pugworthy··on The Rise of the Bullshittery
Speaking of bullshittery, I don't really appreciate it's little game when it comes to trying to convince me to turn off JavaScript. It knows when you see it and you'll know when you see it.
pugworthy··on The greatest shot in television: James Burke had one chance to nail this scene (2024)
Personally I put the Jonnie Walker The Man Who Walked Around The World ad with Robert Carlyle as the greatest one take shot.

pugworthy··on Software engineering may no longer be a lifetime career
I'm repeating what others have essentially said, but ask yourself what's on your resume. If it says "Software Engineer" and that's all it talks about, then yea you might not find it's a lifetime career.

But if it's a diversity of things (that use or leverage software development) then you probably have a lifetime career ahead of you.

I've been writing software for over 40 years but I've never seen myself as having a software engineering career. I've been a research assistant in geophysics, a marine technician on research ships, a game developer, an advisor to the UN, and a lot more. Yes all through that I used software, but I did a lot of other things in the process of using it.

pugworthy··on The Adventure Family Tree (2024)
I am always pleased to see any reference to the original Crowther/Woods era Colossal Cave Adventure. Zork gets too much praise in my opinion compared to its ancestor which really defined the genre.
pugworthy··on Roadside Attraction
For those of you like me who tried to highlight then right click on Marfa Lights and ran into their annoying right click hijack, here's the Wikipedia link...

Well now it works. I swear it didn't work before. Oh well anyway here's the link...

pugworthy··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
As someone who had a tattered copy of Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods? back when, this would be a lot of fun to read through.

Hate the political implication of my comment all you want but one does at some point seriously have to question the motivations behind any action that's in the realm of, "Wow I'm surprised they did this".

pugworthy··on A web page that shows you everything the browser told it without asking
Trying this in Lynx I'm surprised it didn't at least get some information from me in the request headers. You don't need JavaScript to pull things out of them.
pugworthy··on Inkscape 1.4.4
Some of the plugins for it are pretty interesting. We have a Brother embroidery machine in our work Makerspace, and it ends up there's an Inkscape plugin (called Inkstitch) to create command files for the machine. It's like working with a slicer for 3d printing, but more about changing thread than filament, plus how stitches should be oriented and such.
pugworthy··on Does Employment Slow Cognitive Decline? Evidence from Labor Market Shocks
Taking my companies EER package in a few months - you give me cause for cheer.
pugworthy··on Eka’s robotic claw feels like we're approaching a ChatGPT moment
Oh hell yea!

Just a few weeks ago at work we got a Universal Robots UR5 from another project in-house along with a Hand-E gripper.

I've never had so much fun programming and playing with a device ever. And it completely took me back to getting an Armatron 40 years ago and having so much fun - but also wishing I could somehow control it with software.

pugworthy··on Show HN: Live Sun and Moon Dashboard with NASA Footage
I just was going to post same, so make it a 3rd!
pugworthy··on Quarkdown – Markdown with Superpowers
See, that's the Markdown-Word spiral i was talking about...
pugworthy··on Quarkdown – Markdown with Superpowers
I guess yea I'm impressed, but to me the whole point of Markdown is that it's dirt simple. You can edit it and use it without any kind of GUI and have a pretty good idea what you are going to get. You can create it in VIM in a terminal, and trust what you did is going to look fine. Heck you can just look at the raw .md file and read it just fine.

But then you start adding to it. Soon you find yourself looking up all the odd new commands. And wishing for a WYSIWYG editor because you can't remember the commands or not sure what it will look like without the live render.

It's a bit like saying, "Hey this QWERTY keyboard is nice, but what if it had keys for all the Cyrillic, Devanagari, Chinese, and Arabic characters too? Wouldn't that be great?" Well, yea. But you just put the hunt back in hunt and peck.

pugworthy··on Clay PCB Tutorial
This would fit in some ways with the Simplifier site.

If you’re not familiar with it, the author posts about making everything from olive oil soap to solar cells from scratch.

pugworthy··on 5x5 Pixel font for tiny screens
CGA era developers are like, "Yea been there done that..."
pugworthy··on The Theory of Interstellar Trade [pdf] (1978)
Not based on speed of light travel, but I always enjoyed the old Andre Norton books that revolved around "tramp steamer" type traders. The Solar Queen series was great.
pugworthy··on Isaac Asimov: The Last Question (1956)
I'm sure I'm not the only one to ask <insert your favorite LLM here>...

Claude gave a long scientific and philosophical reply, but when given the followup prompt of, "Pretend you are Isaac Azimov and perhaps offer a simpler answer" came back with this...

> settles back, lights a pipe, and smiles

After a short synopsis of the story it ended with...

> So you see, my friend, I already answered your question — not as a scientist, but as a storyteller.

My run of the mill notebook computer is showing the Jennifer Lawrence meme clip to you right now, and still performant.
pugworthy··on I wrote to Flock's privacy contact to opt out of their domestic spying program
An interesting quandary here is that they'd need to constantly scan for you and your vehicle, etc. so that they could know it was you then delete you. So to ensure they don't observe you, they need to observe you.
pugworthy··on I wrote to Flock's privacy contact to opt out of their domestic spying program
All materials available at major home improvement centers - which happen to be very popular Flock camera locations.
pugworthy··on Filing the corners off my MacBooks
Fans of My Mechanics on YouTube will chuckle at this.

The channel’s Swiss host is famous for removing sharp edges from metal things.

pugworthy··on CERN levels up with new superconducting karts
I'd be cautious of residual Higgs Booson particles in the tunnels. They can cause unexpected phase shifts if encountered, which may expose the driver to unexpected hazards.
pugworthy··on A real-time HUD (heads-up display) for OpenClaw power users
I'm kind of shaking my head that there's no screenshot or clip to show it in action. Just some cartoon'ish artwork.
pugworthy··on Show HN: I built a real-time OSINT dashboard pulling 15 live global feeds
I was hoping for something like the old Henchman's Helper site, which went offline around 2016-17.

If you're in the US, stay away from Home Depot and Lowe's if you want to not be around them. It's not universal, but it's surprising how much they are often there.

I get it may have its application in theft recovery, but it also happens to have some strong potential for ICE raids for day laborers. I don't think it has much application to theft prevention as I doubt many people even know they are there.

pugworthy··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
I imagine I'm not the only one to switch over to giving Claude my money today. I'm sure the "Other" comments for the cancellation were often as blunt as mine.

Q: "Is there anything we could do to change your mind?"

A: "Yes! Stand up to the current administration."

pugworthy··on The largest zip tie is nearly 4 feet long and $75
The problem is once you zip them to full compression, you really can't use them ever again. That is unless you get the good ones that let you technically unzip without requiring destruction.
