psv1··on Ask HN: What will be the stock of the 2020s?
Very unlikely.

1. The probability of some paradigm changing breakthrough in AI over the next 10 years - the kind that can potentially give you the massive market returns - is extremely low.

2. The breakthroughs that will happen will most likely come from the big companies with massive budgets and talented research teams.

AI startup are fighting a losing battle.

psv1··on Ask HN: What will be the stock of the 2020s?
> What will the best performing S&P500 stock of the 2020s?

If you had asked the same question 10 years ago, no one would have guessed Netflix... because it wasn't in the S&P500 at the time.

psv1··on Ask HN: I am not a programmer but a coder, what should I do?
> Start ups do work on cutting edge tech, you just need to be at the right one.

Sure, let me put it in a different way - working on cutting edge tech isn't dependent on the maturity of your company.

psv1··on Ask HN: I am not a programmer but a coder, what should I do?
> I envy those working in startups on cutting edge tech. Those at FAANG making real impact on the world.

Startups don't work on cutting edge tech. FAANG employees aren't making any more of an impact than you're making wherever you're working.

psv1··on Ask HN: Should I use version control or blockchain?
For version control? Use version control.
psv1··on Ask HN: What do you think of using Vi rather than Vim or Neovim?
> feels a lot more bulky, especially Vim.

> I think I can live without syntax highlighting

This is the fussiest of fussy problems. I can't imagine how vim can feel bulky, and how bad it needs to be for you to be willing to trade away all other features. But it's your setup, do whatever you like. I wouldn't make a HN post anytime I think about switching my code editor or IDE.

psv1··on Ask HN: What is your financial “setup”?
Important features of any good setup:

- you consolidate your finances in the minimum number of accounts & cards

- you have a couple of months of expenses as cash in a current or savings account

- you pay off your credit card in full every month

- you invest some amount every month

- all of this is automated - paying bills, credit card repayments, investing, putting money in savings, all of it.

Once you have these things down, you can then adjust percentages, providers and all other details according to your personal situation and preferences.

psv1··on Free and Open-Source Mathematics Textbooks
> it is still often true that you get what you pay for

Hasn't been my experience at all - in fact I haven't noticed a relationship between quality and price of textbooks in either direction.

> you spend so much time and effort seriously working through a math book that whatever money you paid for it looks like something that does not matter at all.

You'll spend the time if the book is good. That's an advantage of free books - you can discard the bad ones without wasting money.

psv1··on Ask HN: What would've been Python if Python didn't exist?
R - it's already good just not quite as good as Python.
psv1··on Ask HN: “Give the hardest job to the laziest person“
"Related" = Where they copied from.
psv1··on Ask HN: Ways to use machine learning in banking risk?
> Predicting problematic positions

This is a problem for finance, not banking.

psv1··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Trello?
Why are you looking for an alternative if Trello fits your use case perfectly?
psv1··on Ask HN: Ways to use machine learning in banking risk?
Are you talking about risk of fraud, risk of credit default or anything else? Either way there are already quite a few companies doing this at very large scale, which shouldn't discourage you - just means that you can find some good resources if you dig deep enough.
psv1··on Ask HN: How dependent are you on Google products?
I use Google's products because they're good (Search, Youtube, Maps, Docs, Chrome up until last week's update). If my account disappeared tomorrow, I would lose a few non-essential files on my google drive and that's about it. Not using Android makes things easier because it means that my contacts and payment methods aren't associated with my google account.

The whole movement of trying to completely de-google yourself and being in fear of account suspension seems absolutely paranoid. Use the services that you like, mix up your email/storage/etc. providers if you prefer - no need to completely silo yourself off one company.

psv1··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
> "Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder", because it's dauntingly long and I'm feeling masochistic.

The length on its own isn't that big of a problem. But if you want a simple idea which can be explained thoroughly in a couple of pages to be stretched out for hundreds pages in the most unbearably condescending and arrogant tone that you can imagine... then Antifragile will fit in great with your masochistic inclinations.

psv1··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2020 and the New Decade?
While you're thinking about your predictions, I recommend to have a glance at the 2010 thread - it's a great mix of predictions that are:

- hilariously wrong

- things people will still predict today for the next decade

- occasionally spot on

psv1··on Ask HN: Would you mind being monitored at work?
Yes, I would mind. A lot. You aren't hypersensitive. Run and don't even think about it twice.
psv1··on Rsuite – R development and data science platform
> To give an example, Rstudio does only one thing at the time, you are running a code, you cannot open a data frame even to look at it.

This isn't specific to R or RStudio. Start running a slow process in your Python IDE of choice, and while it's running try to execute df.head() to view some data frame - you won't be able to see it regardless of the language or IDE (and for a good reason).

psv1··on Rsuite – R development and data science platform
There are many great things about R that you can point out - Shiny is not one of them.
psv1··on Rsuite – R development and data science platform
My job is pretty much only writing R code and managing R models running in production. I still don't understand what your product offers that I don't already have, or how it achieves what it claims to achieve. Copying and pasting the sales pitch from your website didn't clear things up for me.
psv1··on Rsuite – R development and data science platform
After a couple of minutes on their website I still can't figure out what advantage this offers over using RStudio as an IDE and/or running scripts with the default CRAN R installation.
psv1··on Ask HN: Would you trust an ancestry DNA test?
I trust them in the sense that I've used 23andme and then shared that dataset across a few other similar services. The actual utility was questionable - it fell in the category of expensive info-tainment for me, but I might just be biased because there was nothing all that remarkable in my results.
psv1··on Things to Read to Become a Better Human and Developer
Can I anti-recommend Taleb? Maybe it's his delivery that puts me off but I just find him absolutely insufferable.
psv1··on California, and the US, shouldn’t be afraid of density and upzoning
I'm moving to London next month and I'm already feeling a weird mix of excitement and absolute dread.
psv1··on The Ketamine Chronicles, April 2019
Have you tried or considered hallucinogens? I'm not suggesting that you do, just interested in your perspective considering how severe and long-lasting your depression seems to be.
psv1··on Ask HN: What mistakes did you make when starting as a consultant/freelancer?
Nice. These are also great tips for people in permanent roles.
psv1··on Ask HN: Dear Germans, where you emigrated to?
Being in the UK, I'm surprised to see it on the good side of a SWE compensation comparison.
psv1··on Taking ML to production with Rust
Just because it might be possible doesn't mean that it's worthwhile at all.
psv1··on Taking ML to production with Rust
> Rust doesn't have to replace anything. It can be used to create complementary packages especially ones that use C/C++.

I'm not sure that I understand correctly - are you suggesting that people use Rust as an additional layer between Python and C++?

psv1··on Taking ML to production with Rust
Rust can never replace Python as a front-end because it's compiled and not all that flexible or user-friendly.

Rust can't currently replace C or C++ at the back-end because it doesn't have good enough support for GPU computing yet.
