proyb2··on The Boring Company [video]
It's not a wasteful when US has huge land and those fuel vehicles need to travel a long distance may encounter car accidents e.g. fatigue, winter, floods, would be benefits from reduce air pollution in the these concept tunnel, in contrast, the size of Singapore is a lot smaller.

The tunnels could use solar energy which is not wasteful.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
Good to know, indeed, the optimization wasn't turned on, it appeared to come close to Go timing. I have tweeted him.
proyb2··on Rust 1.17
What you mentioned JIT is exactly my thought when IBM explained why they like about Swift over Java in JVM.

More technical explanation: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSYKE2_7.0.0/com...

"In practice, methods are not compiled the first time they are called. For each method, the JVM maintains a call count, which is incremented every time the method is called. The JVM interprets a method until its call count exceeds a JIT compilation threshold. Therefore, often-used methods are compiled soon after the JVM has started, and less-used methods are compiled much later, or not at all. The JIT compilation threshold helps the JVM start quickly and still have improved performance. The threshold has been carefully selected to obtain an optimal balance between startup times and long term performance."

> Go has the advantage of memory safety (via GC), plus better concurrency safety, which is lacking in Rust.

Are there any examples you could list?
One of Go GC issue is based on this stouset's discussion https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14174500
proyb2··on Rust 1.17
Just to the same links to your question.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
LLVM is a compiler construction, not a compiler.

If I understand, no languages offer the same assurances, I remember GodBolt is a nice way to explore how it's compile to assembly code you can compare.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
> You could use LLVM to compile any language to LLVM IR, and then to machine code using a backend. Does that mean every language has the same properties as Rust?

Nope, it's largely depend on the language design.
> If Node/Java/Go use GC (or VMs), then aren't they more safe than Rust?

Yes and No, memory allocation is one of the issue in GC. Go is generally more safe on networking but not security where Rust can manage it securely.
This is a good read on Java vs Rust: https://llogiq.github.io/2016/02/28/java-rust.html

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14173716 https://github.com/stouset/secrets/tree/stack-secrets

In fact, we don't have to bother much with GC because it's depend on programmers and job availability. GC was created based on the idea that manage memory is hard for large scale project. It work well for Azul Systems, and they have recently advertised for LLVM engineer to bring more performance where JVM could not.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
Not sure which C compilers you're referring to. If you mean Clang which is also based on LLVM. https://clang.llvm.org/

Clang is a competitor to GCC.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
Rust is based on LLVM just like Swift, Pony, Crystal, etc to compile to native code. Java uses bytecode which will need to translate to machine code in JVM.

Node.js, Java, Go use Garbage Collection for use case where programmers do not have to manage memory.

proyb2··on Rust 1.17
In the previous discussion on Rust Fireflowers https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13272474

One of the successful stories with Rust I read https://users.rust-lang.org/t/success-story-new-rustacean-be...

In other blog, there are benchmarks that Go outperform Rust but I believe the Rust code didn't use buffer read. http://126kr.com/article/5cikidl5bhe

proyb2··on Swift architecture at Uber
There is no mentioned of RN at all, it is because Swift works well for Uber. UberEats uses RN because of multiplatform support with their partners.

Uber Everything is hiring iOS developer for logistic service? I used to work in German logistic which uses Java technology and does having lot of issues everyday. Swift would prove logistic industry in a new way and probably use Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) which is powerful. If Swift will supported Corountines after 4.0, useful for server side swift.

Sorry, I find UberEats UI is distracting with animations. It does not feel native to me however I tried to, the font is awkward to read when Sans Francisco font looks much cleaner on native iOS app.

proyb2··on Toshiba Pares Losses on Report of Apple Investing in Chips
It would make sense to get Intel since lot of development tools and businesses relied on Intel technology. We won't know until LLVM, Clang, Rust and Swift could replace C/C++ in the future.
proyb2··on Toshiba Pares Losses on Report of Apple Investing in Chips
Apple as an ARM cofounder could have bought ARM in the past but they didn't want to own it completely if these could be useful for other industry players. Foxconn would be benefits from Toshiba.

I have noted "took 0.000183 (For one iteration)" :)

Great thanks! I have assume array.array is similar to 2-dimensional array.
proyb2··on Fast Python loops
Interesting read! I'm still missing what "B" in the Python code referring to as well.
proyb2··on Kotlin/Native Tech Preview: Kotlin without a VM
I know Microsoft contributed Coroutines to LLVM and now experimental in 4.0.0 and .Net core.

Which is even awesome for Microsoft to adopt LLVM.

proyb2··on Kotlin/Native Tech Preview: Kotlin without a VM
The problem with Javascript can't handle complex computation where Swift could run on both Android, iOS, embedded, cloud, Linux and web server and majority of C/C++ libraries. Soon they might found way to implement Rust memory model, concurrency and Coroutine like Go. It will be nearly perfect or as good without writing 4 different languages.

Kotlin could run on all supported platforms and reuse Java libraries.

proyb2··on Kotlin/Native Tech Preview: Kotlin without a VM
In addition I feel SCADE.io uses Swift has more production quality than Go. I tested Unsafepointer C in Swift is significantly faster in version 3.1. It is in some case is faster than Go, Ruby, GCC and Java just for fun in benchmark.

Kotlin to LLVM is amazing idea and risky if it will break in Android. Only time will tell.

proyb2··on Kotlin/Native Tech Preview: Kotlin without a VM
If ARC is a concern, I wasn't sure how they will work on Android whereas SCADE.io use Swift to compile native app to Android and iOS is more production ready with Swift built on LLVM and Clang.

How many sample was for Clojure? Less than 10? It mean nothing for a top paying and there is no clear indication who were these developers backgrounds and countries, probably high costs living is a factor for high paid salary.
