profgubler··on IPhone OS 4.0 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
Google has said themselves they think mobile advertising is their future. That is the reason behind the huge android push. It isn't their main cash cow now, but they know it will be and I think I heard they think that within a 5 yearish span.
profgubler··on WhiteyBoard: An Instant Whiteboard For your Instant Office
Just a note. You are already using gmail so why not sign up for google apps so you can have an email that isn't gmail. It looks a lot more professional and it won't cost you anything as long as you don't have more than I think 3 users on it.
profgubler··on Mahalo's disappearing noindex tags
I normally see north of 80 on the sites I work with, but I have never seen as high as you have gotten.
profgubler··on The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden
That is sad, because you think a personal finance if taught right would be the most interesting class in school for students. I would think a teacher would only have tell a student, if you want to be rich this is the only class that matters.
profgubler··on Bill Gates's new website: The Gates Notes
But remember, Bill Gates started out as a hacker. He spent his whole high school days learning on a computer his Mom's Club purchased for their kids. He says he was probably one of 50 kids in the country that had that much access to a computer in his High School days.
profgubler··on Insurgents Hack U.S. Drones
This is a grave oversight, but often it isn't the military that needs convincing of the intelligence of the enemy it is the politicians. These politicians and often news pundits have often said things such as why are we spending so much money on this war when we are fighting people who use sticks and stones.

So it is a catch 22 when you have to cater to the politicians you are often enabling your enemy. Not that I think we shouldn't have government or politicians and internal opposition, it is just that I wish politicians would do less grand standing and more actual thinking.

profgubler··on Browser Size, from Google Labs
Wouldn't the most pertinent stats actually be your own stats from your own analytics?
profgubler··on Are Microsoft Users More Gullible When It Comes To Online Advertising?
That is interesting. But to determine whether a certain set of users is cheaper than another a better metric would be to determine the per visit value of a user. This would take into account that Safari or Chrome users might purchase larger quantities or higher value items, even though overall they might purchase less frequently.
profgubler··on Ask HN: Rate my site.
Quick recommendation on a way to make money, with this. If your site doesn't return a result for a book, why not query amazon or half.com and link to a listing on their site getting the potential affiliate fee.
profgubler··on Obama mandates FCC to support Network Neutrality
Not an Obama fan, but this is a great move. Good one Mr. President.
profgubler··on The well-deserved success of Mint, and what other businesses can learn from it.
crazy egg runs only $9 a month on the low end and is well work it, particularly if you are trying to see what users are clicking on.

If you have a process where you try to get users from one page to another, no matter if you want users to sign up or just continue reading, or click on your contact information Crazy Egg is invaluable. Often you will start to see how you are bleeding users, by distracting them from the goals you want for them, or they have for themselves.

It is keep and the have a money back guarantee. And I don't work for them I just use them a lot.

profgubler··on Memo to Start-ups: You’re Supposed to Be Changing the World, Remember?
Is it just me or is it sad that they seem to be blaming the entrepreneur's for not wowing the judges. TechCrunch was the gate keeper of the event, it is their responsibility to find the game changers.

Don't blame the entrepreneur's because you forgot to post in the guidelines, that your business must change the world or won't be accepted.

I have a hard time believing that people how are trying to change the world appear like that from the moment they launched.

profgubler··on The White House's Vision for High Speed Rail
This is exactly why there is a lot of opposition to high speed rail in the US. It primarily helps those who live inside major cities. When constituents feel like they are paying for something that they are not benefiting from they will oppose it.
profgubler··on 4Chan launches embarrassing attack on devout Christians on Facebook
Except you don't actually know that no harm was done. What if this person that this happened to was married (that is not a fun conversation to have even if it didn't happen), or because of what was posted they lost their job. You have no idea. I am sorry this isn't a joke it is vandalism.
profgubler··on Dean Kamen: Healthcare Debate "Backward Looking"
Marketing does not raise the cost of Healthcare and medicine, but those lawyers you mention sure do.
profgubler··on Dean Kamen: Healthcare Debate "Backward Looking"
I am sorry you answered the wrong question. This is why politics stink. He is right, everyone has access to healthcare in America. And you are right not everyone has insurance.

These are two different things.

profgubler··on For Many Americans, Nowhere to Go but Down
You are correct. Thank you.
profgubler··on For Many Americans, Nowhere to Go but Down
Before he lost his job they were middle class. He made $53,000 dollars a year in Northern Indiana. I make considerably less with a wife and kid with one on the way, in a more expensive part of Indiana. I don't even live pay check to pay check.

To say we are the middle class condemning the middle class is false. He was the middle class himself.

profgubler··on How A Pretty Face Can Push Visitors Away
I wouldn't call it laziness. It is often being frugal. You would be surprised at the number of large companies that use stock photos as well. I think you would also be surprised at the amount of stock photography that you have not idea is stock photography, because the designer either manipulated the image or the chose a good photo for the purpose of the page.

I think we are limiting ourselves here in how stock photography can be used.

profgubler··on Why Teens Aren’t Using Twitter: It Doesn’t Feel Safe
I think someone is reading their tweets. And it's their parents. That is why teens avoid it, it is way easy for their parents to know everything. With Facebook you don't need to share everything with your parents, and the world, even if your parents are your friends.

To me that has to be the main difference.

profgubler··on After Two Centuries, a Cryptologist Cracks a Presidential Code
It is like a real like National Treasure. I am impressed at the genius of hte individual who created the code and the individual who cracked it.
profgubler··on Google Lies: The Myth of Good Content
Only if it is initially promoted.
profgubler··on Sheds For Living: Small Practical Prefab Living Space
The large versions of these homes are a quarter of the size of that apartment. It is only like 258 square feet.
profgubler··on Sheds For Living: Small Practical Prefab Living Space
Is it me or are these things insanely expensive. Maybe if you live in the bay area this is cheap, but I live in Indiana and in some places you could by a house way bigger than one of these for the same price. And that includes the price of a 1/8 to 1/4 acre lot.

The other problem is where do you put it? I am not going to live in my parents back yard.

profgubler··on [dead]
Krugman is not to fault for the recession I agree. But he is still advocating the theory of creating a new bubble to keep us from the effects of a previous bubble. I would have more respect for him if he had a solution to reign in the bubble he said the US had to create to fight of the recession.
profgubler··on Upgrade & Billing Screen Design Walkthrough (Basecamp)
I think the biggest selling point on their final design is the simple call to action Get More Done. I have used basecamp in a limited fashion, but it seems that what really makes their final design stand out is the benefit that effectively state in their call to action.

They had several good designs that helped people understand what they would be getting by upgrading, but that call to action is, my guess, what will most likely help users to upgrade.

profgubler··on The Future of Email Marketing? Twitter.
I think people try and say this about Facebook, SMS, & Twitter. It is a new form of permission marketing. That is why companies spend so much time on their facebook page, and many do with twitter as well. They will not replace email marketing in the short term, but they reach a group of people that hate to give out their email, but aren't as afraid to follow or friend people.
profgubler··on Clixpy is recording your actions right now
I think the concept is similar to Clicktale and even simple User testing. But instead of asking users to perform tasks you get to watch real users using your site.

Something quantifiable is nice, but after watching a few of these videos of your users, you will quickly find some of the big problems your site faces. You likely won't notice the small ones, but you should be able to see some of the big ones, which are the ones that need your greatest attention anyway.

I also would like to see their price before giving them an email.

profgubler··on IPhone UI Stencil Kit
That is a novell idea. It is like balsamiq, but low tech. They should sell it to every ad agency. Because the one were I work, we continually get asked about making iPhone apps.

I hope they design one that is made for website ui as well.
