profsummergig··on Steve Ballmer Interview
TIL that Ballmer built their enterprise division from scratch.

Figures. It was a highly profitable division that nobody could figure out what it did or how.

profsummergig··on Territorial Markings as a Predictor of Driver Aggression and Road Rage (2008)
I like this sort of study/theory that imparts practical, actionable tips on how to reduce problems in one's life.

Been on a driving safety kick lately. There's lots of alpha on the table. My most important rules for myself: minimize driving, avoid rush hours.

profsummergig··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
I don't want to argue with you, but you can always install a non-Google fork of Android on the phone. It's the Google fork of Android OS that this article is about.
profsummergig··on A Crack in the Cosmos
For me it went off the rails in the middle, and I couldn't follow what was going on any more. Lesson in there (for me). Stories need to have a tight plot.
profsummergig··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
The canary in the coal mine is that tomorrow Windows or macOS could do the same with PCs.
profsummergig··on Altered states of consciousness induced by breathwork accompanied by music
It's against the TOS of HN to tell people that without rational justifications. That's what I was told by a mod when I did that.
profsummergig··on How to Fix Your Context
Thank you, I watched it. The key takeaway I got was that the client (browser, I suppose) does the actual usage of such tools. The user hands over control of these tools to the AI (and the tool-use happens in the background so it might look to the user like the AI is the one doing the actual usage of the tools).
profsummergig··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
> a 10ft cube full of dirt

suspended in air

profsummergig··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
> you only need to go down 10 ft or so before you hit the average annual temperature

Is this because of geothermal energy leaking upwards? If so, it's not the dirt, it's the geothermal energy.

profsummergig··on Standard Thermal: Energy Storage 500x Cheaper Than Batteries
I do like how well and concisely they've explained not only the technology, but the exact use case, on their landing page.
profsummergig··on How to Fix Your Context
This seems to be an important article.

However it uses various terms that I'm not sure of the definition for.

E.g. the word "Tool".

How can I learn about the definitions of these words? Will reading prior articles in the series help? Please advise.

profsummergig··on FFmpeg 8.0
Thank you.
profsummergig··on FFmpeg 8.0
Just seeking a clarification on how this would be done:

One would use gemini-cli (or claude-cli),

- and give a natural language prompt to gemini (or claude) on what processing needs to be done,

- with the correct paths to FFmpeg and the media file,

- and g-cli (or c-cli) would take it from there.

Is this correct?

profsummergig··on Obsidian Bases
Thanks for this tip.

I've seen this feature off and on in some online code editors. I didn't know this was a (universal?) Markdown feature. Is it supposed to work universally in all Markdown editors (e.g. VSCode's Markdown view)?

profsummergig··on Obsidian Bases
I've used Obsidian and Tangent. For whatever reason, I've found Tangent's code highlighting brighter, more colorful, and (maybe hence?) more easily readable. Obsidian is more muted. Steve Jobs would have preferred Obsidian.
profsummergig··on Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes
Same.

Strong recommendation for Wim Hof method if you're undergoing acute stress. Really calms me down.

But stay away from water. Do it on your bed.

profsummergig··on Obsidian Bases
Off topic, but I discovered this recently:

http://tangentnotes.com/

Similar to Obsidian, but offers good code syntax highlighting in markdown files.

I found it useful for reading code in markdown.

profsummergig··on What's the strongest AI model you can train on a laptop in five minutes?
Readers: I'm looking for toy, quick AI exercises that can be trained on a laptop, and help the doer increase their confidence in AI concepts (learning by doing, and all that).

The OP fits the bill.

If you can suggest other such exercises, please share in reply to this post.

Thank you.

profsummergig··on Starbucks in Korea asks customers to stop bringing in printers/desktop computers
having the public on the "hook" for them is more responsible than forcing private establishments to pick up the tab. starbucks doesn't want to be on the hook for them either.
profsummergig··on The value of institutional memory
Back when Anderson Consulting hadn't yet disgraced itself, a corp I worked for hired them for a cost-cutting project. "Find ways we can cut costs."

Blew my mind that 22-year olds, fresh out of good-brand universities (their "qualification"), were doing the research on how to cost-cut. Chesterton's fences all over the place were violated. It was sad watching the slow-moving disaster.

profsummergig··on Wild pigs' flesh turning neon blue in California
This was discovered while someone was "processing" a pig.

"Processing" usually means taking the meat out for consumption, the skin for leather, etc.

Any idea why the meat of a wild pig was being processed in CA? What would they have done with it?

profsummergig··on How to make almost anything (2019)
It's never too late. Fond resources to do it now (YouTube, your college's syllabi,etc.). Document your journey. Put it on YouTube. Heck, I'll watch what you did and try to do it myself. Serious.
profsummergig··on Australia’s gains in wheat-farm productivity
They kind of have free land available to anyone who wants to farm. Maybe that helps.

Land is a huge expense in places with high population density (e.g. India).

Australia also produces a huge amount of high-quality mangoes. In the desert. Respect. They're very very strong on water management.

profsummergig··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
An undiagnosed alcoholic (IMHO) I used to know,

would happily spend 6 hours any evening, drinking with anyone, gossiping about completely useless things.

They could be doing this with complete strangers whom they would never meet again,

they could even be doing this with someone visiting to let them know that they were going to sue them (actually happened at least once).

They thought they were very "social".

Yeah, if this is what "sociality" means, please spare me its gifts.

profsummergig··on Gemini 2.5 Deep Think
The part I cannot understand is why for many AI offerings, I cannot make out what each pricing tier does with a quick glance.

What happened to the simplicity of Steve Jobs' 2x2 (consumer vs.pro, laptop vs. desktop)?

profsummergig··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
Mitochondria health all comes down to sleep.
profsummergig··on Maintaining Weight Loss
I agree. If one resistance-trains hard, the body will prioritize retaining muscle.
profsummergig··on Maru OS – Use your phone as your PC
The mouse right-click on a PC.

What's the equivalent of that for a phone? Is it press-and-hold?

profsummergig··on Return of wolves to Yellowstone has led to a surge in aspen trees
You seem very well-informed on the matter.
profsummergig··on Solar-plus-storage technology is improving quickly
Interesting. I was aware of Sodium and potentially Zinc being used for stationery situations.

I thought Lithium was used because it was lighter than the others. Good to know planes can use Sodium batteries. There's plenty of Sodium!
