pototo666··on We Still Don’t Get Things Done
This!

I launch my MVP last month. I can't agree more with you.

1. Tech debts. The coder inside my just to write better code. And writing better code is satisfying.

2. After launch, I become more of a marketer than an engineer. Being a marketer is less enjoyable than being an engineer. I secretly know this before launch.

3. Alternative for income. Yes, I have another side project, whose users calling for more features. I can't help spending time on that project.

Thanks so much for clarifying this.

edit: what truly prompt me to launch is the death of my mom, which reminded me I have waited too long to do important things.

pototo666··on The dark side of entrepreneurship
This.

I failed my first startup. Then I worked for a year. Quit. Now I am poor and working on my second startup. Never want to go back.

pototo666··on The dark side of entrepreneurship
Yes it is easier.

Some setbacks may hurt my confidence in my first startup journey. Now I would just drink a cup of coffee and keep working.

pototo666··on The dark side of entrepreneurship
I used to be one of them. I got money, but failed. The process and failure took me hard, both mentally and bodily.

Before my startup, I read a lot about startup. I knew that it would be hard. But knowing is so different from experiencing.

On hindsight, all the stories have successful ending, or the author of the book are successful. Among all the hardship described in the book, the overall tone is optimism.

We should read more about failure, than success.

Now I am on my second startup journey, fulling understand what is awaiting me.

My mother just passed away. This quote touches my deepest feeling.
pototo666··on An impersonator issued a fake Reddit take down notice against SaveVideo
Interesting point, I am making a reddit clone in China. My MVP would like the very first verion of Reddit: only link sharing, no self-post or comment.

Fundamentally Reddit is not a link aggregator but a content aggregator. Link is one way to reach those contents. It is simple and scalable. But content consumers would always prefer first party content, ceteris paribus. One link away is one MORE step away. Faster solution always wins.

pototo666··on How to get rich without being lucky (2019)
> permissionless and limitless leverage

Yes, this one is extremely actionable.

pototo666··on How to get rich without being lucky (2019)
He actually talks about four kinds of luck. Have you read it?
pototo666··on How to get rich without being lucky (2019)
> You Won’t Get Rich Renting Out Your Time

> Live Below Your Means for Freedom

> Learn to Sell, Learn to Build

Personally I like these three pieces.

HN users are good at picking something they don't agree and agure against it. It's fine. But how about discuss what you believe is intereting and useful?

pototo666··on Should I Stop Trying?
Michael Seibel said something like this: if you success, you would be like the top 1 percent among your peers. You should be cautious about asking average people's opinion about your startup, because average means failure in startup world.

You know more than anyone about your business. You have all the qualitative and quantitative data about your business. If you need some random HN users, most of which are not successful founders, to tell you whether you should quit or go on, there is something wrong.

As a founder myself, I can relate to your feeling. My last startup failed. I saw no hope in what we did. I gave up. There is nothing bad about giving up, if you are sure about it.

pototo666··on Show HN: I wrote my own RTS game engine in C
Great great job! This project reminds me why I could never become an independent developer. Luckily I give up on becoming one 2 months ago.
pototo666··on Ask HN: Mobile phone addiction help?
My dumb method: Physical separation.

I live in my parents home, which is at third floor. I work at their garage, which is not a garage for car, but for bikes. It is at first floor.

When I work, I put my phones at home. When I need to sleep, I put my phones at garage.

pototo666··on Market is the most important factor in a startup's success or failure (2007)
My two cents.

The first time I read this post was two years ago. I was working a problem: how to practice Japanese. I had users and revenue, but no growth. Simple maths told me my product would never grow as a startup, and I had no way out of the niche. This post helped me confirm my worry: my market is too small.

What I learned: add a filter to the problem I want to solve. Is the problem big, or is it going to be big? This is expecially important when I am working on something I am passionate about. There is confirmation bias and wishful thinking when it comes to what I love.

Now I am working on a problem I care about, and the problem is big.

This post expresses an idea that I can easily relate to, given my experience. In this sense, it is useful.

pototo666··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
This is another big if true thing. It could lead to a potential dominating OS.

I would invest 1/10 of my annual savings into it, if possible. Are there any product for me to do that?

pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
> Separate work time and leisure time, otherwise as a solo dev you feel guilty for not working all the time, which makes it harder to start work.

This is exactly what I feel. Thanks for clarifying this for me :)

pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
Elegant and insightful model. Many comments here follow this model. Thanks :)
pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
Thanks, I am saving this quote to motivate myself :)
pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
> Tie your social status into it.

Good advice, thanks :).

pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
> Do a bit, don't get down on yourself if you only do a bit. It's better than nothing.

This mindset is valuable, thanks :)

pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
In a world with too many safe nets, deliver negative results as a service might actually be useful :)
pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
This makes a lot of sense, thanks :)
pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
I have never thought about eating habits' effect on motivation. Any resource I can read to educate myself?
pototo666··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
Thanks, the list advice is promising. I used to have list in my side project, mostly to help me remember what to do. I stopped having them when I becoem full-time, believing that I know what to do, which is only half true. I shall log in my trello again. :)
pototo666··on The NoPhone
I am thinking of buying a old stupid phone, guess it will make me more productive.
pototo666··on My experience releasing failed SaaS products
My first product takes 6 monthes to monetize. On hind sight I could have shortened 6 monthes to 4 monthes. Because users donated money from monthes 3 to support me. I postponed monetization for fear of user churn.

I would argue that it is possible, even necessary to try monetize early (but only after users acutually use the product). Maybe charge some small amount. PG may have written about it, I am not sure which essay.

pototo666··on My experience releasing failed SaaS products
What a great reading.

I am in my 4th mounth as a bootstrapper. You experience is giving me a lot of thoughts.

pototo666··on Let there be more biographies of failures
I think of this topic this very morning.

I am entering the fourth month of second entrepreneurial attemp. It feels harder than my last attemp, which failed. I have no funding (yet) and I have a child now. I can't keep 8 hours straight sleep.

Will my body cracks? I interviewed my mom this morning, who failed her several attempts in business and got lupus erythematosus.

She said that she never felt tired at that time. She just worked and worked. She used to be called the Never Tired Woman. But her businesse just didn't work. Then one day, she felt so tired. It turned out that she had this problem called lupus erythematosus. Then she gave up her career as entrepreneur. That was fifteen years ago, when she was in her fourth year as businesswoman rather than clerk.

I heard successful entrepreneurs adviced us to work as hard as you can. But what does that acutally mean? Should I work so hard as to hurt my health? My mom's story tells me, health is the prerequisite for entrepreneurship. As for working hard, there is bottom line there.

pototo666··on Twin sisters worth millions thanks to female gamers
Huniepop is actually good game. My wallet is wating for another game that surpasses Huniepop. I don't buy Huniepop 2 because I don't like the art style.
pototo666··on Godot maintainer removes controversial satirical piece from documentation
The satirical piece is actually well written. I can't help appreciate it even if i used to make money just the way it criticised.
pototo666··on The worst of the two worlds: Excel meets Outlook
Like many incumbent thing with network effect in the world, excel is both terrible and useful. But that is the beauty of software industry. You don't have to be perfect to win. You need to be faster, better and cheaper than current solution. For the moment, the faster and better solution than Excel might not be cheaper. So we are stuck with Excel, until someday someone really comes up with a faster, better and cheaper solution.
