publicdebates··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
So your proposal is to start an ad hoc friend group with people who come up to me, and try to become friends with them personally?

I'm not sure I'm the right person for that. I live in a suburb, not the city that I do the surveys in. And I'm extraordinarily boring, and too old.

It seems that I should try to think bigger. Try to find a way to help these people connect with each other. Something in person, not an app like Hinge. Maybe, hold a sign that says ad hoc meet and greet at such and such time and place, after collecting a list of common interests and putting those interests on the same sign that says the time and date. That could work.

publicdebates··on GitHub Is Down
We don't know that it's Copilot's fault yet. Just because Microsoft is pushing more and more of its devs to use GitHub Copilot, and is bragging about how much internal code is being written by GHCP, and has had several serious crashes coinciding with this timing, this is no evidence that GH-crashes are CP-related. Let's just wait and see that Microsoft tells us it had nothing to do with GHCP. Then we will know that GH crashes had nothing to do with CP.

I posted a comment that gives a few of my thoughts as to why. How do you propose those problems be solved?
publicdebates··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I'm also in this group, so I have a few theories as to what causes it and how to fix it.

For one thing, I was severely traumatized as a kid, which delayed a lot of my social skills. I'm catching up but not all the way there yet. When my social battery is full, I can do pretty well, but if I'm even a little down, it's basically impossible to act normally.

I also had it hammered into me as a kid that nobody wants me around, nobody could ever love me, I'm a failure, a burden, a creep, a weirdo, and nothing but a bothersome nuisance that nobody would ever want to spend 30 seconds alone with. I'm trying to reject these thoughts, but it's difficult when you have nobody to talk to. It's like pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. I wonder how many people have the same issue. I've made a few friends in person, but I rarely get to see them.

Well I've started doing public surveys in my nearby big city, and documenting the results. I just hold out a posterboard that says "how alone do you feel"[1] or "have you ever been in love" etc, and hold out a marker, and people come up and take the survey. At first I did this out of sheer loneliness and boredom. But I have done it for enough months that some people have come up to me and told me that I've helped them, or that they look forward to my signs.

I'm trying to reach those people who feel the way I feel have no way of connecting with anyone, or at least feel that they don't. Do you have any new ideas of how to achieve this?

And it happened after I wrote that comment.

Which means I replied to a bot.

I am officially retiring from social media.

Word for word, 53 minutes later? Why?

I have exactly 1 guess but am waiting to say it.

publicdebates··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
That someone created a new country recently called Verdis, with a population of about 400.

I was planning a hostile takeover, figuring how hard could it be with these guys, until I found out Croatia already did that.

publicdebates··on Show HN: Xoscript
Wow, you weren't kidding

> In Xoscript, the meaning of True and False is not fixed. In fact, a Xoscript program gets pretty shaken up over a statement like this: [True := False.] The result of such actions is undefined, however it remains a valid action and therefore formally allowed. Furthermore, there is a Boolean object, which is the root object of both True and False, as both are derivatives of the root object. The Boolean object itself, however, does not provide any practical application.

publicdebates··on Show HN: HyTags – HTML as a Programming Language
Not sure how homoiconicity is related to this at all. Macros don't seem involved.

But I do think s-expressions are an improvement over HTML in certain scenarios.

That said (talking to OP now), why is the control handler outside the button?

In actual HTML, we have [button onclick="codeToBeEvaled()"]

In this thing, you have [button][onclick [sub-expressions]]

With s-expressions, at least you have some semblance of function calls, which would make control flow operators seem slightly more natural, but this hybrid of semantic and syntactic choice just seems bizarrely limited.

This strengthens my belief that all governments, mafias, urban gangs, and even cliques, are literally all just ancient tribalism manifested in modernity; may the biggest rocks win.

This is a genuine work of art. I don't care how impractical it is, it's utterly beautiful, and a joy to play with.

I forgot where I was writing that. Of course everyone on HN uses RSS.

How is that a good thing?

How is that a good thing?

Guessed 2 of the first 3 questions.

Got to question 4 and gave up:

    new Date("not a date")
    1) Invalid Date
    2) undefined
    3) Throws an error
    4) null
There's literally no way of guessing this crap. It's all random.

Is there really a distinction? Isn't the altruistic concept that we all have innate value also a statement of offering value, even by our mere existence?

I find it so odd that people overlook severe faults in those whose other qualities they rather love and greatly appreciate. It seems so unjust, yet it's universal.

Was it confirmed that eric hard jams was actually him?

How strange it is that we so easily forgive bad behavior from people we love.

Tangential:

"Aisatsana - Aphex Twin - Barbican, London 10th October 2012. It's a bit dark so it's probably difficult to tell but that's a grand piano being swung back and forth across the stage like a pendulum."

"Yeah, it's written for my wife. When I first did that, I did this installation-y art thing at the Barbican with a remote orchestra. [The song] was made on my Disklavier [controlled piano], which was swung from the roof at that gig, and there was this massive Doppler effect. It is pretty mental. There's a bad cameraphone version of it on YouTube, but in the flesh it's fucking amazing. To listen to this piano swinging, you almost see all the notes stretching out, so it'll hit you at different times. I never knew if it was going to work or not, and everyone was like, “What the fuck is he swinging a piano for?” But when we actually got it going, we were just like, “fucking hell.” It was so extreme. My friends were like, “Are the strings stretching?” The pitch deviation is that big, it sounds like the actual frame is contorting. Maybe it is, I don't know!" - Richard D. James

You can almost consider the Bible like a puzzle or riddle, that you have to solve using the entirety of it, as well as historical context, extrabiblical writings, personal life experience, and a humble and pure intent.

When "asdfasdf" is actually a package name, and it's in reply to a request for an NPM package, and the question is formulated in a way that makes it hard for LLMs to make that connection, you will get a false positive.

I imagine this will happen more than not.

Even if so, that only answers the "morals" part of what I listed.

Where for example do they derive absolutely objective goals from?

publicdebates··on Show HN: A Daily Bible Game
Absolutely objective values, rights, morals, principles, goals, means, and sustenance.

publicdebates··on An Honest Review of Go (2025)
I admit that it's nice to have a very simple, straightforward, and minimal build process. No dealing with VMs, no setting up environments, just install Go and then compile your program. Reminds me of C back in the late 90s.
publicdebates··on Show HN: A Daily Bible Game
It's related to John 2:23-25. He's not saying you should not have friends or trust anyone. He's saying you should not seek or hope anything from humans that only God can actually provide. It's related to codependence and similar character flaws. I think even atheists would agree that it's not healthy to want the objective approval and validation of inconstant people with imperfect judgment.

I absolutely would pass this kind of quiz 100% with any New Testament quote, thanks to having put Life and Truth Dramatized Audio New Testament on in the background literally 24/7 for a few years straight. Also John Rhys-Davies reads Hebrews so well with his classical training and Welsh accent that it's hard not to memorize large parts of it verbatim.
publicdebates··on Show HN: A Daily Bible Game
This is too difficult:

    Do not trust in a friend;
      Do not put your confidence in a companion;
    Guard the doors of your mouth
      From her who lies in your bosom.
    For son dishonors father,
      Daughter rises against her mother,
    Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
      A man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
    Therefore I will look to the Lord;
      I will wait for the God of my salvation;
        My God will hear me.
Tried [redacted] and [redacted] first, turns out to be [redacted]. I would literally never have guessed that. It genuinely could have been from any [redacted] book at that point. Maybe if I could just give up with a button.

Also yeah it's weird that I have to wait a day to do the next one. I get the appeal of having a daily routine fun site, but why not also let me do a random one each time I pass/fail if I want?
