What's the fallacy about pitting your own citizens against foreign workers who must work for low wages and crap wages or face deportation? Jobs are a zero sum game. Don't forget - once you bring in a firehose of foreign workers, the ability for workers to collectively bargain is harmed. I have seen firsthand the drop in quality of life in enterprise software companies over the past decade due to the H1B system producing scores of yes-men, incapable of saying no to their superiors over fears of losing their job.
Any system with weighting/voting will inevitably become biased in some way or another. I would like to see a social network with only individual entities allowed (no companies, or organizations), verified accounts (but people can still choose to be anonymous on the frontend), with simple counter-spam features. People can be free to block people they don't want to hear.
Noble move but I hope this doesn't cause unintended consequences. If costs go up because alternative methods are more expensive, people will end up importing from countries that don't have these bans. Are these economic side-effects ever considered in these decisions?
Shadowbanning is a symptom, not the disease. The scale at which these large social networks run have so much power to influence our perception of the world. If any bias, let alone major lopsided political bias, is involved in judging who doesn't get a say in this modern "town square", then we are in big trouble. Not to mention gaming of this system via bots and bad faith state actors.
I'm betting on fake story for karma. Makes you think how many stories we hear on the internet are fake yet shape our perception of the world for many people who take things at face value.
To attract youth to a lowly paying government job, they need to appeal to emotion. Same way tech companies attracted college kids by telling them they were helping to "save the world".
He's trolling and lampooning people that are obsessed with blindly agreeing with the mainstream-sanctioned narratives (Covid, Ukraine). The book thing is probably a comment on censorship and historical revisionism that is occurring as part of the effort to prop up certain narratives. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten called a right-wing nationalist yet.
Has anyone seriously and honestly asked themselves why the US is so keen on pushing the LQBTQ agenda? Even if sincere, LGBTQ people are a very tiny percentage of the population so why go through such lengths to make large and sweeping systemic changes? It is totally distracting from much more serious issues. Very puzzling.
Well there is a geopolitical perspective to this as well right? Wouldn't want our biggest adversary to have strategic influence over these nations. Not to mention the potential intelligence capabilities from installing our equipment rather than theirs. Whether one country is more righteous than the other doesn't matter at this point - you should be rooting for the country that your survival depends on.
Most are willing to live life to the fullest with negligible risks. Others who want to live life locked down and living in a plastic bubble, feel free to do so. If you think Covid can be eradicated with zero-covid policies, look at how China is faring [1]. Live and let live.
This is how it should have been. I continue to say to this day, if things were really that bad, people would have tested/vaccinated/masked/locked down on their own volition. They would not have to have been mandated or compelled to do so. The moment the hard censorship and cancelling came out to any narrative contrary to the official one, it should have been obvious there was something fishy going on. Unfortunately, people were too wrapped up in fear/hatred to think rationally.
I think a lot of people just find the topic of conspiracy theories interesting and entertaining. You don't need to hate on them for what is essentially a hobby.
And yet the US seemingly does nothing about it. Makes you think whether the US government is turning a blind eye or they believe there the benefits outweigh the costs.
Eat clean (cut out sugars and starches), eat less, expend calories (through exercise). There are no shortcuts besides getting surgery. The more you embrace the pain of doing the above, the more successful you will become. That applies to all facets of life.
Because social media gave literal juveniles power in numbers whereas in real life their opinions would have been largely ignored. On social media, you don't know if you're talking to a high-schooler, a bot, or a state sponsored troll. Yet their opinion is essentially weighted the same as a PhD scholar.
If anyone is to blame for our troubles, it's you for trying to make this an us vs them issue. There are valid reasons for and against domestic oil production.
Your rationale makes sense in a paradise world where there are no wars and no countries vying for hegemony. There is an immense national security aspect and domestic economic situation you are ignoring which could not be anymore relevant today.
Agreed. If there's anything I've learned over the years, it's that Democrats and Republicans are equally nasty. The only difference is one side is much more powerful because they are supported by virtually every cultural institution that exists.
> HN has long been infiltrated by CCP-backed commenters
I suspect this is true to some degree but I also think there is no shortage of Chinese nationalists and anti-Americans (including Americans) who by default, upvote anything that has a pro-China agenda and downvote anything that has anti-China agenda.
