pound··on Belarus’s Soviet Economy
your original comment was that it wasn't russia that was bad for Belarus historically but those europeans..

and I'm not your man

pound··on Belarus’s Soviet Economy
russia is indeed big so I will not make broad generalizations, but I've never met any russians who would claim vikings, byzantines or mongols as someone russia has originated from (for many mongols is a conflictive/sensitive topic though, but not in an acceptive way). I'm looking at dominating there slavic 'Rus' history view.
pound··on Belarus’s Soviet Economy
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarus and 'Establishment history' there. 1795-1918 - 123 years.

"Soviets" was a union of 15 republics, not one big russia.

To your original comment: russia absolutely didn't behave nice on that land at any time in history regardless of who they were at war with.

pound··on Belarus’s Soviet Economy
It was only temporary part of russian empire (for about a century), with every attempt to fight it drowned in blood. During that time russia tried to exterminate any self-identity, forbidding to even have a name and calling it "north-western area". To get an idea of what was happening in that region historically you may read about Great Duchy of Lithuania

Another point to consider: much of the Rus (Ruth) that russia claims to be descendent of is modern Ukraine and Belarus lands, and historically they were figthing most of the time with moscow armies.

pound··on How California Became America’s Housing Market Nightmare
non-primary residences as well as commercial properties are also covered by it. It's about wealth, not about keeping someone in their home.
pound··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
I'd clarify that regular outlet is _usually_ 15A. 12A is what car will be drawing as this is continuous load (should be 80%, code requirements). Quite often breaker behind that 120V outlet is 20A one.
pound··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
And you're right with not maxing out the range daily - it's bad for the battery. Something like 30/40% to 70/80% SoC range is the best
pound··on German government expands subsidies for electric cars
it adds about 5 miles per hour for model 3. So after charging overnight it would be at least 50 miles of range added. And this is enough for many.
pound··on Hacker’s Manifesto (1986)
that's not a hacker but also an agent.

and a bit of trivia - person who plays him is Marc Anthony (musician, ex-husband of Jennifer Lopez)

pound··on Hacker’s Manifesto (1986)
Oh, I see. That line was used in the movie posters at the time. Yep, true - it was based on manifesto :)
pound··on Hacker’s Manifesto (1986)
I wouldn't say 'lifted'. They were straight reading manifesto itself, not pretending that it's something else.

pound··on California Is in Big Trouble Again, After Averting a Collapse in the 2000s
Many residents are opposing any new construction, fearing that this would lower their properties values (or even will just slow down growth). It's quite nice setup when you own very expensive property and don't have to pay much in taxes to own it (and that property gets more and more expensive without much hustle on your side)
pound··on People are reporting collisions with Tesla’s Smart Summon feature
>> In the second case it ignored right of way

This is exactly the thing that people should !not expect! from it in the very beginning. It's an owner's responsibility to _monitor surroundings_ and make car move when it's safe to do so. Car will navigate, but it's not a full self driving obeying all the rules of city traffic.

pound··on Trolls Are Swarming Young Climate Activists Online
On the other hand - that kid will draw more general public's attention than even the most famous and accredited scientists. Just reality we're living in - unless it's a public show it will be ignored, no matter how serious issues are.
pound··on Air Travel Emissions Vastly Outpace Predictions
Unfortunately public transit contradicts that "they can own and control" part above.

For many in US just the idea of sharing a space with strangers is revolting. Same applies to dense living.

And that brings another question: how would you have effective public transit system in suburban sprawl?

How does it work out when your mom lives 5 hours driving distance from that place where your good job is?

How does it work out when your mom is renting herself and when you went to university she started renting a smaller place without extra room, to save some money?

rent vs own comparison may look a little different when you actually need a place to live

pound··on We moved to Turkey from San Francisco to continue working on our startup
There is an issue with SF report (idk about LA one)

1) It was self-reported

2) "Lived in SF" in report meant they were SF residents and this is requires just any bill with city address within 30 days (consider cases like: moved to SF with hopes of better opportunities, out on the streets in couple of months - but sf resident for a short term prior).

pound··on San Francisco Considers Ban on Government's Use of Facial Recognition Technology
because we, as progressive city, shouldn't hurt criminal's feelings, they are people too. Also what's with this gestapo idea of telling other people what they cannot do at their wish in public? /s

Sarcasm aside - only that much can be done by the police if there is no point in doing it. Let's not forget about DA office with revolving door, making sure anyone apprehended will be released and at the same place tomorrow without any consequences to their actions.

pound··on Pixel 3a
https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/google/pixel_visual_core It would be interesting to compare photo/video performance between 3 and 3a (slower GPU, slower CPU, no dedicated Visual Core). Saying 'it has the same camera' in this case essentially means only the same lens and software.
pound··on Pixel 3a
Screen is bigger on 3a (vs 3). Also there is no Visual Core on 3a.

re 'answering work emails until midnight: REALLY BAD' - true for any screen time. Night shift/f.lux or glasses with a blue light filter may help a little with that

Here is video from serpentza/cmilk (2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcyYyyaPz84 talking a bit about it.

Basically this is investment, with money often coming from the whole family. No one really lives there. In majority of cases even finishing touches on properties would be unwelcome as it will lower resale value. They are being built everywhere (helps with GDP too). And plenty of developers are struggling with sales of new stock.
