Everyone will be hit hard by climate change. I do t see why it should be less in eg the Americas - where you already have pretty volatile climate events

We are so cooked. We spend more time trying to suss out if something was written by AI than actually reading the article. So many legitimate ways of writing are now “ai” style. I used to use emdash a lot, but now I deliberately avoid it because it’s an AI smell - using the less “correct” version instead. E

I link to a lot of stuff on my personal website and every month i check the links. About a dozen or so are dead every month, many on YouTube too.

I now adopted the practice of recovering the texts I deem worthy from way back machine and downloading all yt videos I really like locally.

But ofc one day I’ll also hit the bucket; still have to work out a contingency plan for my archive for that …

portaouflop··on X.org Security Advisory: multiple security issues X.Org X server and Xwayland
It does make sense if the vuln doesn’t fit in your threat model. There are always an uncountable number of vulnerabilities and you can never fix all that are found.

No idea of course if the threat model that said boss had in mind made sense. But I always recommend to come up with a reasonable threat model first and then think you can harden against it.

portaouflop··on How the US is preparing a Caribbean staging ground near Venezuela
Looking at what happened in Iran and how unpredictable the US is recently it would almost be stupid to not be scared.

> why military action won't help

Look the “war on drugs” has been running all my life and it’s just been getting worse for the US.

What helps against drug addiction and abuse is not more death and bombs - madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

There are many social programs that have __proven__ results in reducing drug deaths and addiction.

Those would need to be implemented, funded and supported; instead of being cut.

It’s pretty simple actually: listen to the people who work with addicts everyday and design programs after their recommendations.

No idea why you are getting downvoted; this is true.
portaouflop··on How the US is preparing a Caribbean staging ground near Venezuela
Idk the actions the US takes in the Caribbean are the threat and Reuters is reporting on those actions?

It would be weirder imo if they didn’t write about it and afaict they are just looking at publicly available OS data.

portaouflop··on Self-help gets philosophical
I love that and it does make sense to me, thanks for sharing.

Dogma is what you follow blindly and don’t question, whereas ideology while still rigid you can examine and shape according to your own personal values.

portaouflop··on Visopsys: OS maintained by a single developer since 1997
Ever heard of TempleOS?

It’s the only OS endorsed by God.

portaouflop··on Self-help gets philosophical
Definitely. In a way ideology is what shapes our reality so you can never be fully free of it.

It’s like saying “I’m not political”, it’s also a political statement/stance.

Personally I came up with my own flavour of practical Taoism as ideology; something like Konrad from the bridge trilogy

portaouflop··on Self-help gets philosophical
Ideology belongs in the trash.

But yea you can pick and choose parts of some ideologies as they are useful in the moment.

portaouflop··on The profitable startup
I hope you succeed. But I think it’s all down to luck; of course some work is required but I don’t think that hard work necessarily matters. Or any of the stuff you mentioned. In my experience you can do all the “mistakes” you mentioned and still come out on top. And not to piss in your cereal but having leads for $bigcorp means nothing until a deal is inked.

Ps: and I’m very pessimistic; the scary thing is it’s all random as shit

I still use my thinkpad from 2012. It runs fine with Linux on it, i had to replace the hdd and some other parts but otherwise it’s holding up. Granted I only do very simple stuff on it, no dev work, video or gaming. Mostly browser, reading, writing, music and chatting

You are right, it’s an international problem.

But from my experience few nations are so dependent on the car as the US. It so very similar in Germany where I’m from but mostly because it’s such an important part of the economy. But in a big city you can easily live without a car. I found this almost impossible in the US.

portaouflop··on We need a clearer framework for AI-assisted contributions to open source
In a perfect world people would read and understand contribution guidelines before opening a PR or issue.

Alas…

portaouflop··on Amazon confirms 14,000 job losses in corporate division
It’s intentional though see above comment by throw0101c.

I agree that it’s a hard pill to swallow especially if you are US American.

portaouflop··on Amazon confirms 14,000 job losses in corporate division
It’s the same language used when taking about “car accidents”

They aren’t accidents, it’s an inherent part of how we designed cars and roads and we decided as society that we are ok with thousands of people killed by cars.

portaouflop··on Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization
It is just as obviously late stage capitalism - as everyone is busy working 10-12 hours just to survive you have zero time left for costly and hard in-person interactions.
portaouflop··on Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization
For me the problem is that everyone is way too busy working all the time to be able to do this.

So I think it’s not about “internet bad” but more about how much harder it is to make ends meet / how much more intense capitalism has become.

portaouflop··on It's insulting to read AI-generated blog posts
It’s a clever post but people that use so to write personal blogposts ain’t gonna read this and change their mind. Only people who already hate using llms are gonna cheer you on.

But this kind of content is great for engagement farming on HN.

Just write “something something clankers bad”

While I agree with the author it’s a very moot and uninspired point

portaouflop··on It's insulting to read AI-generated blog posts
I disagree. You can use it to point out grammar mistakes and then fix them yourself without changing the meaning or tone of the subject.

I get where you’re coming from.

Although if the project is so toxic and horrible to interact with - wouldn’t people look for a more wholesome project?

I don’t agree that the toxic project would stifle growth for other less toxic projects solely by existing. If it’s that bad then it shouldn’t be that much more popular?

Besides what is stopping people from forking and building a less toxic community?

What irks me mostly about these complaints is exactly that: a whole lot of complaining and handwringing going on and very little action to improve the situation or even trying to understand how it came to be.

portaouflop··on Sora might have a 'pervert' problem on its hands
It’s a lot more to do it with photoshop.
portaouflop··on Sora might have a 'pervert' problem on its hands
There are dozens of scenarios where this will completely ruin your life. One example is someone generating prom of you with underage children and sending it to everyone you know -> life ruined. You can already easily do this with open source models
portaouflop··on Sora might have a 'pervert' problem on its hands
Tbh if you are sufficiently famous or have a bunch of pictures of you available online you don’t need to opt-in.

So this is silly yes but people can still easily make deepfake porn of you from any photo available with other oss tools

portaouflop··on Sora might have a 'pervert' problem on its hands
Making fetish porn is the no1 use case for AI since inception.
portaouflop··on Valetudo: Cloud replacement for vacuum robots enabling local-only operation
You can do it the first couple thousand times. After that it just becomes harder and harder to be sociable.

Would you still be so nice after doing it the ten thousandth time?
