Cuban revolution. We too want to control our destiny... There can be no surrender. It is a case of freedom or death. The Cuban revolution has been a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving people."

Nelson Mandela, 1991

History is truly written by the victorious ones. I find it funny that people praise a communist guerrilla fighter, responsible for so much violence. That's like praising Che Guevara. Oh wait... And don't get me wrong - I hate the apartheid as much.

purringmeow··on Life Advice for Young Men That Went Viral in the 1850's
But that's hard to do, considering our minds are natural born lawyers. There is a fine line between confidence and believing BS, one that I can't always find.
purringmeow··on My Roommate's a Genius
I had pretty serious musical training that lasted for a few years. Anyways, my teachers were crazy imaginative. They would also build stuff from what looked like scraps - insulated and strengthened jacks, book shelves, studio monitor stands, etc, etc.

I wonder what makes them tick like this!

purringmeow··on Computer-driven cars will convulse the automotive industry
Yep, I always thought that driverless trucks will come before that kind of cars. Better safety, lower costs, faster shipping, because there are no driver breaks.
purringmeow··on Consumer drones are coming, and they will change everything
Yeah, I know it's basically like what happened after the industrial revolution. However, I wonder what the consequences would be, considering the constantly rising population.
purringmeow··on Consumer drones are coming, and they will change everything
I've always fancied the idea of drone-waiters. There won't be any need of truck/cab drivers soon too.

A lot of jobs will be lost in the future, because of automation. I don't know if that's good or not, however.

purringmeow··on How Software Companies Die (1995)
If I get an RSI I wouldn't be able to write code :)
purringmeow··on The Jolla phone – first impressions
If anything can't be written in JS now, it will be written in JS in the future. Everything will be in JS some day.
purringmeow··on How Software Companies Die (1995)
And giving up "sleep, love and health"? As if I am going to part with my health for whatever salary...
purringmeow··on Jolla
I think 400 euro is a lot for a device with these specs though. They are letting a huge number of devices "fly under them"(be cheaper) and the average consumer doesn't give a damn if the phone runs Sailfish OS or Android.

Nevertheless, I too wish them luck :)

purringmeow··on Dark Matter Developers != Bad Developers
Don't concern yourself with labels. Apply yourself, learn new stuff and meet new people who work in the industry :) You'll figure out the rest.
purringmeow··on Lessons from 2 months of remote working
>> Working more hours does not directly produce more "product."

Exactly! I've always wondered why people are pushing the American death march way of work - long hours in an office and no work/life balance. I really hope we'll be able to change that and make remote work and other unusual work schedules more common in Europe. There is nothing better than going out for a walk in the middle of the day if you are stuck on a problem or starting your work day at 12. Lack of pressure and stress == higher productivity and better health.

purringmeow··on TV Is Dying, And Here Are The Stats That Prove It
And that's not all! Insane copyright prevents a lot of people from legally watching popular series. I am in Europe and there is no legal way for me to watch say "The Walking Dead" or any other series.

So what do I do when I don't get proper service? Piracy - it gives me on demand HQ content.

I wonder when TV networks will move into the 21st century. The next network delivers cheap, on demand HD content worldwide will make a ton of money :)
