profsummergig··on Gondwanaland: The search for a land before (human) time
I attended a talk by a geology professor about features in my area.

Mind completely blown. My area was once under the ocean. And the rocks I see in my regular walks bear clear evidence of having been in contact with water long-term.

Another mind blowing thing: if one digs 10 feet in my area, one hits a bed of limestone. And limestone is constructed from the skeletons of past marine life. And marble is compressed limestone. It just goes on and on. Simply mind-blowing field of study.

profsummergig··on Gondwanaland: The search for a land before (human) time
I find geology's power fascinating.

A person was once able to surmise from geological features that India was once part of Africa.

(He was resoundingly mocked of course.)

But this wasn't a different prompt that made it work better. Here they created a database of prior human created comments with dev ratings of how good the devs found them.

I found this article surprisingly enjoyable and interesting and if like to find more like it.

profsummergig··on Is stuff online worth saving?
Instead of saving them as PDFs, I started saving web pages using a Chrome extension called Single File [1] (after testing it, of course).

To my dismay, some saved files (.htm extension) didn't open when I wanted to open them.

So I'm glad people are discussing ways to archive web pages while that reproduce the original page faithfully.

Curious re: "linear algebra".

What kind of understanding is needed? A basic understanding? It's a vast and unending subject.

And there are well known software apps that do linear algebra these days. Do you folks use a particular software to do it?

Engineering Technician: what does an hour in the life of such work look like?

Thanks.

profsummergig··on Popeye and Tintin enter the public domain in 2025 along with Faulkner, Hemingway
Curious about something:

- let's say original Tintin works were created from 1929 to 1969.

- does this mean only the works released in 1929 are now "remixable"?

- or does it mean that the "concept of Tintin" is now going to be in the public domain?

- (I'm pretty sure the works from 1969 will not be in the public domain).

profsummergig··on The Price of American Retreat
Anyone know if these long think-pieces by extremely busy extremely powerful people are ghost-written or self-written? And if they are ghost-written, why doesn't the ghost-writer (e.g. Obama's "speechwriter") get to share in the writing credit?
profsummergig··on Starting a Business at 60: My Father's Story
Family dairy farm could be involved in:

- straightforward milk harvesting.

- paneer (a type of cottage cheese, and an Indian staple, the principle source of protein for vegetarians. when vegetarian Indians [in India, not necessarily elsewhere] mention cheese, this is "ackshually" what they're talking about).

- yogurt (called "curd" or "curds" in India. a staple that's eaten raw, or added to curries while cooking). Fun fact: till a generation ago, most yogurt in India was made at home (or in the shop in the case of eating establishments) using starter that had been passed down for generations. (if one branch of the family got thicker, tastier yogurt than another branch [from their starter], the first branch would share their starter with the second branch -- if they had cordial relations.)

profsummergig··on Misperception of the facial appearance that the opposite-sex desires
They look arguably same to me.

Except in the women's faces. The ones women predicted look more fat to me (they're supposed to look more thin). So, to me, they look opposite of what they're supposed to be.

profsummergig··on Notre Dame Cathedral reopens
I read somewhere that the catacombs were the result of needing cemetery land for building on.

What an effort that must have been! Convincing people that their ancestors could be extracted from the ground and stored as skeletons in caves underground. What a massive amount of land that must have freed up!

profsummergig··on What did Steve Jobs mean by: Dropbox / storage being 'a feature, not a product.'
Fair point. So in this conceptualization, Google's "product" is advertising, and search is a feature that supports advertising.
profsummergig··on What did Steve Jobs mean by: Dropbox / storage being 'a feature, not a product.'
> E.g. I never, ever run Dropbox's 'app'. I have no interest in their weird way of looking at files. I just want my docs to be available everywhere. That's it.

Thank you. This is the kind of intuitive example I was seeking.

profsummergig··on What did Steve Jobs mean by: Dropbox / storage being 'a feature, not a product.'
How do we know for certain (certain) that Search is not a product? After all, hasn't Google made billions off of it? If it's not a product, then is it a feature? What is it a feature of? If neither product nor feature, what is it?

I want to download my first HuggingFace model, and play with it. If you know of a resource that can help me decide what to start with, please share. If you don't, no worries. Thanks again.

profsummergig··on Llama-3.3-70B-Instruct
Please help me understand something.

I've been out of the loop with HuggingFace models.

What can you do with these models?

1. Can you download them and run them on your Laptop via JupyterLab?

2. What benefits does that get you?

3. Can you update them regularly (with new data on the internet, e.g.)?

4. Can you finetune them for a specific use case (e.g. GeoSpatial data)?

5. How difficult and time-consuming (person-hours) is it to finetune a model?

(If HuggingFace has answers to these questions, please point me to the URL. HuggingFace, to me, seems like the early days of GitHub. A small number were heavy users, but the rest were left scratching their heads and wondering how to use it.)

Granted it's a newbie question, but answers will be beneficial to a lot of us out there.

profsummergig··on Motivating Personal Growth by Seeking Discomfort
There's so much word-salad in abstracts, that I feel like I'm not sure what something is saying.

You're right in the "edit".

However, the results seem tautological and associative.

- Certain things cause discomfort.

- If you do more of certain things, you develop more motivation to do them.

- Scientific Conclusion: the discomfort caused the motivation.

profsummergig··on Motivating Personal Growth by Seeking Discomfort (2022)
> we suggest that seeking discomfort as a signal of growth can increase motivation

Can someone help me understand this please? With an example? I haven't read the paper, just the abstract. I can barely understand the abstract, I am not going to understand the paper.

Per the paper, does the "discomfort" need to be in the same arena as that of the "motivation" one wants?

E.g.: If I want to learn a new language, does the discomfort need to relate to the language, or is it enough to do something like taking cold showers?

(FWIW, I have a strong suspicion that most Psych papers, including this one, have inadequate evidence. But I still like to understand what they're claiming.)

profsummergig··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US

This already happened to me. Sort of.

Saw an advt for Air Jordans for $7. With a pic of actual Air Jordans. Thought to myself, "it's only $7, let's see what happens".

A very sorry looking pair of shoes arrived a couple weeks later. With "Air Jordan" printed on them. They weren't actual Air Jordans.

There was no way, absolutely no way, to get in touch with the Chinese company that did this.
