purpleblue··on Nearly half of the tap water in the US is contaminated with ‘forever chemicals,’
They should be shut down immediately then. Why should companies be allowed to created more destruction than the value they bring to the country?

I worked in factories, I worked minimum wage jobs, I paid for my own college through scholarships and part-time jobs. I came from a lower-middle class background, and we never went on trips and we never ate out. KFC was considered a special treat. I manufactured my entire career and where I am in life, the fact that there are some people who weren't able to match me is orthogonal to any of that and I won't feel guilty about it. I don't look down on them one bit, life is tough and unfair, but I also won't feel guilty or self-flagellate myself because I worked hard and took advantage of whatever opportunities I either got or created for myself.

At least in California, if you see a picture of a mountain on the label then it must be from a natural source, it can't be tap water.

The fact that we can't eat fish normally is something that all Americans should be mad as hell about. CEOs of chemical plants and their families should be forced to live within 1 mile of one of their plants. Things would get cleaned up right away.

I have a friend who loved sushi and she ate it at least once a week, if not more. Her daughter was born in the bottom 1% of size, so they took a blood test and her blood was poisoned with mercury from how much fish she consumed. She went through months of chelation therapy to bring it down, but the fact that she had to go through that is a testament to how fucked up our water is and how much we are killing the environment and ourselves.

As someone who was a life-long liberal, but worked their ass off to become a 1%er, I 100% believe that the Democrats are using people like me as scapegoats and it makes me furious. I worked and studied when my classmates or coworkers were partying, made good choices, and now I enjoy a nice life because of it.

But now all of a sudden, because I make over $400,000 I "don't pay my fair share of taxes", according to Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden? They can go fuck themselves. Until the Democrats stop vilifying people like me, I'm going to hold my nose and vote anti-Democrat across the board. Everyone that I talk to feel the exact same as me.

The chemical is atrazine and it tests it did turn frogs from male to female. We can quibble over whether or not dosage matters but I think it should also be uncontroversial that using a chemical that disrupts hormones like that should not be used on food that we consume.

Why should the government pay for it? The companies that produced these PFAS and let it pollute our country should be taxed heavily to pay for it.
purpleblue··on Amazon CEO Asks His Hollywood Studio to Explain Its Big Spending
I'm at the precipice of getting rid of most of my streaming services.

I only keep Amazon video around is because it's free. The only show I watch on that is The Boys. I'm waiting for Netflix to ask me to purchase a second account for my sibling who I share my Netflix account with, and when that happens I'll immediately cancel it. There's nothing there I watch anymore. Disney+ has a slew of failed Marvel shows and I cancelled it early on. Hulu, Peacock and the rest of the services have nothing for me.

The only quality content is HBO that I'm willing to pay $15/month for. I also pay for Youtube premium because no matter how much I try to force the issue, my kids watch Youtube the way I watch TV, so I'd rather get rid of all the ads. Everything else, I will pirate without guilt.

purpleblue··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
No they can't. That's why Republicans are a big proponent of school vouchers so that parents can choose which school a child can go to, but Democrats say that is racist.
purpleblue··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Asians are the poorest demographic in NYC, and yet score the highest in testing. So, activists will probably eschew this method as well because it will give Asians preferential treatment which they are loathe to do.
purpleblue··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
I'm happy this happened because Asians are the only ethnicity that suffers true systemic racism when it comes to education.

However, my fear is that the universities are working hard to figure out ways to continue this practice against Asian Americans by skirting around the rules.

purpleblue··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Except it's not mostly poor, hardworking ADOS (African descendents of slavery) students that benefit. It's rich, Black students that are benefiting, especially those from outside the US and no lineage from slavery. The problem with affirmative action is that everyone is only looking literally at skin color, which is the opposite of what we should be doing.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Am I hurting my programming career by not exploring AI coding tools?
No.
purpleblue··on When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?
It depends on how compelling the evidence is, and how verifiable it is. I don't think the speed to which you change your mind matters, it's just that you are open-minded enough to change your mind. If you hold a strong belief and someone gives compelling evidence that makes you pause on your strong belief, then that in and of itself is enough.

