profunctor··on ‘A Minefield’: How Scholars Who Don’t Drink Navigate the Conference Social Scene
I found there to be a lot of drinking academics. Maybe in the US its different?

profunctor··on Climate change and the 75% problem
[0] sounds like you're saying "my gut says its improbable that we can detect sea level rise 50 years ahead". Why does it seem that way? These scientists are using evidence for these estimates so they are not pulled out of the air.

[1] Are you going to remain skeptical without looking into it, seems more like you're dismissive rather than skeptical but maybe I am reading this wrong.? How could any researcher ever make the claim that something is a big issue and needs to be investigated further and fixed without triggering this skeptical reflex?

profunctor··on Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America
That didn't happen under Eisenhower when the top tax rate was 92%. Although I think its not a 92% income tax that is needed but a high tax on capital.
profunctor··on Break up Google
Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Tesla, Microsoft, Uber etc etc. Google have a very powerful position but its not like they don't have formidable competitors in every field except maybe search.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. That money could be keeping tens of thousands of people off the streets and out of hospitals.

But they are not in the eu. Surely the higher percentage of people from Britain who want to leave the EU would like to be treated like a non-EU country.

I think it is important to show our financial laws have real teeth. A hard sentence acts as a warning to others.
profunctor··on Wil Self: In Praise of Difficult Novels
I wonder if it was the authors intent to write an article on this subject where I had to google several words to really understand what he was saying, to write a difficult article on the subject or difficult novels. Or maybe I just need to read more. I still don't quite understand mimesis.
profunctor··on Gates says billionaires should pay 'significantly' more taxes
The foundation must give away all of it's money within 50 years of their death. Sure their kids will have nice jobs but I do see that as altruistic.
profunctor··on Show HN: Takehome.io – Time-limited coding challenges for interviews via Git
I thought I would chip in on the pro-time limit side as we seem to be underrepresented so far. I certainly have been given challenges that supposedly take 6 hours but clearly take much longer than that. An entire weekend at least. I don't have that time and I declined but if it really was a 6 hour test they would have gotten an attempt from me. A time limit makes it fair for those with other commitments.
