propman··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
This is purely an emotional initial reaction to hearing this without knowing most facts, but I just have to vent and for once be part of the outrage culture and make emotionally charged statements before more info comes out.

Uber ruining self driving cars that can save 20k lives each year and improve our economy and get millions out of poverty and improve everyone's quality of life by being short sighted, financial driven, and bringing the worst aspects of Silicon Valley to the extreme.

I am so sorry to everyone at Google and Waymo who have tried so hard to not let anything like this happen by being extremely cautious and safe. Ughhhh I feel so frustrated, this is going to cause so much backlash.

Travis, Anthony and whoever else pushed for this to go ahead without caring about safety is evil. This action doesn't have a direct correlation of evil like directly murdering someone. But these highly intelligent individuals ignored their conscience and the easy deduction that actions to compromise safety, laws, decency for quick profit are immoral. Whether they admit it or not they KNEW that this was a high possibility and refused to take precautions creating this awful culture. 20k lives a year, and all the benifits that will be delayed for years are on their head.

They won't face any consequences, just convince themselves of absolution of guilt and do nothing to remedy the situation, but I have no respect for them.

propman··on Stephen Hawking has died
An inspiring role model in so many aspects, RIP to one of the greatest minds. I strongly believe that his perseverance through his circumstances is even more admirable than his research. It's so easy to become bitter and jaded when a shocking event like that occurs. At the best, you make peace and live as happy a life as you can...but to stand tall and rebuke Fate, defy all odds and even banish almost certain Death for decades through sheer willpower and passion for knowledge is something else. And to hold that tiny, bright flame against an unrelenting torrent for 55 years, always curious, always following his passion...the world lost one of the greats tonight.
propman··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
The clear separation between information and entertainment is BRILLIANTLY said. Seems straightforward but it's really important. Why is Twitter, a cesspool of memes, rap, sports, and kardashians mostly used by kids under 25 the primary means of breaking stories? Why is so much news on there? Anytime profitability, entertainment, short attention spans and news all get entwined, the resulting outcome is clear.

Facebook, Reddit, twitter, Snapchat have all started for entertainment and switched to catchbyte reaction/outrage culture news and normal news has turned into a mess as well.

I say regulations wiping trending news feed off Facebook, twitter and Snapchat is a start. Perhaps funding to any group that meets set in stone criteria regardless of political affiliation gets some federal funding to make up for the cost of making real journalism. That journalism must be fact checked and we hold them accountable.

People are desensitized to everything now and when shocking news is made every 15 minutes and the world is so connected we become numb to so much and that is incredibly dangerous

propman··on 23andMe Granted FDA Authorization for Genetic Test on Cancer Risk
I think the OP you responded to is being intentionally obtuse, you have made your point clear repeatedly. If you are aware you have CF gene and are also aware your partner does too, then you will not mate with them and instead find another mate. Some diseases can be eliminated like this.

I also have a condition similar to you and there is no way I'm letting another child suffer with that, so I'm not going to ever mate with a woman who carries that gene.

propman··on YouTube Hiring for Some Positions Excluded White and Asian Males, Lawsuit Says
NBA players on average are 2 inches shorter than listed height because that includes shoes. IT is 5 foot 9 and potentially shorter. Half of the best players in the league are point guards with heights ranging from 6 feet to 6'3 again with shoes. Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry, Lillard, Chris Paul, Westbrook all fall under this. Average American Height is 5'10. 7 foot tall players have mostly struggled last 5 years so you don't have to encourage kids to grow taller to play in the league.

Asians and South Asians are vastly underrepresented in the Music, Entertainment, and Acting industries and Asian and South Asian women are vastly underrepresented in Fashion, Modeling, etc, industries. Sometimes freedom of choice results in outcomes that we shouldn't try to force but it's not white and black. In STEM, gender disparity results in many problems for females, in the other industries I mentioned it's significantly due to connections, glass ceiling, a certain type of "boys club" but also due to choice. I agree with role models, and removing barriers, but I highly highly disagree with excluding individuals based on their race. That is racist and I will oppose that to the core of my being

