prepend··on US National Debt Surpasses GDP
But the other countries are also becoming more like the other countries, more quickly.

Thus the US gets worse but less worse than alternatives. So US returns continue to grow.

prepend··on US National Debt Surpasses GDP
One thing my economics professor taught me is that it’s about relative position across alternatives.

The reason the US continues to grow and thrive despite insane debt is that other countries are worse. Try investing $100B in other markets stably. Now do that 100 times and the chaos of the US is preferred due to the massive debt of other countries, corruption, etc

prepend··on Meta in row after workers who saw smart glasses users having sex lose jobs
How is a GoPro better than wearing these glasses while cycling?

How else do you want companies to remove and prevent CSAM? It seems like you must have some human involvement to train and monitor.

It’s a terrible job, I wouldn’t want to do it, but someone needs to. Perhaps one day, AI will be accurate enough to not need it, but even then you need someone to process complaints and waivers (like someone’s home photos being inaccurately flagged).

prepend··on Meta in row after workers who saw smart glasses users having sex lose jobs
Is it illegal or immoral? Having Meta review this material has to be approved by users and has their consent.

There was an example in the article where a user’s glasses kept recording the user’s wife after he took them off. That’s bad but on the user, not Facebook.

Seems similar to a situation where someone takes nudes of someone without their consent and then sends them off to a lab to be printed. The lab isn’t doing anything illegal or unethical printing them when they ask the user “are these legal” and the user replies “yes.” Unless you want to stop photo printers from ever printing nudes, I think the responsibility is on the user, not the firm.

I think Meta, like all companies, doesn’t want its subcontractors creating bad press for them.

So it doesn’t surprise me that Meta didnt renew/cancelled a contract that is a net negative for them. Arguing over the reason seems fruitless as no reason is needed per the terms of the contract (I assume since breach of contract wasn’t brought up by the sub).

The person who makes the ball bearing in the ambulance is also super important. They are paid leas because more people can do it.

The reason why EMT have such hiring practices are because many people can do the job, and there are many willing to do it.

It’s not weird if you think of in market terms.

prepend··on Failed Companies Are Selling Old Slack Chats and Email Archives to Train AI
How are these worth $100k?

I assume non-failed companies are selling as well. And I guess there’s lots of irc scraping going on.

Sadly, SSGs can’t make money. Nor should they, because they are simple and sort of the whole point is to be simple and not require complicated resources to build or host.

I wish them the best.

prepend··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
Why not just ask your agent to check in before every change? And then squish before you push or share. Works great for me and easier than convincing coworker to switch off git.
prepend··on Several Mac mini and Mac Studio configs are now out of stock at Apple
This has been the case since early March, right? I bought a base mini on march 3rd and it took 4 weeks to arrive. My friend tried to buy one last week and had a may delivery date.

It would be interesting to see if this is getting worse or better.

Because the trial may take 5 years and consume lots of resources.

If they’ll be pardoned anyway, why?

prepend··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
Do you not use git branches? Your use case was why git was made.
prepend··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
I thought git didn’t allow companies to use git in their name any more and grandfathered in girhub, gitlab, etc. How did this company get a trademark.

Also, I don’t think I would use this and the problems they describe aren’t really things I care much about.

I wish them the best, but $17m on a devtools company that thinks they are replacing git is going to be rough going.

I read the anarchist cookbook 40 years ago that had similar info.

I think the info has been available for many years and the thing stopping terrorists wasn’t info.

Good luck on being on the list of people using chatgpt and claude to make neurotoxins ;)

I assume anthropic and ooenai are selling prompt logs to the fbi and other countries’ law enforcement for data mining.

prepend··on Book review: There Is No Antimemetics Division
I bought it a few years ago before the new book deal and the name is Marion Wheeler.

I believe it was self published back then. Although it’s a beautiful hard cover that was only like $14 on amazon. I found it funny that it’s one of my favorite recent hardcovers and is cheaper and self published.

Check out the screen time log for fresh parents.

I remember the first few months being so crazy. Feedings every two hours, and each feeding took an hour.

But still time for naps, short walks, etc. part of the survival was to work in little microbreaks when the baby was sleeping.

It’s both. There was only one bed on the plane.

Were it me, I would give up my spot as it’s just weird to ask a coworker to sleep in the same bed.

Or, hopefully, not signing such agreements and accepting such payments.

Disclosing illegal activities cannot be silenced by these agreements.

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
Right. But it’s still law. Civil law.
prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
I read the book. Lots of unethical stuff, not so much illegal. There’s no revelation or new info publicly released. If it was illegal, I’d expect prosecution in the past 10 years.

Lots of things I’d like to be illegal. Or I wished were illegal.

What did you read that was illegal?

In this case the author is an attorney, so can presumably understand a contract she signed.

And the non-disparagement wasnt in her hire agreement, it was in her severance agreement, in exchange for a negotiated amount of money. Author was wealthy enough to afford dedicated lawyers to review.

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
In the US, a contract can’t supersede laws like those that protect whistleblowers. (I think this is part of how Harvey Weinstein was prosecuted because his NDAs were found invalid)

The author didnt disclose any illegal activities in her book. And she didnt claim whistleblower status.

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
In the US, a contract is considered law. It’s just only between the parties.
prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
I mean it is currently legal in most countries to do that.

Read about record contracts. Prince spoke extensively about his restrictive contracts.

prepend··on Author of "Careless People" banned from saying anything negative about Meta
She was privileged to even get a severance. Most people just get fired.
