procinct··on Skip the exit interview when you leave your job
To try and find ways to prevent people from leaving in future. They are looking to improve retention.
procinct··on Apple Unveils M2
It would be nice if they could get close in terms of battery. Every windows laptop I’ve ever had including my current one I use for work has had a battery life of around 3 or 4 hours. Compared to my MacBook Air which can easily seem to go over 24.
procinct··on Ask HN: Does your org use a password keeper?
Not having to rotate shared passwords after an employee leaves I suppose?
procinct··on Exceptionally high quality deepfakes in Kendrick Lamar music video
If it helps with some of the faces you can also see his facial hair change
procinct··on Exceptionally high quality deepfakes in Kendrick Lamar music video
His face morphs through out the video. His body and hair stay the same
procinct··on It's 2022, phones should be built to last five years or more
The S7 still gets updates?
procinct··on More PCs Running Windows XP, 7, and 8 Than Windows 11
Pretty sure WSLg is also on Win 10 no?
procinct··on Ask HN: Python Programming Books
Personally a big fan of Fluent Python
procinct··on Downpour: A game making tool for phones
Same here! I had a basic game where an enemy moved across the screen towards the character and you had to shoot it. Clicking the enemy would hyperlink to a slide where you shoot the enemy, the enemies animation finishing (when it touches the character) would link to a slide where you died. Working out how to do conditional logic in PowerPoint at 11 opened up a lot of exciting ideas for PowerPoint games for me. Though it lead to a lot of slides…
procinct··on The Boschian Horror of ‘Elden Ring’
Definitely agree on easiest so far. The checkpoints are much more forgiving and summoning doesn’t take any resources. Also with the horse, you have a lot of escape options. With those QOL improvements alone it makes it a lot easier.
procinct··on Nova 9
Developers using a mac is probably a larger audience size than you are imagining.
procinct··on Nova 9
+1 for sublime merge. I used to purely use the terminal for git but had tried other GUI clients extensively like GitKraken. Sublime Merge is just on a completely different tier of software. It has no abstractions really over git itself (you can see the commands it executes) and it is fast as all hell. It was the first GUI client that I feel actually improved my git usage. Outstanding piece of software.
procinct··on Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown
Yes, they follow it up with a PCR
procinct··on .NET Myths Dispelled
I definitely don’t find modern .NET (ie .NET Core) to be overly enterprisy or boilerplated at all. Certainly nothing like .NET framework or Java.
procinct··on WhatsApp Privacy Policy update for people in the European Region
How so? Because it doesn’t have E2E encryption on by default?
procinct··on Google Search Is Dying
> Early adopters aren’t using Google anymore.

Can anyone share what they are using?

procinct··on I paid for a perpetual license of TeamViewer. Stop calling and emailing me
They aren’t the hard coded ones. These ones are dynamic ones. It only happens when listening to podcasts, never music. Fortunately you can skip them but it is annoying.

The reason you might not use pocket casts is because the podcast could be exclusive to Spotify for example.

procinct··on Primel – guess a 5 digit prime number – each guess must be a prime
I have the same problem with the cross words in my newspaper ;)
procinct··on The mystery of social behavior in octopuses
Octopuses are known to not live very long in captivity.
procinct··on Netflix’s Prices Are Rising Faster Than Cable
They definitely do not have ads (or in app purchases). Maybe you downloaded a non arcade game by mistake?
procinct··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
Different theme, Darcula is the one included by default in a lot of intellij IDEs.
procinct··on The magical miniature worlds of terrariums
Agreed, Tanner is amongst the best in the world when it comes to terrariums. The fact that he will often cut the glass himself for making the enclosure was seriously impressive to me when I first started watching.
procinct··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
This is a pretty uncharitable interpretation of my comment. I currently don’t even use Linux on desktop (though I have in the past). Like I said, Haiku is very cool, and I love the idea behind it and Serenity, but in terms of what is closer to a useable desktop, I think it is still a while off, and will always suffer from app support (if that isn’t as important to you as it is to me that’s fine).

I do agree though that all of the Linux distros that are aimed at being minimalist aren’t simple (e.g Arch).

Though there are some like Puppy Linux which I think have quite cool ideas around it.

Please refrain from projecting whatever ideas you have around “Linux desktop people” onto me.

procinct··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
I would imagine surely there’s a distro that is just as functional as what you’re imagining Haiku will be one day right? The main issue I find with Linux is app support but that would be worse again with Haiku. What sort of usability issues would you expect to run into with something like Mint? Btw not saying Haiku isn’t cool, it absolutely is. But I see it being a long way behind even the Linux desktop.
procinct··on Is the four-day workweek finally within our grasp?
It’s definitely not just a US thing. In NZ the vast majority of people work 5 days. I suspect probably the same in AU and UK.
procinct··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Maybe give people a place to post a small bio of themselves on some sort of virtual pin board so users looking for a pen pal like relationship can get in contact?
procinct··on Depression is more than low mood, it’s a change of consciousness
Wouldn’t it be more defined as “situational depression”?

procinct··on Scattered thoughts on why I waste my own time
I agree. I think part of it is I feel like I actually might miss out on learning something interesting/career improving if I stop reading HN whereas to me the other platforms are more pure entertainment. I find it’s generally harder to do something in moderation than to give up cold turkey and when you’re worried you might miss something important if you stop all together, cold turkey isn’t really an option.
procinct··on Inflation is wiping out wage increases for many workers
We have fixed and floating. But generally the absolute max you would fix for is 5 years. People commonly fix for 1 year.
procinct··on Inflation is wiping out wage increases for many workers
Holy shit that is insane. You’re right, that is indeed inflation proof. Is this the US?