propman··on Facebook rolls out job posts to become the blue-collar LinkedIn
I'm fairly anti-Facebook but this is actually a great idea. A big reason for unemployment is the inefficiencies it takes to take all the steps from motivating yourself in finding a job to getting hired. A lot of unemployed sometimes need a kick in the butt because it's hard to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities (been there), so this partly eliminates the first step of making the decision to get you stuff together and look for jobs by making it come directly to you. Good job Facebook!
propman··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
Did you take a look at that google executive Forrest Hayes who died from heroin OD injected by a sugar baby from seeking arrangement? I think that's a huge story in itself. The Bay Area has created a lot of wealth, a substantial amount given to individuals who display characteristics of introverted, libertarian, extreme individuality, which along with high drug use has resulted in a burgeoning sex for money trade. In my extremely limited and potentially erroneous pov, this has indirectly further increased drug usage for both the women and men. There are a lot of negative externalities from Silicon Valley and multiple threads to pull on but the extremes of everything from politics to high costs of home ownership has resulted in some quite depressing realities.
propman··on Doctors, Revolt
No, I looked at how much the exact same procedure using the exact same equipment would cost by a doctor in another state who made the pricing relatively transparent.
propman··on Doctors, Revolt
Was charged $70k for a procedure that should have cost 5k max even with nurses and doctors and materials. I also was under the impression it was covered by my insurance because the front desk said she would call me if it wasn't. I was also given wrong information about what type of treatment I was going to get and when I requested to check with the doctor, I was given the option of "do you want the procedure or am ai going to just cancel it" and if it was cancelled, the next available appointment with the doctor was in 5 months.

I payed just $3k, but that was ridiculous to be surprised by and I'm still confused what the treatment plan is because front desk didn't schedule me until July. The doctor is great but support staff has become so beuracratic...

propman··on Technology Change Not the Culprit in Wages Falling Behind US Productivity Gains
But if you have access to machines, then so do your competitors. You won't be generating 50x more profit, perhaps you'll be generating a few percent higher until the market reaches equilibrium and then the owner will make the same as or slightly higher than what he was before depending on how quickly he adapted. The end benefit is the economy as a whole because garments now will cost a whole lot less. Whichever competitor stitches by hand will go out of business within a year so the baseline to make even a cent of profit is with the machine.

Also, the owner took a huge risk and big loans purchasing the machine. If something goes wrong, he's on the hook for it. If the next year, the country decides to implement NAFTA, then the machine is worthless because it can be made in Mexico far cheaper than in his own town, forcing owner to go out of business and eat the costs. Meanwhile, the worker who gets laid off loses no money in his transition to a new job. The economy, however, benifits again because garments are even cheaper than before.

propman··on Facebook lost around 2.8M U.S. users under 25 last year
A commenter here told me that it's now possible to delete Facebook while keeping messenger, so that's what I did. Don't miss it at all.

Agree with other posters that it's annoying how anything you like or comment on is broadcasted to your entire feed. Makes you not want to comment or like amything.

propman··on China Will Overtake the US in AI, said Alphabet's Eric Schmidt
Yes! Another thread a while back had a good discussion on this. Gmail, google search and YouTube search have all been terrible last few years. Ever since they started touting ML, I think they started to cut costs and it's been terrible using all 3 services whereas they used to be amazing a few years before.
propman··on Scientists find massive reserves of mercury in permafrost
I have no knowledge about how accurate measurements of mercury are but from this and the article, it seems pretty conclusive that there is a lot of it with potentially very dangerous outcomes. I guess we can add another one to the list of dangers associated with climate change. Also how important funding is for projects.

I just recently read about iron fertilization as a potential tool to fight climate change, can't believe I'd never read about it before. Potential downsides but still very interesting, especially if economical.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_fertilization

I strayed far away from the research side of things back in school, but I wish we had more bold disrupters or shapers in the field. I know it's antithetical to the personality, skills, structure, and honestly the traits to succeed in the field but someone who'd be bold, sway the media, public opinion and congress with visions for deep funding and just dive in and trailblaze and get stuff done instead of so much research. I dont keep up with the field and Im sure this is extremely naive but just my thoughts.

propman··on Dow plunges 1000 points
It's 69.2B per year, 692B over 10 years. The tax cut deficit is stated over 10 years at 1.5T without the economic benifits and 1T over 10 years with benifits scored at standard and 500B with benifits scored with dynamic.
propman··on Dow plunges 1000 points
Thanks, edited. I can see how that was confusing
propman··on Dow plunges 1000 points
The top rate before was 39.6% for over 480k, over 480k now hits the 35% and 37% mark and that is a HUGE difference.

