possiblelion··on Hardware microphone disconnect (2021)
Holy crap, same! I had the issue on my M1 MBP and now am having the same issue with my M2 MBA. Please anyone help if they know how to fix it.
possiblelion··on Egypt: Corridor in Great Pyramid of Giza seen for first time
You might want to check out GScan - https://gscan.eu/ who are commercialising muon tomography for wider uses. Be that for tax&customs, border patrol or analysing building constructions.
possiblelion··on Automated data analysis for the prevention of criminal acts is unconstitutional
I think it's crazy that people are considering "linking previously unconnected automated databases and data sources in analysis platforms and permitting systematic access of data across sources through searches." as something like Minority Report.

The truth is that Law Enforcement investigations are currently taking information from dozens of silos/databases, manually copy&pasting them into Excel and Word and then finally making a pdf or powerpoint to share the results. This is obviously a really inefficient way to do things and wastes a lot of taxpayer money.

A technical solution that would allow LE to crosslink data they already have is a no-brainer.

P.S: Very biased view, as I'm building/selling exactly this tool :)

possiblelion··on Is Twitter down / read-only for everyone else?
Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are down as well.
possiblelion··on Cargo airships could be big
Hey, do you have some way to contact yourself? I'm from a "backwater" of Europe myself and would love to hear more about your project.
possiblelion··on There has never been a better time to be short
Was convinced this was going to talk about short-selling stocks and already head thought up an instinctive counterargument based on the title.
possiblelion··on Video games made in the USSR (2020)
It's not very relevant to tell people of Ukraine what they should be thinking or identifying as. Even the very first narodniks of the Russian Empire realized the big cultural differences between Ukrainians and Russians. Estonians and Finns are very similar in ways regarding culture and language, yet distinctly different as well. You wouldn't deny Estonia's existence and relegate it to some mistake made by Trotsky in 1918 when he failed to conquer the nation.
possiblelion··on ChatGPT restrictions on immoral content can be bypassed by gaslighting the AI
The new GPT-3 chatbot can be gaslighted into giving answers to immoral questions by convincing it to be in "Filter Improvement Mode"
possiblelion··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
How many users (women) were actually real?
possiblelion··on Despite conflict Russia sends France giant magnet for nuclear fusion project
I'm glad to see that the tokamak project isn't coming to a standstill over the conflict.
possiblelion··on NASA finds super-emitters of methane
So - looking at this it seems Turkmenistan [a repressive, North Korea style dictatorship] is destroying our climate system at an order of magnitude faster than anyone else. I'm well aware of the legacy that Iraq/Afghanistan have left in terms of international interventions into other countries; but if it is our common future on the balance, shouldn't we do something? Something more than just politely asking to stop?
possiblelion··on “Superstar” wines and the uncertain price premium across quality grades (2021)
This is a really cool paper!
possiblelion··on Estonia passes bill allowing digital marriage and divorce
At today's session, the Riigikogu adopted a law introducing electronic administration in marriage and divorce proceedings. From now on, it is not necessary to go to the civil registry office to submit a marriage and divorce application, but the application can also be submitted via a secure online environment. Also, a marriage and divorce application confirmed with a digital signature can be submitted to a notary online.
possiblelion··on Pay attention to deviations from mainstream incentives
Very cool piece, one of the most interesting I've read on HN recently. As someone building their first starup in a completely different category (fintech for Africa), many of the high-tier lessons about SOPs still made me think.
possiblelion··on AI-Generated Bible Art
Dalle generated images from specific Bible quote prompts. This website (openbible) is really fascinating overall, I recommend checking out their different sections.
possiblelion··on The unsolved mystery attack on internet cables in Paris
This is a option that shouldn't be discounted. Listened to the excellent Popular Front podcast on CLODO (https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-anti-tech-militant...). These were very sophisticated, probably computer scientists themselves who were horrified at how the tech would be used and sabotaged a lot of the infrastructure. Seemingly just to make a point in the history books that the way things went was not without resistance.
possiblelion··on Bitpanda said no mass layoffs, three weeks before axing one-third of staff
Sad, Bitpanda is one of the best in Europe.
possiblelion··on Ubuntu Unity desktop back from the dead after several years' hiatus
Damn, what kid! To be fair - having time and access to computer between the ages of 9-15 is something that I have come to appreciate in my life as well. Even if I didn't understand everything at the time, playing with open-source software, Linux, jailbreaking iDevices etc has definitely formed who I am today.
possiblelion··on Craiyon, formerly DALL-E mini
using the first name was a mistake in opinion, although we can't be too harsh on them, as they probably didn't anticipate this level of popularity
possiblelion··on A conflict with a manager ended with me being disallowed to work at Spotify
Unfortunately even with great companies where the "floor" of technical ability/intelligence/whatever is of course higher than the general population; there exists the same percentage ratio of competent people to non-competent people. A somewhat non-competent manager is actually fine in my experience, if they trust their team to know more about technical topics and try to stay pleasant.

This case obviously wasn't one and I'm sad to hear it. However, as a young and aspiring start-up founder, these stories are a great help and inspiration on how to structure my own company to avoid, or rather, minimise such clashes. Thanks for sharing!

possiblelion··on Estonia clocks fastest inflation in the Eurozone at 20.1 percent
Caused to some extent by energy prices, but also worth noting the "most-startups-per-capita" effect
possiblelion··on Found an old email: Justin TV's 2007 initial interview questions still online
Wow! Justin TV, that's a blast from the past.
possiblelion··on Stripe App Marketplace
Somewhat unrelated, but I've found it really difficult to stop a recurring payment with Stripe. A company which has shut (website down and email unresponsive) keeps trying to charge 299 bucks on my card via stripe. No way to stop it either, if the client website is down.

Ripe for failed founders to exploit

possiblelion··on Rocket Mortgage to trim 8% of workforce as home-loan market shrinks
I just wanted to say that I agree 100% with your worldview. It's hard to explain it here often. Maybe it's a Protestant thing? From Estonia here.
possiblelion··on The candy stores of Oxford Street
I studied in London for two years out of by three year BA program (2018-2020), and due to COVID had to move back to Estonia to complete the last year remotely. Recently I visited London again to catch up with old friends and was really bamboozled by these "candy shops", they all had the distinct air of suspiciousness around them. I've never really liked Oxford Street however, even before the flood of US candy. Shopping malls are much better than high streets for actually buying things imho.
possiblelion··on Electricity map: Mapping the climate impact of electricity
I don't think this is a fair representation - for example it makes Estonia and Kosovo stand out in the world as the worst offenders. However they have relatively tiny populations (1.3 million and 1.9 million respectively); the actual CO2 impact of them is miniscule in the world, even if per-capita CO2 seems high.
possiblelion··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
I'll be honest, I've never heard of this Bolt (immediately thought of the multi-billion ridesharing/fooddelivery/micromobility conglomerate). Not a good look posting such a thread, does he have PR consultants?

If not, then an immediate red flag from me.

possiblelion··on Life at 800 MHz
maybe I'm just an ignorant Eastern European, but this honestly boggles my mind. every medical handbook would classify this as mental illness, no?
possiblelion··on Gameboy CT scan – design lessons learned
I am pleasantly surprised each time these scans make it to HN. Something to look forward to each month. Who runs this?
possiblelion··on U.S. to release oil from reserves in coordination with other countries
When that partner is waging a hybrid warfare campaign against the EU, it makes sense to buy from somewhere else.
