pta2002··on Show HN: I wrote my own RTS game engine in C
This definitely varies by university. I had haskell and C on my first year, only had Java on the second.
pta2002··on Using GDPR to obtain one’s data as JSON
Meh, I want notifications on for whatsapp but I definitely don't want them on news sites. This is the wrong way to go about this IMO. Just a default, should definitely be overridable.
pta2002··on WhatsApp will progressively kill features until users accept new privacy policy
That's the name you set for yourself
pta2002··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
You can use that feature to do some incredibly specific targeting to mess with people - as in, make some incredibly targeted ads that will only show up for a single person.
pta2002··on YouTube is now building its own video-transcoding chips
Can't trust user input, you'd have to spend quite a bit of energy just checking to see if it's good. You also want to transcode multiple resolutions, it'd end up being quite slow if it's done using JS.
pta2002··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
But what requests would it even make? If you opt out you're effectively telling it to _not_ make any requests.
pta2002··on The “Granny Knot”
I need this, I absolutely suck at folding t-shirts.
pta2002··on Linus Torvalds on Rust support in kernel
This is for writing kernel modules, which ideally need to be integrated in the kernel build system.
pta2002··on Higher quality audio makes people sound smarter
For that you can probably just use Garage Band, which is effectively just Logic with less features, and free.
pta2002··on Coinbase’s listing may break records
I'd say 20000% fluctuations are hardly stable, no?
pta2002··on Surround Sound in Headphones
The AirPods Pro can do that
pta2002··on M1 dev setup with a virtual Linux box
Do you know what that firefox variable is? It's the only reason I'm not using firefox right now.
pta2002··on ESP32-C6, a Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 (LE) SoC
AFAIK the older ESP chips used Xtensa, not ARM.
pta2002··on Prince Philip has died
What does this mean?
pta2002··on Microsoft Edge market share grew 13x in the past 12 months, overtaking Firefox
How does Chrome own the OS? ChromeOS is hardly what's making Chrome the dominant browser.
pta2002··on Ask HN: How to sell apps on Linux?
> I was mostly giving DAW as an example though, same would go to any kind of specialized software.

Yep, I'd absolutely love a real Photoshop competitor made in a similar spirit to reaper. Photoshop just has too many niceties that something like gimp doesn't even come close to (one that comes to mind is Select Subject - has probably saved me hours of work and does a much better job than I ever could manually)

> > If you own multiple computers, you may install the same license key on all of them, as long as you only use REAPER on one computer at a time.

> I love this, let's not pretend people have a single computer.

This is what I meant by no bullshit licensing, it's really refreshing to see a professional and competitive product be this way when it comes to user freedom. I'd like it to be open source, but this is probably the next best thing.

Just a shame that most audio plugins don't follow the same philosophy, otherwise I'd happily be using just Linux for music production (though you can at least make most windows-only plugins work on linux through wine)

pta2002··on Ask HN: How to sell apps on Linux?
Reaper is absolutely amazing, works on Linux just fine (natively! And supports LV2 plugins) and it's only $60 (and the demo version is a WinRar-like "I'm still using it" button). It's also a completely no-bullshit approach to software development, no subscriptions, nothing like that. Buy the license once, and upgrade to a commercial license (which is still less than the price of something like Ableton or Logic) if you are using it to make more than something like $20k. It's proprietary, but it's completely customizable, even coming with its own scripting engine. I think you should give it a shot, GPL is the only thing missing from your list of requirements, but it's also made by a small independent team that doesn't do the usual crap associated with bigger apps.

A good alternative to JACK and PulseAudio is PipeWire, which for me has worked basically completely flawlessly and supports JACK and PulseAudio bridges natively.

pta2002··on Emoji Under the Hood
Google's Noto Fonts[1] attempt to cover all of Unicode and are released under the SIL Open Font License.

pta2002··on PinePhone – Beta Edition Linux SmartPhone Preorder
This isn't about needing it though, as far as I can tell it's legally required, so I don't know how (if at all) they're getting around that.
pta2002··on Stompenberg FX: Demo and play over 150 pedals live via the internet
This is an absolutely amazing tool and is one of the main reasons I keep buying stuff from Thomann - I'm looking at a pedal, see the little Stompenberg FX demo popup and I can try it out right from my home! It's great and has definitely directly influenced some of my purchases. Hope they never get rid of it!
pta2002··on SQLAlchemy 1.4
Thought they were asking about how it's being kept compatible with both _right now_.
pta2002··on SQLAlchemy 1.4
I'm assuming they just write code in a compatible way. It's not _too_ dificult, but it does add a lot of version checks everywhere. For example, you can use a lot of Python 3 features in Python 2 via the future package.
pta2002··on A hacker got all my texts for $16
I have a security key active but it still offers to send me an SMS code for some reason (worryingly, to a phone number I no longer have... should probably get on to changing that)
pta2002··on March Update: Status Report
I have the soldering iron that is based off, the TS100, and it's really useful. The CPU lets you regulate temperature, and it has features like lowering the temperature when you don't move it for a bit. That's what the CPU is there for, it's really just a microcontroller. Good luck making a (minimally decent) soldering iron without one for temperature control.
pta2002··on Understanding Coinbase
You don't have the private keys. If coinbase loses them, you're out of money. Possibly. They're insured supposedly, but if you have your own private keys then the only entity you have to deal with in this case is yourself (this can be both a positive and a negative, depending on how careful you are)
pta2002··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
I see what you mean, still a lot more complicated than just dragging a "wire" in qjackctl though.
pta2002··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
It does, exactly the same way as JACK, and you can even do it with pulseaudio apps! I could pipe audio from a firefox tab through guitarix (guitar amp emulator) into a second firefox tab if I wanted to. With just JACK or just Pulse this wouldn't be possible. And if I understand it correctly, it should work for video streams too. I'm imagining piping a screenshare through OBS before going into discord or something, should be very useful.
pta2002··on PipeWire: The Linux audio/video bus
Just tried it on NixOS, had no idea it was so fleshed out already! Thought it'd be full of bugs but was pleasantly surprised, it just worked. No issues with compatibility, extremely low latency and has JACK and PulseAudio shims, so everything works out of the box, including pro audio stuff like Reaper and Ardour. And thanks to the JACK shim I can patch around the outputs with qjackctl. This is compared to JACK, which I never managed to properly combine with PulseAudio.
pta2002··on Wi-LE: Can WiFi replace Bluetooth? (2019) [pdf]
Actually I think they switched to just bluetooth now, or at least the new ones can connect to my computer/phone just through bluetooth without an adapter (the old ones did require one though)
pta2002··on A solo journey to $100k in sales
I checked out the theme itself, and immediately a message showed up saying that it detected my country and offered me a discount code to make sure that the theme is still affordable for my country.

It's simple things like this that probably help a side project like this get to where it is, great job!