Let's only consider how that effects the top 1% and a rough estimate. Currently that's around 1.73M filers with an average income of 1.4M a year. Under the new tax rules the average 1% will save $40,000 over 480k (will obviously save more under 480k but not counting that). That totals out to be $692B in tax cuts over 10 years or in other words basically 70% of the tax cut deficit based on standard scoring and 138% based on dynamic scoring (obv not exact). So this could have been a revenue neutral tax cut even after a massive tax cut to everyone, just a slightly less of a tax cut to the top 1%.

In other words 70% of the tax plan deficit over the decade is coming from cuts from the top 1%. I would have preferred a different allocation that would have decreased their tax burdens but not by that much. Obviously this doesn't consider many smaller factors but it's a fairly accurate estimate.

propman··on Dow plunges 1000 points
There is no way we enter a recession this year unless something comes out of left field. Interviews with hundreds of economists and they think this is the least likely year to have a recession in history. Gdp is not going to drop due to the tax cuts. The cuts might cause problems in a few years but you have to realize marker doesn't correlate with the economy. In fact it's dropping because the economy is picking up steam causing interest rates to rise.
propman··on Dow plunges 1000 points
Inflation finally is going up after years and we can get out of this stagnating economy. Wage growth up 3% in new January report and so we can finally expect interest rates to rise faster like they did in the past. Many investors, especially institutional ones have for years thought the stock market has been over priced but where else to park money because interest rates are too low?

Overall the 3% wage growth is huge for the economy especially because unemployment is so low. Other economic indicators also show a very healthy economy so when the next recession hits we'll have the tools to stop it. Inflation not rising has like stated baffled everyone so glad we are now dealing with what we know rather than wading into the unknown. The normal rules seem to apply again.

This is also why presidents shouldn't make their number one accomplishment the market because often times market crashes don't correlate with recessions or a poor economy. Trump did have a huge effect on the market, but not 10% which he thinks he did. That said the market is still higher than it was 5 weeks ago.

Risk averse savers will finally be rewarded. My biggest fear is the huge deficit, and the huge spending. I think the tax cut is great long term but could have been made significantly better, and could have scored under $100B deficit over 10 years under dynamic scoring (currently at 500B) if they decreased the top rate but still made it significantly higher than what it is today, and made the global min tax per individual countries but payable over time rather than all combined.

propman··on Amazon, Berkshire, JPMorgan to Create Healthcare Company
Agreed. Kaiser does well for the vast majority of problems and for the averafe person, but anything specific, out of the norm, or challenging Kaiser fails. You sometimes need to see someone not in network and that's the main reason for insurance. Anyone really can help treat you for common ailments, but when something unique comes it's better to have the options to see the best in the field.
propman··on We Are Truly Fucked: Everyone Is Making AI-Generated Fake Porn Now
Wow I just went through this and the deepfakes subreddit, this has SERIOUS case of abuse all over it. How soon till high school kids bully peers over this? Or even teachers?

Blackmail, revengeporn, bullying, harassment. I'm a bit shocked right now at how real it is. I saw one link that was almost undetectable even with very complicated movements. We need some regulations over this as soon as possible to prevent abuse.

propman··on Forging a Swiss Lens: How Zurich's tech scene changed my view of SV
Need to get this fixed. A bipartisan bill cosponsered by 340 house representatives is there but Paul Ryan is not allowing the vote on it. Perhaps not the limit fixed, but the backlog that's currently there for H1bs. It will be extremely beneficial for the country, for the H1bs and family, and would drive up tech wages. Literally no negatives.

Their cause is even more sympathetic than DACA. I sincerely believe if they were protesting and more politically involved, they'd easily pass it through but no noise is being made. That's a good thing personally in my opinion since I'm turned off by protests and think that it divides us, and most protesters are very aggressive and bluntly not very bright. However, protests are very effective in American History in order to make change and if I were in their position I'd say that's the best bet. Some protests seem politically manufactured and arguments easily refuted, but movements like the civil rights movements and the American Disability Act would not have been possible without protests.

propman··on Richest 1% took 82% of new global wealth last year, report says
Except poverty rates are dropping astronomically and are the best ever. More people than ever have access to food, water (this will unfortunately likely significantly change negatively in the next decade), electricity due to investments in infrastructure and technology. People in poor countries have access to extremely cheap smart phones and unlimited information at the tips of their fingertips so the chances of upwards mobility are higher than ever in the 3rd world.