You don't have to go hook line and sinker at the very first piece of evidence, because it's the preponderance of evidence that changes minds. The very first experiment that showed the duality of light didn't immediately change people's minds, but it broke the seal, and the accumulation of evidence did afterwards.

purpleblue··on How to do the thing you've been avoiding
If this were Reddit, I would expect dozens of Shia LeBoeuf "Just Do It!" memes right now.
purpleblue··on iOS 17 automatically removes tracking parameters from links you click on
I wonder what companies will do now, probably embed the tracking information within the URL without using parameters, like dynamic URLs that are unique to a particular user/cookie?
purpleblue··on Federal judge: Border searches of cell phones require a warrant
One of my friends had her phone searched while crossing the border, and they used jokes she sent as text messages to give her a 10 year ban. So I know very well the dangers of crossing the border with data on your phone.
purpleblue··on 90% of laid-off H1-B visa holders were able to find new work
I'm a citizen but if I lost my job, I too would take almost any offer. Having a job is infinitely better than no job and holding out for a much higher offer.
purpleblue··on 90% of laid-off H1-B visa holders were able to find new work
If 90% were able to find new work, then it's not really "against all odds" is it?
purpleblue··on Long-term Covid-19 booster effectiveness: a population-based cohort study
What does 26.2% effective mean in this context?
purpleblue··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
I'll take this one step further.

I am currently writing code that I think is, from a design-perspective, completely wrong. But I've learned to completely disassociate myself with what I code. I'll do the best that I can to accomplish because THAT'S MY JOB. That's how I frame everything. I will protest, I will point out flaws, but once the dust has settled, if my boss says she wants it a certain way, I'll do it. I'm happy to just be coding and if they don't want to listen to my advice then I'll just do what I'm told, go home and enjoy the money that I make by doing the things I want.

purpleblue··on Alien was released 44 years ago today
They re-cut Alien in the early 2000s to increase the pace of the movie, and it's so so much better. I watched the 1970s version and I had to admit it was very plodding, which was the case for movies back then. But the re-cut makes it extremely good in my opinion! I suggest rewatching it to everyone!
purpleblue··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
If you look at historical rates, the dischargeability of student loans via bankruptcy had NO effect on student loan interest rates.

purpleblue··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
No, why?
purpleblue··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
Yes, sounds like we are in agreement.
purpleblue··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
"Whataboutism" is not a proper argument.
purpleblue··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
Loan forgiveness is a temporary solution to appease voters with debt. It doesn't solve the root cause because in 10 years, the number of people with crushing student debt will be back to up to the same levels.

You solve the problem by re-allowing student debt to be dischargeable through bankruptcy again. This is the root cause of the problem. The fact Clinton and Bush allowed this to happen is disgusting. All it did was allow banks to give loans to EVERYONE without any fears. Then schools could raise rates knowing kids would still pay the predatory prices, and that's how we get into the mess we are in now.

By allowing student debt to be dischargeable, banks are now taking a risk of losing their money, which means that they won't give loans to people who frankly are wasting their money. A parent at my workplace was asking how she could afford to pay her daughter's $80k/yr tuition for a sociology degree. The fact that this completely stupid idea was even being considered shows the depths to which society is fucked up.

purpleblue··on You studied computer science but Big Tech no longer wants you
Recessions happen. It's a part of life. People need to understand that they aren't owed a job.
purpleblue··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
Kafka PMC is utterly dominated by Confluent or former employees. Everything Kafka does has been and always will be with Confluent's best interest first and foremost. The idea that Kafka isn't completely controlled by Confluent would be disingenuous at best. I don't have anything against Kafka or Confluent, but people should call a spade a spade here when it's blatantly obvious.
purpleblue··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
Meh. It's obvious Confluent exploited the status of being an Apache open source project in order to say they were open-source. But look at the make up of the PMC of Kafka and it's completely dominated by Confluent employees or former employees. Nothing gets done without Confluent's approval or best interest at heart.
