portaouflop··on Valetudo: Cloud replacement for vacuum robots enabling local-only operation
putting an open source project out there doesn’t entail _any_ social obligations actually.

I can imagine the author took abuse from some extremely entitled people for some time and then just snapped.

If you ever ran any moderately successful oss project you get dozens of these people all the time; they demand your time, work, and attention and screech, complain, and blackmail you if you don’t instantly succumb to their demands.

It’s the one thing that always turned me off from doing oss more seriously; users are just the worst.

Of course only a small fraction of users but if you have many users it’s a never ending flood

> You either treat people with dignity or you're an asshole.

I don’t think you need to treat people with dignity that don’t treat you with dignity.

There is - as always - a bunch of grey area.

You don’t need to be tolerant towards people that don’t practice tolerance themselves.

Doing so would untermine the whole basis that allows you to be tolerant.

I don’t know anything about this particular case though

Yea HN is notoriously toxic to OSS projects, no wonder that many don’t want traffic from here
portaouflop··on We do not have sufficient links to the UK for Online Safety Act to be applicable
> end result is the same: a denial of service to people in the UK solely because of the country they live in.

This would also probably help sway the public opinion in the UL to stop electing representatives that come up with laws like this - so a win either way.

portaouflop··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
Sure steam is cheaper but that’s how they get you. We shouldn’t always go for the cheapest alternative and then whine when things go to shit
portaouflop··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
Loot boxes in itself are the problem.

You can’t make a non-toxic free2play game.

People need to buy from stores like GoG and stop supporting f2p games at all.

Of course that’s never going to happen; an entire generation was raised on f2p

portaouflop··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
You can also share games you purchased at GoG with all your friends. They do give you a lot of freedom.

It’s maybe the only really “good” actor in that industry left so I try to support them as much as possible

portaouflop··on Willow quantum chip demonstrates verifiable quantum advantage on hardware
Quantum computing is mostly a scheme to get more grants/funding for quantum research, it doesn’t have any real world application and most likely won’t have any in the foreseeable future. Like verifiable means i can run 3x3 on any quantum computer and always get 9 as result - but quantum computers cant even do that. Don’t get me wrong; it’s very cool theoretical research, and more power to the scientist. But thinking it will have any impact on the real world in our lifetime is a pipe dream imho
portaouflop··on Willow quantum chip demonstrates verifiable quantum advantage on hardware
So actually it’s neither verifiable or repeatable in any real-works definition of the words.
portaouflop··on Willow quantum chip demonstrates verifiable quantum advantage on hardware
No it’s still completely useless for the real world. Also not actually verifiable
portaouflop··on ChatGPT Atlas
It’s called the waluigi problem and is also part of the reason why you can never fully “censor” an LLM; there is always some jailbreak possible
portaouflop··on Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video
Why the hell is Yasuke so controversial oO

Invest a little bit in everything / cut all the useless staff and just focus on longevity of the encyclopaedia

it’s certainly doable but requires selfless dedication at the top

portaouflop··on The zipper is getting its first major upgrade in 100 years
I don’t know how to mend at all - but I have an excellent tailor in my neighbourhood who mends stuff like jeans and shirts for me for a reasonable price. Also I love his little shop so I’m happy to pay a bit extra to support that business!
portaouflop··on Ask HN: Our AWS account got compromised after their outage
Why keep accounts like this around anyway? Sounds like a breach was just waiting to happen…
portaouflop··on Doomsday scoreboard
I think Comrade Krasnov is too busy purging his own country of dissidents to care; we are on our own on this one.
portaouflop··on My trick for getting consistent classification from LLMs
I am doing a similar thing for technical documentation, basically i want to recommend some docs at the end of each document. I wanted to use the same approach you outlined to generate labels for each document and thus easily find some “further reading” to recommend for each.

How big should my sample size be to be representative ? It’s a fairly large list of docs across several products and deployment options. I wanted to pick a number of docs per product. Maybe I’ll skip the steps 4/5 as I only need to repeat it occasionally once I labelled everything once

portaouflop··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
It’s gonna be DNS
portaouflop··on The zipper is getting its first major upgrade in 100 years
It also helps to avoid synthetic fabrics in my experience.

But you are right it’s not that easy…

portaouflop··on The zipper is getting its first major upgrade in 100 years
The fix is easy: Don’t buy new clothes from fast fashion brands or stores.

If you only buy quality from small stores and independent designers you still get the same quality you got 15 years ago. Sure it’s 2-3 times the price but it’s worth it.

portaouflop··on Replacement.ai
Human extinction is not a potential it’s just a matter of time. The conditions for human life on this planet have already been eroded enough that there is no turning back. The human race is sleepwalking into nothingness - it’s fine we had a good run and had some great times in between.
portaouflop··on Replacement.ai
Specialization is for insects.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

portaouflop··on Amazon’s Ring to partner with Flock
I believe they changed the algorithm a lot in the last 12+ months; I think bots and automation are becoming more and more of an issue - like everywhere else
portaouflop··on Why more SaaS companies are hiring chief trust officers
If only that were true
portaouflop··on How America got hooked on ultraprocessed foods
Sad that you have to buy this stuff online. I can go downstairs to a grocery store and just buy it from real humans, not lining bezos pockets.
portaouflop··on How America got hooked on ultraprocessed foods
In my experience the store has 10000 different kinds of sweetened yoghurt and exactly one that is “real” yogurt - often doesn’t have full fat yogurt at all.

Completely impossible to get normal bread unless you go to some hipster store that charges an insane amount for it.

It’s just really really hard to get decent food in America, which is crazy because the land is so rich in resources and nature.

portaouflop··on Free software hasn't won
GP was stating that YouTube needs to die and you said PeerTube is the alternative that can kill it - unless I misunderstood something.

I think PeerTube is great but it’s always going to be super niche. If it grows to a level that threatens YouTube I am sure that it would also change/exert economic pressure.

portaouflop··on Free software hasn't won
peertube is cool but it won’t be able to kill YouTube in a million years
portaouflop··on Smartphones and being present
For me reading books works well when I’m sick in bed. You probably need to force yourself for a while but it’s worth it. That being said i was a voracious reader in the past so it might not tickle your toes in the same way