Previous barriers to upwards mobility such as race, ethnicity, caste are constantly being improved. Health, especially in Africa, has significantly improved.

We are at the height of society. In the developed world everyone no matter who you are has access to free food (SNAP), water, shelter(HUD, public housing, section 8), the entire world's information (library), healthcare (Medicaid- regardless of what politics keeps saying anyone making under 17k a year has FREE comprehensive Healthcare), education (free public schools for 14 years, heavily subsidized community colleges). Goods cost less than ever due to globalization, global economy is at its peak surpassing 2007. Unemployment is near an all time low.

Only manufactured revolutions can occur and only in the non developed world

propman··on China’s Economic Growth Looks Strong, Maybe Too Strong
I read a while back that local governments would significantly artificially inflate their manufacturing, construction, spending, and raw materials numbers. There were dozens that seemed so far fetched they were easily spotted as fake by a professor that did little research.

When you have govt officials who are forced to increase growth and you'll look bad/fired if you don't and no authority is safeguarding this, then these actions seem fairly logical.

Interesting to see how perception is sometimes as good as reality.

propman··on Apple plans new U.S. campus, to pay $38B in foreign cash taxes
They will still be taxed on foreign profits. It's the global minimum tax of 11%. So if they are based in Ireland they'd pay 2% in Ireland and 9% to America. If in China, they'll pay 15% in China and 0% in America.

Regardless of this, stopping the flow of capital and investment into the country with a 35% tax is extremely dumb. Everyone will say effective is far less, but it's far less because of foreign profits and IP stashed in Ireland and effective may be 20% for tech, but marginal to bring back in the states is still 35%

propman··on Apple plans new U.S. campus, to pay $38B in foreign cash taxes
Global minimum tax. No more rinse and repeat thanks to the tax bill. 11% tax on all foreign profits so this eradicates tax havens in Ireland and the islands because if you are paying 2% then you pony up the other 9% to Uncle Sam.

Last repatriation, the companies did exactly what you said but now that is no longer possible.

propman··on Memo: Foxconn cost to Wisconsin nearing $4.5B
I don't disagree with giving out tax credits, I jut disagree with giving them to unreliable companies like Foxconn without a more firm contract. I also potentially disagree with how big the breaks are.

Tesla received a $1.3B incentive from Nevada and a bunch of other perks. At the time, I believed it was a clear net positive for Nevada and I haven't had the chance to look in depth about this deal, but I hope it's the same here.

This isn't a Republican or democrat thing by the way. Both sides do this about equally. Just like Amazon bidding for their campus.

propman··on Google Memory Loss
The little passionate website in the 2000s used to be the best source of information if properly vetted. Now it's only big websites regurgitating the same superficial content written by paid writers who have no expertise in the subject matter. They instead just copy other superficial sources.

I think this has dumbed down society because it certainly has dumbed down me. Also, complicated topics are dumbed down to 1 sentence answers and it's very difficult to get detailed information about something. Ironically, I've started to go back to purchasing and reading books if I really want to go in depth on a subject.

propman··on Google Memory Loss
I'm so glad I'm not the only person thinking that. Last year and a half or so I've started scouring forums and reading studies on google scholar rather than searching the web. And it's gotten worse and worse each year.

I've been lazy and so acclimatized to the UI that I haven't changed, but I plan to now. It's especially difficult finding medical information. Mind boggling how 6-7 years ago it used to be so much better.

propman··on Huawei’s CEO going off-script to rage at US carriers was the best speech of CES
Read on the WSJ a few days ago how Huawei got started was straight stealing the exact same patented technology as an American firm and then could produce more cheaply thanks to government help.

America has to act now to prevent this kind of stuff, not just place a bandaid. Huawei is now cheaper and better than competitors but their model has been something Chinese and let's be honest most other countries have tried to implement. Props to them though
