presentation··on Slow
The 2nd av subway is a bad example… that’s just a masterclass in political incompetence.
presentation··on I know when you're vibe coding
Is that a bad thing? What do we call this?
presentation··on I know when you're vibe coding
Unlike stack overflow, if it doesn’t know the answer it’ll just confidently spit out some nonsense and you might fall for it or waste a lot of time figuring out that it’s clueless.

You might get the same in Stack Overflow too, but more likely I’ve found either no response or, or someone pretty competent actually does come out of the woodworks.

presentation··on I know when you're vibe coding
The tech might get better eventually, it has gotten better rapidly to this point and everyone working on the models are aware of these problems. Strong incentive to figure something out.

Or maybe this is it. Who knows.

presentation··on I know when you're vibe coding
I find success basically limiting it to the literal coding but not the thinking - chop tasks down to specific, constrained changes; write detailed specs including what files should be changed, how I want it to write the code, specific examples of other places to emulate, and so on. Doesn’t have to be insanely granular but the more breadcrumbs the higher chance it’ll work, you find a balance. And whatever it produces, I git add -p one by one to make sure each chunk makes sense.

More work up front and some work after, but still saves time and brain power vs doing it all myself or letting it vibe out some garbage.

presentation··on I launched 17 side projects. Result? I'm rich in expired domains
I use Linear - it integrates with GitHub so that when PRs go in the status moves to shipped. I spec the linear tasks out, copy the generated git branch name and make a branch on my computer (auto moves to in progress status); copy paste the contents as markdown to Claude code, have it do its thing, then push up the code to a PR and review it/run CI. If alls good merge it in and then the status moves to shipped automatically.

Since otherwise this is a solo side project I don’t need anything more complex than that, though I also use Linear for my day job and so I know you can automate it more if you need to.

presentation··on I launched 17 side projects. Result? I'm rich in expired domains
I'm actually having some success now with the

> I buy a domain name → I set up a bug tracker → I spec out a bunch of tasks → I let Claude Code do the coding

Seems more sustainable to me than working a full-time job coding, then adding another coding side project. Nice change of pace to just be describing what I want my app to do (during my work day), then letting Claude Code buzz away while I do my day job.

presentation··on I launched 17 side projects. Result? I'm rich in expired domains
No, I think it's just that actually shipping projects is harder than one imagines it, and the glow wears off relatively quickly.
presentation··on How to Make Websites That Will Require Lots of Your Time and Energy
It’s also mostly applicable to those inexperienced at web development, who write 99% of the posts and comments along these lines.
presentation··on 4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program
It's good that the Fed can set monetary policy without pandering to whatever short-term goals politicians have at the time, as they've thoroughly proven their incapability to tackle long-term challenges like the deficit.

I also don't think that bailing out SVB is a sign that Dodd-Frank was just symbolic, since not doing so would have pretty significantly hurt the USA's tech sector, which is is strategic nationally for the economy.

But I can see an argument for limiting the Fed's purview to mostly be about monetary policy and less about enforcement of legislation, as it's done in other countries.

presentation··on Reverse engineering GitHub Actions cache to make it fast
I invested a few days at the start of building my B2B SaaS company wherein on every deploy we automate branching our actual staging/production databases with Neon, spinning up a complete preview environment with all the real dependencies, applying all migrations to the real data, and running end to end tests on that environment. Once it was set up I almost never need to touch it (and it's documented, but my engineers also don't need to touch it either).

In a few years of that setup being in place, while it's only partially attributable to this CI/CD process, we have never had a single incident—a stark contrast to the volatile on-call experiences I've had at past startups. For me, never being woken up in the night or needing to stress out while reverting deploys that broke our users needs was well worth it.

presentation··on DaisyUI: Tailwind CSS Components
Or use a better atomic CSS in JS tool like Panda CSS and just make a mixin however you want (or use their batteries included library if you don’t want to). It’s too bad Tailwind is so popular despite it being so bad at composition and unreadable.
presentation··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
I can also pull out numbers and statistics that make it sound like the US is more litigous than other nations, like how it spends way more than any country as a fraction of GDP on litigation [1] as well as how litigation is used frivolously to prevent projects by weaponizing environmental regulation like NEPA and CEQA, to prevent the construction of practically anything in the USA.

