potench··on A Brief Totally Accurate History of Programming Languages
I feel like left-pad should be called out in this article:

March 2016: Azer Koçulu breaks web deployments worldwide by unpublishing an 11 line module "left-pad" used for string expansion. yarn.cache was invented as a result.

potench··on Disney acquires own streaming facilities, will pull Netflix content
I believe the big win here is that ESPN currently pays a lot of money for broadcast rights of various major league and college sports; those same leagues are paying BAMTech for end-to-end digital "over-the-top" streaming services. Pretty sure this is a sweet reversal on Disney/ESPN's part to own their digital asset management and content delivery systems and even sell them back to sports leagues.

potench··on Loopy: a tool for thinking in systems
This is awesome. I did a quick demo system to map Performance and UX to App Experience http://bit.ly/2nVWbNE My demo isn't great but this Loopy tool already has me thinking about the problem in a different way and attempting to map positive/negative inputs to a result in an interactive and shareable way.

potench··on Why I Don't Use React Router
Thanks for sharing this and introducing me to 750words, I just finished my first entry! The analysis provided after just a single writing session is awesome - I can't wait to see how this affects my writing, focus, and ability to communicate with myself and others. Did you see a shift in sentiment, focus or elsewhere in your analysis as you prepared to make your writings public? For instance, I notice a pretty even distribution of Emotion and Mindset which I imagine will become way more focused as I work towards writing in public.
potench··on Forgo JavaScript packaging? Not so fast
Reading this article didn't inspire much hope for a bundle-free JS environment - but if you want to play around with one, we've been working on such an environment that provides 2 applications: 1. A Koa + HTTP2 static asset (primarily JavaScript) server 2. A rendering application that loads a route-based JavaScript dependency tree using JSPM + react-router in order to isomorphically render a web-page.

potench··on Chromecast + NFC
The sender and receiver SDKs have mature APIs for playing video. The session and media channels/objects are well documented and leveraging them on your custom receiver ensures far easier integration on the senders (iOS, android, and web). If you venture out of the cast-a-single-video experience, it can get pretty complicated as there are best practices for how to handle multiple senders, how to fetch a playlist and continue autonomously if the sender disconnects without stopping the cast, and maintaining a good user experience on all senders that represents current state of receiver. You could (and would be advised to) handle all this via the provided "media" channel.

More to the point of the article, there is also a custom messaging channel, you can create your own interactive experience (the receiver is just a website displayed in a chrome tab). Here's an example of tic-tac-toe: https://github.com/googlecast/Cast-TicTacToe-chrome. You can already develop a custom receiver for an in-store search feature or something more interactive and playful. You can connect to it via the same wifi. I don't understand what additional value nfc provides in this case as you'd still need to maintain an open/persistent connection to the receiver from the sender, would nfc be able to provide that?

potench··on Moments, the best of Twitter in an instant
The "moments" tab on web and iOS is really engaging and pretty easy to peruse trending/relevant news by category. I like that this was released as part of the existing Twitter app and not a standalone product.
potench··on Guess Who Doesn’t Fit in at Work
Perhaps calling it "culture fit" is the problem - it's not specific enough. Define more clearly the characteristics and signals you're looking for. Evaluate your team and culture to better identify the characteristics you're trying to match in a candidate. For instance, instead of "culture fit", say you are looking for signals that someone is "passionate about web development", then think about evidence that supports the characteristic: eagerly learning, involvement with development-community, excited about new technology, willing to experiment, etc. You can also provide evidence that shows a candidate isn't "passionate". Just a matter of semantics.

potench··on Konami just accidentally made P.T. the coolest game of all time
Wow, I noticed the other day that Konami delisted themselves voluntarily from the NYSE: http://www.polygon.com/2015/4/27/8503893/konami-delists-itse... I imagine they did this before breaking the Silent Hills news seeing as that might have a negative impact on their valuation.
potench··on Using Slack for #engineering-team-group-therapy
You can see your company's Slack stats here https://[your-company].slack.com/admin/stats For example at work we noticed a high number of DMs (> 80%) and we're trying different things to bring that number down to promote more transparency, collaboration, and opportunity to impact decisions across the team.

Department-channels (#backend, #web, #ios) can get pretty chaotic with multiple threads getting discussed concurrently. I can see how a topic-channel (#android-release-process) would help you swarm more efficiently. But, making it private and inviting only those you think should be there seems counter to the goal of transparency and "swarming". Maybe you could originate these topic-channels from a general channel with "@group, we're swarming on #android-release-process" and make it public.

potench··on The Best and Worst Places to Grow Up in the U.S.
This is a very cool interactive article. You land on its best guess for the county you are in (easy, sure) but you don't realize that until you've read through what feels like a "local news" article detailing the average income opportunities and discrepancies in the county and surrounding areas. The focus is on each county instead of the typical approach to these executions which is to provide big filtering options and a heat map and tabular data.
potench··on The Devops Job
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2013/06/11/front-end-ops/ Great front-end ops discussion, though I'd add that instead of a single "front-end ops" title, the responsibility should be held by every individual on the team to contribute to and leverage the dev-ops tools, process, and strategy.

potench··on React v0.13.0 Beta 1
Looks like they removed autobinding. When I first saw React, I thought about new JS developers maybe being led astray by React's magic handling of "this" scope. So I'm glad they removed the magic. But, doesn't this break backwards compatibility? Or does "createClass" keep autobinding while the new class model loses it?

potench··on Hyphen Hate? When Amazon went to war against punctuation
I wonder if Amazon's automated system would flag something like "Riddley Walker" where, in the future, words have changed meaning and are spelled phonetically. (1) Maybe Amazon could have an editors community similar to Stackoverflow where they can influence and override the automated curating system.
