procinct··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
Not indefinite lock down, but tight border controls. There are only a couple of hundred active cases in NZ currently. We are looking at exiting from our stricter lockdown next week.
procinct··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
The disease is close to eradicated inside the borders of NZ. At this point there are only a couple of hundred active cases and we’ve now had a couple of days with 0 new cases. Australia seems to be on track for the same thing.
procinct··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
I don’t really understand how so. Countries that have handled it aggressively at least have the option to open borders and allow the virus to spread if they felt like that would for some reason put them in a better position. But this way they can hold off for a vaccine or effective treatment and have a far better outcome.
procinct··on Ask HN: What program are you most proud of making?
Just chiming in to say this looks really cool. Especially good for a personal laptop where you’re going to be using it for lots of different purposes.
procinct··on Show HN: Like Headspace, but free forever
I don’t really see how this is more of a direct advertisement than other Show HN posts and the service is free.
procinct··on New Zealand relied on science and empathy
New Zealand definitely benefited a lot from being a remote island nation but our response also got a lot of things right. For example, being quick to implement travel restrictions and eventually a closed border. The other example that stood out to me was that the country decided to go into its highest level of lockdown when the first cases of community transmission were detected (I believe when it was decided we had 2 cases of community transmission).

So I definitely agree that NZ benefited a lot by being more remote and having no land borders, but we are only doing so well because we didn’t underestimate the virus and took drastic action early.

procinct··on Why do we need Flask, Celery, and Redis? (2019)
I was more referring to how it knows once it’s finished since the task is asynchronous. So for the backend to find out, it could do the select you mentioned and find out it’s still in progress. Then it checks again next second and still in progress. Then checks again and it’s done. But now your backend has been polling for an update and so you might as well have performed the task in the application because it is still being used up for the duration of the task.
procinct··on Why do we need Flask, Celery, and Redis? (2019)
What I mean is that if your backend is polling for a task to finish, that is also taking away time from other users. For some tasks that won’t matter because the backend won’t need to be aware of the outcome of the task but there could be some longer jobs that the backend needs to be aware of the outcome right away. You could get it so the polling is done on the front end and then passes the outcome to the backend but that obviously isn’t a good idea because then the backend is trusting outcome data from the front end.
procinct··on Why do we need Flask, Celery, and Redis? (2019)
One aspect of this set up I’ve never been able to understand is how the application then gets the result from the worker? If it’s polling for status from the backend doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a worker to begin with? Or does this set up only work for tasks that don’t need to have the backend notified about the result so the front end can just poll for the result via the application?

Annotate is a valid git command though right?

procinct··on A Long Time Until the Economic New Normal
What country is that?
procinct··on Coronavirus is not a good argument for quitting cash
Can’t you type a passcode into your phone instead of having it scan your face?
procinct··on Chloroquine phosphate has shown apparent efficacy in treating Covid-19
How long would we expect it to take to find out if this is something that can widely be used to combat Covid-19?
procinct··on High Temperature and High Humidity Reduce the Transmission of Covid-19
Excuse my ignorance but would a colder temperature but with rain help prevent due to the high humidity or does it require heat AND humidity?
procinct··on Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures to the entire country
This sort of comment really isn’t appropriate for HN.
procinct··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
Victimless how? They had their package stolen.
procinct··on Apollo: An iOS Reddit app built for power and speed
You're right, it is just to paywall pro features. I was mistaken. Mixed it up with other Reddit clients.
procinct··on Apollo: An iOS Reddit app built for power and speed
I'm completely mistaken here, Apollo has no ads. One-time fee is for other features.
procinct··on Apollo: An iOS Reddit app built for power and speed
You're completely right, I was mistaken. Was thinking of other Reddit client's I've tried. It's been a long time since I purchased the full edition so my memory is a bit hazy. Sorry about that.
procinct··on Apollo: An iOS Reddit app built for power and speed
It shows it’s own ads, not Reddit’s. you can pay a one-time fee to remove them as well.
procinct··on Deploying front-end websites to S3 with CloudFront
Why would it not be static? It could be a static site making a request to an API to log in?
procinct··on Ask HN: Do You Miss IRC?
Until you turn your computer off I suppose. Could always set up a server running screen or tmux and ssh into it each time I suppose.
procinct··on Lockdown: Open-source firewall that blocks app tracking, ads, snooping
This is at the device level as opposed to network level of pihole.
procinct··on France fines Apple €25M for iOS software that slowed down older iPhones
I definitely don’t know as much about batteries as you clearly do but yes, the phone will return to normal clock speed after a battery change. It keeps being reported as “older phones” but it’s really more like older batteries.
procinct··on iOS 13 app tracking alert has dramatically cut location data flow to ad industry
Agreed. Camera upload to DropBox is one situation I've run into. Currently it seems like it's using some janky set up where each time I change location it triggers an event to look for new photos to upload but this results in Apple notifying me of DropBox looking up my location X amount of times in the last few days.
procinct··on What it's like to bootstrap a business before it can financially support you
I’m guessing he means provisioning servers.
procinct··on Paid Cerberus 'lifetime' licenses are expiring
I missed that. Why were they kicked off the play store?
procinct··on Brave Passes 10M Monthly Active Users, Sees 19% Growth Since 1.0 Launch
Am I missing something? Why is Brave considered anti gay?
procinct··on Authentication Vulnerabilities in OpenBSD
> this vulnerability is remotely exploitable in smtpd, ldapd, and radiusd, but its real-world impact should be studied on a case-by-case basis. For example, sshd is not exploitable thanks to its defense-in-depth mechanisms.

Does this mean OpenBSD will have to update the tagline on their website that says "Only two remote holes in the default install, in a heck of a long time!"?