But all that aside, taking that Harvard law article at face value, there are specifically mishandled types of suits, and those include those that are intended to inflict cost on payments processors to get them to reject customers that otherwise aren't doing anything illegal, but just operate in an industry that those suing don't like.

presentation··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
The USA is extremely litigious, rules are decided not by the legislature usually but instead by people suing each other to establish case law, and anyone with a bone to pick could sink you in legal fees and proceedings at a whim. So probably people who don’t like the idea of adult content can use the courts to make payment processors’ lives painful and they decide to just forgo that business.

US courts are too easy to use as a tool of abuse.

Very edgy so cool
presentation··on The US dollar is on track for its worst year in modern history
The yen has other reasons to be weak though, namely that Japan barely increased interest rates as compared to the US.
presentation··on Grammarly acquires Superhuman
I’m using Shortwave and it’s nice! They’re also leaning into AI unfortunately but the core email experience is pretty good with nicer notification control and bundling features than Superhuman had.

presentation··on The magic of through running
What they mean is that you have many different train operators who run different portions on the track as independent lines, but seamlessly, without connections, your train will become another line’s train when you reach the border stations.

For example, let’s say you are going from Motomachi Chukagai to Kawagoe, try plugging this into Google Maps - you board the Minatomirai line, then once you reach Yokohama, without getting off your seat you are now on the Tokyu Toyoko line, then again at Shibuya it becomes the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin line, then again at Wakoshi it becomes the Tobu Tojo line.

4 different train operators maintained and run by 4 different companies with their own rolling stock and drivers, but they share access to the track and trains, they interoperate, and it just feels like one train with no dip in service quality. Many lines here do this.

presentation··on The magic of through running
Sure, but who do you know who actually built a functioning rocket launch company privately AND also built a leading EV company when it was unheard of?

I agree that he also has stupid, botched ideas, but pretending like he’s incompetent is just cope.

presentation··on The magic of through running
The goal is not to rely on one man, but regardless of what you think of him, he has proven to be very effective at bringing big ideas to reality.
presentation··on Working on databases from prison
I don't have evidence to say that it is irrelevant, but people love using homogeneity as a cope for being unwilling to try things to improve the status quo. Hate this argument.
presentation··on Cure Dolly's Japanese Grammar Lessons
Cure Dolly’s explanations of Japanese grammar are so much better than those of the textbooks and typical teaching that it blew my mind after already becoming conversant in Japanese to hear the concepts I had to struggle to figure out on my own explained so clearly.
presentation··on Show HN: Ikuyo a Travel Planning Web Application
Also I don’t want to plan out every second of my trips. Seems like this is useful for big trips with many people who need to be herded around, but in my estimation that kind of trip usually isn’t even that fun to begin with.
presentation··on Musk-Trump dispute includes threats to SpaceX contracts
No, I am an American and I think some things the republicans do are dumb and some things the democrats do are dumb. This tribalism is not helpful for actually sifting out what policies are sensible and what aren’t.
presentation··on AI Saved My Company from a 2-Year Litigation Nightmare
I also had an experience like this, where we found a great lawyer who basically explained to us the social dynamics of the particular arbitration court that the legal battle would be fought out in, and how if we can establish a paper trail that just made the guy suing us look like he was acting in bad faith, that it would be hard for that guy to make his case. Then our lawyer helped us craft emails without being emotionally involved like we were to socially engineer this outcome, and then came out with a nice settlement at the end once his lawyer convinced him that he was in trouble.

I think finding these people is a dark art, but they exist.

elevenlabs is pretty good for me - their app is simple to use for this. some occasional mispronunciations or weird pauses here and there though.

I have not had a ton of success getting good results out of LLMs but this feels like a UX problem. If there’s an effective way to frame a prompt why don’t we get a guided form instead of a single chat box input?
