poppysan··on Posthumously pardon Aaron Swartz
I don't like the stereoyype of the nerdy recluse programmer. Sure there are many of them, but just as many socially-comfortable programmers. The generalizations can be harmful and lead people away from the stigma, and away from the field.
poppysan··on Reeddit - Minimalist, elastic and read-only web app client for Reddit
This is not minimalist in my honest opinion. I can see people liking it though!
poppysan··on ‘Grunt Funds’ Are Trending in Startup Circles
Time isnt necessarily the most important factor when considering a persons contribution. If i work faster thus produce more than a partner, or if they are stuck grinding out a problem that i may have breezed through they will be rewarded for their inadequacy, as opposed to an actual relevant contribution.
poppysan··on Mapping Racist Tweets in Response to President Obama's Re-election
There is a reason those are not acceptable sources...
poppysan··on [dead]
but you cant focus on the field to type. You have to use those clunky buttons on the bottom and then hit the mystery button.

But that's not the biggest issue. Say the UI wasn't as faulty. What's the point? Why not just give a link to the file? Or create another url shortner... bhg.twlbox.com is loads easier than this process.

poppysan··on Living in a Van
Also, I get rather preachy with my brothers about how I believe they should proceed with their lives... And they listen, but it's a bit hard to change how people see the world.
poppysan··on Living in a Van
My fathers death was not expected, and, while tight, we were able to live fine before he died. Two incomes turned to one as us kids grew older, taller, more needy. I don't think it's an offensive question, and my situation influenced me to stop at 2 kids.
poppysan··on Living in a Van
I grew up in extreme poverty on a very dangerous street. My father died when I was a child, and with half an income, my mom was forced to work several jobs to support herself and 5 children. The only place we could afford to live was the "ghetto". My siblings and I worked hard each day, with no electricity on some days, no running water on others.

Even with this hard work, only 2 of my siblings have managed to excel to middle class or beyond. None of us have ever been arrested or addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Why did the 3 children advance, while 2 are still struggling? It is because when my father died, my younger 2 siblings were 3 and 4 years old. We moved to the bad neighborhood the year after, and they grew up with no realistic model of "success" with which to strive. The model they were exposed to was that of my mother's new role - take on as many back-breaking jobs as possible just to barely scrape by. My younger brothers work VASTLY harder than I do, with little to show for the effort.

I tell this story as a contrast to your analysis. While poverty breeds desperation (you are definitely more likely to get robbed of your luxury items while in a bad neighborhood), it also adds a grit that is hard to describe. I saw children of Crack-addicted prostitutes making sure that they got themselves and siblings to school each morning. I saw good, honest kids who had little expectation from themselves, or from the world at large. And they achieved (and received) their expectations.

I think its easy to romanticize any situation, but I would seriously implore you to reconsider your preconceived notion on the inhabitants of these low income neighborhoods. The more widespread this belief, the fewer intelligent people willing to work to fix these difficult issues.

poppysan··on Life as a Service
firefighters have many mundane tasks as well. Doctors are exosed to viuses that could be widespread if they fail to do their job properly. Id argue that they are exposed to dangers they can bring home to the kids, which in my opinion make it just as, if not more dangerous.
poppysan··on Ask PG: What Is The Most Frighteningly Ambitious Idea You Have Been Pitched On?
Don't know if this is sarcasm or not... hmmm...
poppysan··on Ask HN: Is it "bad" to use Themeforest?
A few css tweaks and any theme can be made unique. I see no issue in saving time with themes, templates, or the like.
poppysan··on Ask HN: How do I teach myself design?
I am an advocate of looking at what makes pieces you find are designed well, and keeping a "scrapbook" (for lack of a better phrase) of those patterns. Then as you design you can refer to those scraps for things that worked in UI, design, or just enhanced experience. While I don't advocate copying, I think its always better to stand on the shoulders of giants than to start from nothing.
poppysan··on Design Tip: Never Use Black
It really depends. I am not a fan of the tip because it is a bit misleading. The reason there aren't many true blacks in representational art is due to reflection of light into the shadows.

