Portland State Intramural hockey: Go Groundhogs!

psim1··on Using the Internet without IPv4 connectivity
There's an IPv6 article that's been on the front page for the better part of a day and to my incredulity, the "IPv6 sucks; why don't we just add more segments to the IPv4 address" guys haven't shown up yet. Where the hell are you, dudes? Do you take the weekend off?
psim1··on After months of coding with LLMs, I'm going back to using my brain
"Using [your] brain" is key. And your brain has to understand software engineering in the first place, before you can use it. In my project, the product manager has recently tried his hand at vibe coding. LLM produces what you would expect it to produce and as described in the article: ok but not robust code, and fast. So now he thinks he knows how fast coding should be and has gone light speed on the product, expecting engineers to produce high quality software at the speed of LLM-produced "ok code". And it's hard to keep expectations reasonable when the world is all a-hype about LLM coding.

psim1··on No Calls
I hate "let's just have a quick call" people. It's never quick, it's always manipulative, and always a waste of time.

I have a client who tries to use calls to weasel out of paying for things. Finally I refused to talk to him on the phone any more. Some invoices remain outstanding but I'm not willing to waste more time listening to BS. I can spend my time making money from responsible people and meanwhile continue to have my invoice system pester him.

Re: sales, there is no such thing as a quick sales call.

psim1··on OpenNMS: Visualize and monitor everything on your local and distributed networks
Zabbix is a good all-rounder.
psim1··on Ask HN: Are hackathons anything more than a lame distraction?
Same here, but learned my lesson in the past and won't participate anyway.
psim1··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2024)
Hi, would like to know more but your job postings page is returning a 403 Forbidden.
psim1··on The magic of small engineering teams
Counterpoint: Being on a small team in a large organization sucks.

In a large org, small teams have no weight. Actually, we have wait - we have to wait for everything: devops resources, marketing resources, even infosec resources. We are too small to notice, not important enough to get quick attention (never mind that our small team's product is profitable).

psim1··on DB-19: Resurrecting an Obsolete Connector (2016)
Apple themselves call the floppy connector a DB-19 (https://support.apple.com/en-me/112201). In this case, it would be better to use the "wrong" DB-19 term so that people seeking the referenced connector can find it.
psim1··on Show HN: Piping logs, visualizing in a web app – just suffix "| npx logscreen"
This is a solution looking for a problem. The browser is a horrible place for viewing text logs. Companies like Splunk and Datadog put countless hours into trying to make it work and it's never not-painful to view logs in a browser.

psim1··on Nrsc5: Receive NRSC-5 digital radio stations using an RTL-SDR dongle
> if the digital streams are viable will switch to reproducing them for the listener.

This produces a weird effect when listening in the car and moving in-and-out of good digital SNR range. When the radio switches between analog and digital, unless the station has them perfectly synced (never), there's always a little echo or stutter. It seems like it would be nothing but it's quite annoying.

psim1··on WWDC 2023 Livestream
"Multiple timers. We truly live in an age of wonders!"

Feels like I am in bizarro world. What is so wonderful about this?

psim1··on Building a Personal VoIP System
I am one of the few people from my generation to maintain a "land line" (VoIP) and I, too, run it with Asterisk and the FreePBX configuration GUI. FreePBX provides a ton of macros out-of-the-box so that adding unwanted callers to a blacklist or doing phone number lookups is simple, for example. Why bother? Well, I find it interesting and fun, but most of the stuff I like can also be done with Google Voice. So I don't recommend self-hosting a phone system unless you are really into the idea and want to spend a decent amount of time learning telecom domain knowledge.
psim1··on Building a Personal VoIP System
Their wiki has always been a bit of a mess. The company Signalwire is largely the same crew as the original FreeSWITCH team.
psim1··on Swarm M138 Modem
Would this need to be attached to an amplifier and large (at least quarter wave) antenna in order to transmit to satellites? Why VHF? Wouldn't upper UHF be a better choice for transmission to satellites?
psim1··on The Future of Thunderbird
I kind of hate Thunderbird because it is in every way worse than beloved Apple Mail.app, except for one: it can do the Microsoft 365 IMAP Oauth2 dance, but Mail.app can't.

Mail.app's native Exchange functionality has broken for me before and caused me to lose mail so I will not trust it. I thought I had the right solution with an IMAP connection to O365 Exchange until they forced that to use Oauth2.

psim1··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
Weirdly, a senior dev from my company was recruited by another company and will be changing jobs in a couple weeks. And to be clear, he is not a unicorn type. He's a good senior developer in a common language.

It's hard for me to understand recruiters "fishing in the neighbor's pond" while there are plenty of unemployed, qualified senior devs out there right now.

psim1··on What we look for in a resume
When I have been the one hiring, whether as a supervisor or as part of a hiring committee, my favorite part of the paperwork has always been the cover letter. I cannot agree with this article's advice saying it is not important. Are you kidding me? Write me a few nice paragraphs about yourself, why you think you're a great match for the position and why you want it. Highlight something from your resume that I am probably only going to otherwise skim. The cover letter is like the first couple minutes of sitting in the interview. We get to know each other a little, and importantly to me, I get to know whether you have half-decent writing skills.
psim1··on Ask HN: Have you made a career move “down” on purpose, and how has it been?
About 7 years ago I got fed up with the company (not the team I was leading) and moved to another company in an IC role. I enjoyed it for a few months and soon realized how much less influence I had as an IC. So I regretted the move. For me there was a ton of value in being able to direct, empower, and encourage the team; allow them to work without distraction; and be part of leadership meetings where bigger decisions were made. I am trying to get back into that kind of role now.
psim1··on Tell HN: Repurposing old iPads as home security cameras
I was excited to read this Tell HN, but quickly deflated. I have an original iPad without a camera. :(
psim1··on The sound of the dialup, pictured (2012)
No need to presume; the ITU-T standards are surprisingly readable!

https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-V.22-198811-I

For this older standard (1200 bps using FSK modulation) it does indeed use separate bands (from section 6.1):

On the general switched telephone network, the modem at the calling data station shall transmit in the low channel and receive in the high channel (call mode). The modem at the answering data station shall receive in the low channel and transmit in the high channel (answer mode).

The newer modem standards are far more sophisticated and I don't know anything about them. I picked this one because I had been working with V.22 in the past year.

psim1··on Twenty five thousand dollars of funny money
This blogger occasionally seems to throw in stories that are made up for the sake of making a point; this is likely one of them, given the inconsistencies.

psim1··on Tell HN: Domain fronting to be blocked on Azure
Good. For every benevolent use case there are a thousand spammers and scammers using this technique for junk and phishing.
psim1··on How to tell a mainframe from a minicomputer from a micro
> Do you remember what software you were running?

Not at all! I was the PC tech and I remember feeding a lot of diskettes into Windows 3.1 machines to load Word Perfect and other office tools of the time.

psim1··on How to tell a mainframe from a minicomputer from a micro
They had the 5362, seemed to be about the size of a two-drawer file cabinet. I recall maybe three or four terminals connected to it from around the office. It was a small manufacturing firm and this computer was a big investment for them.
