proxyon··on Poor in Tech
> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because I was the only person who would say hello to the cleaning lady as she meekly made her rounds around us when we worked late. Everyone else had a long habit of ignoring anyone like her.

I hope no one is gullible enough to believe this. This is bond villain stuff and most certainly does not apply to "tech" as a category. I even worked in Finance and never heard of this kind of behavior.

> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because everyone’s hobby talk was incomprehensible to me. Sailing. Indoor rock climbing. Building robots. Golfing. Sourcing and collecting antiquities. Adult soccer leagues. All I heard was money. Money. Money.

The poorest people in the world play soccer and sports. My parents collected antiques on minimum wage. The biggest antiquers I've known were college students. And as for sailing, most people don't sail on their own boats, they pitch in their physical labor in exchange for getting to participate in the hobby. That's free, you just have to be physically active.

> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because I was afraid to seek mentorship from anyone above me, convinced that even asking would seem like bothersome begging. I watched the people around me network effortlessly, assured of favors and good words put in. I could only think in terms of what I could offer and how I could survive; they were thinking on the next level where they never had to wonder if they were good enough. They were to the business-class manner born, at least.

This has nothing to do with poverty. My cousin grew up poorer than I did and is the most arrogant, direct, and demanding person you'll ever meet. If the job pays $100k he'd ask for $500k.

> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because when I talked about paying off my student loans, people expressed their utter shock that my parents hadn’t put me through Berkeley. Were Mom and Pop simply opposed to public school? Did they disagree with my choice of major?

No one said that. Literally no one is shocked that anyone else has student loans. This is more bond villain hyperbole.

> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because they thought I was kidding when I said I had a GED.

Well yeah, but this has nothing to do with poverty. You were irresponsible enough to drop out of high school and people are rightfully shocked that you're responsible enough to hold a tech job.

> I knew I was the only poor person at my tech startup because I forgot my charger once and absolutely nobody had one old enough to be compatible with my phone.

Everyone knows this is the opposite. We've all seen poor people in brand new shoes and with the latest iPhone and watch. People in poverty actually have the newest phones. That's part of what keeps them in poverty, irresponsible purchasing habits. Meanwhile most tech people I know have far older devices when it comes to smart phones.

I stopped reading here. This isn't serious. OP is a professional victim who is outright misrepresenting things.

proxyon··on Subsidies Awarded to Amazon: at least $4.04B and Counting
You're missing the point hard. You can still tax the corporation by taxing everyone who earns income from it. You just don't tax the business entity itself.
proxyon··on Subsidies Awarded to Amazon: at least $4.04B and Counting
The thing is the assertion that corporate taxes are bad is incredibly mundane. Not in a pro-pro-big business kind of way but in a pro-everyone kind of way. The problem with corporate taxes is that they are easily dodged via the most mundane write-offs, exchanges and planned for deduction. Corporate taxes are offset by a company by simple hiring a tax lawyer. Individual taxes are far harder to dodge and basically require the individual to abandon his/her country in order to do it, or to cheat by putting them in a dark bank account overseas. This is not a partisan issue. If you want a corporation to pay its taxes, put its taxes on the people who make money off that corporation.

Workers at conservative think-tanks breathe oxygen. Ergo, breathing oxygen is wrong.
proxyon··on Subsidies Awarded to Amazon: at least $4.04B and Counting
> That is a very, very bold claim. Please provide bold evidence or reasoning.

No it's not. This is common knowledge in the economics world. Corporations can dodge taxes in ways individuals mostly can't.

proxyon··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
Is this an honest assessment though?

I'm usually running 5+ electron programs (IDE, Slack, Discord, etc), multiple browser tabs, test runners (Jest, Detox), IDE plugins (eslint, auto import, gitlens), an emulated terminal (iTerm2), multiple VMs (android, simulator), xCode, Android Studio, and that's just my base setup. From there add more casual programs like calendar, memos, omnifocus, spotify and so on. An intel core 2 duo would thrash at just 10% of that workload.

I think you're right on this. I've also been irritated at the "eGPUs / dGPUs are no longer necessary" crowd. If an SoC GPU with the performance / size of an RTX could fit into a notebook we'd actually have them in notebooks... but we don't. The fact of the matter is that this technology doesn't exist. So the allegations that GPUs are no longer necessary because SoCs have already wholesale replaced them are comical.

He's well known for almost torpedoing Lerna by committing an insane proprietary license where he called ICE and Palantir fascists who aren't allowed to use Lerna, and included into that any companies who ever do work for ICE or Palantir, which included Microsoft. Microsoft in response had to get to work dropping Lerna from all of its repositories, but instead managed to convince a different maintainer to boot Jamie off the Lerna team. While he was doing all of this he had the gall to call Babel and Lerna HIS personal projects. He wrote stuff like (paraphrasing) "I will not allow Palantir to use my projects." Multiple other maintainers of these projects had to point out to him that these were, literally, not his projects. At the time that he did this he wasn't even the maintainer or core contributor to Lerna. Long story short I will never support anything this guy does. It is incredibly irresponsible to put him anywhere near the levers of power of any significant project or to give him power over employees in a company.

I'm a senior eng in Typescript at a tech company. I will always advocate against adopting this project. Jamie is a perfect example of the toxic attitudes and activism destroying OSS and tech. Lerna or Babel are fine, but then again, they are purely OSS projects, not companies expressly designed to enrich him and reward his toxic activism.
proxyon··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
My hypothesis is that Americans are both hypersexual (due to media, porn abuse, etc) and thus deprived of good sex as a result of the over stimulation toward faked, idealized, porn-ified sex. I have no evidence for this, it is merely a hunch and seems to align with what I have heard from people who have moved here from other countries. My parents themselves were immigrants and were shocked at the hypersexuality when they moved here. Simultaneously to that, they were shocked you couldn't even see a boob on TV. The natural human body itself was censored but gigantic fake boobs and butts were plastered all over MTV and VH1, albeit clothed. They'd also never heard of the over emphasis and anxiety over penis size until they came here.

> open borders

No thanks. Feel free to go conduct extreme social experiments with your own life, not mine.

proxyon··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
It reduces the novelty of real sex and thus the arousal for it. Lots of studies on this.

I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to. At first glance it feels like the 0.000001% of the population who exclusively consume Twitter ragebait. You're writing spiteful, angry creeds, buying entire domain names and angrily announcing an OSS project because a small internet products company doesn't want politics at their workplace. Maybe it's time to log off, gain a sense of proportionality and understand what is truly important in life beyond petty internet beefs and outrage culture.