Also, given the overall temperature of an image, it can be just as high-contrast to use a color on the opposite end of the color wheel.

Either way, these are style decisions, which are highly subjective.

poppysan··on Google Fiber Plans & Pricing
Give onlive a try... it really is on the level. AFAIK, they receive your input and process it server-side. What you get is in essence a live video stream. I am sure that it is more complicated in execution, but they make it work - and damn well.
poppysan··on Samsung: Apple wouldn’t have sold a single iPhone without stealing our tech
>Apple is not a hardware company.

Yes, they are. They produce and sell hardware. Is that all they do/are? No. But they are indeed a hardware company.

poppysan··on A Dust Over India
Not sure why this is being down-voted. The over 2 million Americans that are imprisoned do count as citizens, and the prison system is as corrupt as they come, from cases of judges being paid by private prisons(1) to give harsh sentences to minors to the blind eye given to assault and rape behind bars(2).

poppysan··on Amazon cloud outage takes down Netflix, Instagram, Pinterest, & more
If you are hosting on a server(as everyone is) it will, at some point fail. You have to choose a service that has minimal failure combined with quick resolution times. I think AWS fits this description...
poppysan··on Perspective - 2D/3D puzzle platformer
They refaced the exact mega-man sprites. The "borrowing" of the mega man sprite animations so blatant that, as the authors, I'd be worried.
poppysan··on Ask HN: Where to find contract designers?
Here is a good place to start! I am a front-end guy here with a foundation in design. I am a bit busy at the moment, thus unavailable, but there are many more like me that frequent the board. Good Luck!
poppysan··on IT Consumerization: The end of IT is nigh
How do you propose the said companies make sales without a sales team. (Not to be snarky, maybe I am missing something.)

poppysan··on Ask HN: Would you monetize your site by adding deals to it?
Great idea. I think that adding an amount sold to the widget may add a bit of interest. it was the first thing I looked for when I went to the site, and provides a crowd-validation. Thanks!!
poppysan··on Terms with Outsourced development team
I know you are outsourcing the low-level coding, but if I were you, I'd look for slightly more senior guys. 10/hr comes with a lot of hiccups in my experience. But maybe you guys are willing to put a little more management time into the project for the discount. Either way its a give and take. Good luck!
poppysan··on Thou shall not steal (except for websites)?
Could quite possibly be built on the same template.

(edit: I think it is a copy. Fount this on both css site's css files -"College Park Home Page 2.0 - JD Collier, Fishhook jd@fishhook.us")

poppysan··on Windows 8 tablet PC makers: We can't compete with the iPad's price
Tablets have come a long way in those 20 years, my pessimistic friend. At the scale of tablet use, with loads of developers and very smart people in general looking at usability issues, many issues have been solved, and will be.
poppysan··on Windows 8 tablet PC makers: We can't compete with the iPad's price
I look forward to doing what I do on my desktop and more on a tablet, but the typing aspect isn't quite there yet. Why fear something like full Photoshop on the go, or a real suite of programming tools at your disposal?

If the typing issue was resolved (without adding a clunky, external keyboard) Then there it would effectively replace the laptop in my eyes.

poppysan··on Too Hot for TED: Income Inequality
I have to disagree. 31 billion may not wipe out the deficit, but it is a good start. The alternative minimum tax is another good start. I think there will be no single thing that eliminates our deficit, and have yet to hear negatives to the "rich" paying a bit more, especially if many of them are for it.
poppysan··on Got a million but what now
I would second this. This is a lucrative field, and being from the inside may offer you an insight that not many others have.

You also don't need to know how to code to begin a start-up. I would take the time to learn, but you can get the ball rolling with freelancers. Then, validate your idea and build a prototype.
