prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
She didn’t have to agree to the contract. I don’t really want some arbitrary govt limit restricting what private parties can do with each other.

I dont think the severance value was disclosed. It could be $10M. She was a senior exec for years and hasnt had to work since leaving Facebook.

I mean even for small amounts like $100k, I’d likely sign non disparagement agreements. Early in my career I signed agreements for really low amounts as it was greater than zero and I needed the money.

I think that was more about trying, in a dumb way, to make the pregnant woman not work all night than sexual harassment.

The author was 8 months pregnant and was going to stay up for 12 hours doing stuff. This seemed more like a commanding boss trying to stop a workaholic from working.

“I only make $4M/ year in RSUs and am an attorney, however will I pay for daycare for my three kids and teacher husband. I better continue acting unethically and profiting from hosing people.”

This was such a weird argument. I think the author may actually be self-deluding herself as I can’t imagine her or her editors think anyone buys this argument.

I don’t think the book revealed anything new about FB’s bad deeds, though. Was there novel info?

I think its just more exposure for already bad things.

Had she had a trove of emails or something, I might thing differently.

This is quite different from the recent lawsuits that produced novel material and evidence.

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
How is it courageous? She’s profiting off her book. Seems pretty normal.
prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
Not really. Author could have whistleblown and quit early on revealing unsavory things.

The book is mainly attempts to embarass Zuck (eg, he’s sweaty, he’s not good at Catan, etc).

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
I think the author was complicit and only complained once FB stopped paying her.

It was weird how the author claimed not to know how facebook targeted ads worked until 2016/2017 after she had made millions.

prepend··on The Claude Code Source Leak: fake tools, frustration regexes, undercover mode
I agree with and appreciate your comment.

I’ll also note that I’ve worked with developers who didn't like git blame because someone might misinterpret the results. I think some people want excuses for poor work, rather than just working as correctly as possible.

prepend··on The Claude Code Source Leak: fake tools, frustration regexes, undercover mode
So don’t do that.

I’m not saying comments are magic or anything. It takes work to keep them in sync with the code.

It’s a useful goal. Not a rule that gets you out in jail if yo fail.

It doesn’t mean you can blindly trust comments. I treat all code, and comments, with skepticism until I can understand and run it.

It’s really just accepting that data privacy stinks than being a hermit.
prepend··on OkCupid gave 3M dating-app photos to facial recognition firm, FTC says
I live like I’m in the 2090s.

Banking is anxiety inducing, but other than that I’m probably better off. I don’t really send anything sensitive.

prepend··on OkCupid gave 3M dating-app photos to facial recognition firm, FTC says
I’ve never posted information anywhere off a machine that I control unless I’m comfortable with it being sold or made public.

Reduces anxiety.

Comments are great for developers. I like having as much design in the repo directly. If not in the code, then in a markdown in the repo.
prepend··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
Useful for letting us know that GP has a limited network and situational awareness.

I always find these “relative to me” claims not very informative on the internet. But it fun when every once in a while you notice the claimer is Bill Joy or Linus Torvalds or someone where the relativeness holds weight.

prepend··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
TOAD was fantastic for Oracle, though. I liked it better than SQL’s stuff.
prepend··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
I disagree as I was running clustered sql server 6.5 and 7 in 1998 for hundreds of concurrent users doing millions of reads per hour on NT basically commodity boxes. Replaced it with Oracle for 100x cost and lost performance.

I think even back then you were usually better off with distributed databases running mysql or postgres over Oracle. Although people liked to think a giant Oracle db was better.

prepend··on The sudden fall of Sora
Their video about “one day we’ll do something cool, totally, trust us” was so weird. Just in the philosophy if hype over substance in that it puts them in the group of bullshit companies vs the just do stuff and tell you about it when it’s ready.
prepend··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
Well, maybe.

The challenge is interpreting what is toxic, correctly.

Also, if everyone I know is “toxic” then that’s a good sign that the problem is me and not everyone else.

prepend··on Supreme Court Sides with Cox in Copyright Fight over Pirated Music
IANAL but my understanding it isn’t about consumption but about distribution and creating derived works. Viewing copyright material isnt illegal, distributing unlicensed copies is. EG, I can loan you a book I bought, or I can loan you a book I stole and you aren’t doing anything illegal in either case.

Stealing bread doesnt matter because stealing physical things deprives the owner of their thing. IP infringement isn’t theft in the legal or moral aspect.

prepend··on Drone attack on parked U.S. Army BlackHawk in Iraq
I don’t think so as shotgun shells are cheaper and smaller than drones.

When drones become cheaper then it’s a problem.

prepend··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
She did write about how she decided to stay because of the money.

Her book doesn’t cover the amount and I couldn’t find anything public where she discloses.

I figured it was a lot based on standard FB salary+stock and the years she was there.

prepend··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
I don’t buy that.

- She was not trying to change things. She was working to get countries ingratiated with FB execs

- She didn’t get pregnant until years into her work. She chose to have a second child while staying employed. She was already “rich” with millions likely earned when her first child was born and could have worked anywhere (but not making what FB paid). Wasn’t she an attorney? Prestigious attorney salaries are definitely enough to support children and a spouse who is a teacher.

prepend··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
I expect state governments to follow up.

The similar case about child predators was brought by NM’s attorney general.

prepend··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
Havent all electronics dropped in price?

Computers are cheaper. Phones are sort of cheaper. Headphones are cheaper.

Game systems cost more.

2041: a $30k neural interface that forces a user to watch a 15s ad every 30 minutes replaces previous version.

Every year after: interval decreases by a minute between ads

prepend··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
I bought a 60 inch Spectre tv from walmart and it works great as over the air and receiving video from my appletv.

I just googled “dumb tv” and that brand showed up.

prepend··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
I find roku really ad heavy and it sent tons of traffic back to roku.com. Same for firetv.
prepend··on Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features
This actually seems better than before when a vizio account was required. At least now its a walmart account. If forced to choose, Id prefer a walmart account.

Of course, I would never buy this tv because of the requirement. I just buy dumb tvs and then stick an apple tv in front if the hdmi input.

prepend··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
I think this is going to end up with a huge chunk paid out to state health departments for the foreseeable future.

Kind of like how tobacco companies now pay out billions every year and its a major source of funding for states.

Hopefully this means more health services available. But it will just serve like an ongoing tax.
