Interesting. Thanks!

Capitalism doing its (positive) thing. Awesome to hear, thank you!

> There's plenty of Lithium in them there hills.

Good to hear!

Reason why I thought there was a shortage was because there was a major push to recover Li from old phones a few years back. I have 4-5 old unused phones lying around my house. (Mostly because there's old text messages in them that I'm hoarding.) I presume it's the same for others. And I was wondering whether there's enough Li for new phones.

Where are they getting all the lithium from, anyone know? I thought we would have a major shortage by now.
profsummergig··on Silence Is a Commons by Ivan Illich (1983)
I remember armies of "stenographers" and "bookkeepers" in the central areas of office buildings.
profsummergig··on Silence Is a Commons by Ivan Illich (1983)
I just looked up the Wiki page for the book. Prescient.

> Anyone with basic numeracy and imagination could imagine what the future held at that point.

Yet most of us (myself included) are in denial (willful or just delusional) about what AI is going to do.

profsummergig··on Silence Is a Commons by Ivan Illich (1983)
Computers could hardly do anything back then. Mostly backend data processing.

Yet this speech could have been written today.

Intriguing.

profsummergig··on CP/M creator Gary Kildall's memoirs released as free download
Kildall may have also invented ghosting.

I remember watching a documentary. IBM officials showed up at Kildall's house twice to convince him to sell/license CP/M to them. Pre-planned meetings. He ghosted them both times. One of those times they waited hours for him.

profsummergig··on Show HN: MCP server for searching and downloading documents from Anna's Archive
My understanding of Anna's Archive is that one has to download large zip files (>10 Gb) containing thousands of books even if one wants only a single book.

Am I correct here?

Does this MCP server allow one to download just a single book?

I remember once using an IPFS based tool to download a single 200-year-old, out-of-copyright copy of "Last of the Mohicans" from Anna's Archive. It worked, but was very very complicated to figure out how to make it work.

profsummergig··on The New York Times wants your private ChatGPT history – even the deleted parts
This is a nuclear bomb sized development if it's true that all ChatGPT chats will be released to NYTimes lawyers to comb through.

It's not going to stop the rise of LLMs. But one should expect it to cause a lot of very strange news in the next couple of years (lawful leaks [i.e. "discovery"], unlawful leaks, unintended leaks, etc.).

The Justice system (pretty much anywhere) is amenable to being incentivized. It looks like NYT has found the right judge (take that how you will).

profsummergig··on China Dominates 44% of Visible Fishing Activity Worldwide
FWIW, China also produces enormous (enormous) quantities of seafood from caged underwater oceanic farms. It's the future of fishing IMHO.

The rich, everywhere in the world, will continue to seek wild-caught though. (While they publicly rail against the poor eating wild-caught. Such is how the wheels turn.).

> So, what does that mean to the average American?

Don't know, don't care.

Educated, high-IQ people know what it means. The kind I was targeting my original comment to. Because it's HN. I expected people knew what it means on here. And apparently the educated, high-IQ ones do.

From Merriam Webster:

of or relating to a republic, rather than to a monarchy, tyranny, oligarchy, etc.
profsummergig··on Sam Altman and Jony Ive 'IO' Lawsuit Copy [pdf]
Is it a royal title? Or would the pedant argue that it's not a title bestowed by royals (i.e. a royal title)?

My statement included "royal titles".

profsummergig··on Klein Bottle Amazon Brand Hijacking (2021)
I wanted to try out the tee-shirt hustle once.

There was a cool design (or at least I thought so) I came up with. Had about 100 of those printed.

Went to Amazon to get a seller account:

1) learned that if I had only 1 tee-shirt with a single design to sell, I couldn't get the account.

2) after researching the competition, discovered that many of the tee-shirt designs for sale were:

    a) clearly in copyright violation (e.g. Disney characters on some mom & pop store.

    b) their images on their store were just a photoshopped tee-shirt. I.e., not photos of the actual tee-shirt they had for sale. But the design photoshopped on to a photo of a blank tee-shirt.
Boggled my mind that Amazon was okay with this.
profsummergig··on ChatGPT is my static site generator
I'm not going back to a rotary phone to save electricity. Sorry.
profsummergig··on ChatGPT is my static site generator
Not surprising that you didn't understand my point. (You won't understand. It's okay. You lack the imagination and mindset necessary to understand.)
profsummergig··on ChatGPT is my static site generator
4 billion OPs saving a minute = 4 billion minutes saved.

Add it all up = trillions of hours saved.

Ergo, plenty more time to work on facilitating energy too cheap to meter.

(You won't understand. It's okay. You lack the imagination and mindset necessary to understand.)

profsummergig··on ChatGPT is my static site generator
I agree. A goal of humanity should be to make energy too cheap to meter. Using AI will help us get there. Every minute OP saves using ChatGPT instead of a text editor, OP can devote to other things that could incrementally get us there.
profsummergig··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)

In the late 90's there were free WYSIWYG apps that generated reliable HTML/CSS. I did a deep search recently into finding the Microsoft FrontPage equivalent of today, and the only one I could find that worked reliably was Adobe Dreamweaver, and it's not free.

(Kompozer, Brackets, SeaMonkey, BlueGriffon, etc. did not work reliably for me. I found that TinyMCE etc. are WYSIWYG for text, but not for positioning [i.e. they are "rich text editors"])

Why did such free WYSIWYG apps to generate HTML/CSS die out? Anyone have theories?

"major discovery that would completely upset our understanding of things"

- such things happen regularly.

'"there is no imaginable technology that could do this" is correct.'

- i'm so glad i don't have this mindset.

profsummergig··on The curse of Toumaï: an ancient skull and a bitter feud over humanity's origins
Totally agree about findings. In fact, oppositional researchers should be given the opportunity -- by law -- to refute claims. They should be given 100% access to all the evidence for a period of time.
