prpatel··on Why U.S. Broadband is So Slow
Telco's don't usually advertise "naked DSL." If you search hard enough it's out there.
prpatel··on Scala, Kotlin, Ceylon, gosu..let's start by being honest
Here here. I can not agree more about your statement: "for some people Scala means just too much incidental complexity for too little power gains" I've been telling fellow developers this when asked why I'm not interested in Scala: There isn't enough there for the trade-off in switching to another language. If I use Clojure I get the magic of a LISP. If I use Groovy I get all the power of a dynamic language. If I use Scala, I get..... Java++? Not enough for me, there's so many good options for JVM languages, I will happily use Clojure/Groovy AND plain ol' Java underneath the hood if needed.
prpatel··on Why I Quit My Job to Start a Tech Company
Over here at TripLingo, we collaborate on the direction of the company. Our fearless leader(tm) however, has set the vision from the beginning, and continues to impress the vision with some small tweaks as we've moved forward. But we're a small team still - only 6 core folks - so YMMV if you're in a larger startup.
prpatel··on ActiveMQ: Not ready for prime time
I would suggest getting the "Camel in Action" book from Manning. I always find that it's better to learn something that has real implementation behind it - you see the theory, now here's the code to do it.
prpatel··on Are SSDs worth the money?
Yes. If you're a developer, find an SSD with good IOPS performance. You'll save time/frustration/angst and never want to use a spinner again. Every single developer I've shown my laptop running an SSD and spinning up Xcode/eclipse/RubyMine/ Textmate/Rails/Grails/Tomcat/etc has been shocked at the speed. Once they make they jump, I invariably hear: how did I develop before this? For recommendations on an SSD, have a look at the Intel SSD's, the Crucial C300/C400, or the new Sandforce based drives. I had an Intel X25M-G2 and upgraded to a C300 and loved both.
prpatel··on How to get a job at a startup if you aren’t a developer
1) Learn how to code 2) ..... 3) Profit!
prpatel··on America's Most Promising Startups
That list is OOOLD. Please refrain from posting stuff that's 2 years old.
prpatel··on Rails 3.1 Adopts CoffeeScript, jQuery, Sass and.. Controversy
HAML is a DSL for doing HTML markup & templating, Coffeescript is a "language extension" to JavaScript. How are they playing the same role???
prpatel··on HP CEO: We will build a cloud
I'm still waiting for my "MAKE-IT-RAIN-CLOUD".
prpatel··on How to find a technical co-founder
At the recent StartAtlanta event, I met the founder of TripLingo and we went from concept to prototype in a weekend. We ended up "winning" that event, and have kept moving forward. The great thing about StartAtlanta or similar events is that you get to feel everyone out and decide if you want to pursue the idea, and conversely, keep team members moving forward. It helped greatly that the TripLingo founder and "business dude", Jesse Maddox, was well prepared. He had mockups of the app, spreadsheets with sample data, and a business plan. He had put in 6 months of effort researching, was tech savvy (though not a programmer), and was organized. The point here is that if you're the non-tech-co-founder, putting effort into the things I just mentioned show, and you'll have no problem attracting top geeks to work on your startup.
