popee··on The real anti-Facebook is good old email
No, you just need to handle few additional smtp header fields ;-)
popee··on Ask HN: Do you think there will be a full replacement to Google?

But far less if you don't personalize everything?

popee··on Web We Want
> SIP? SIP is terrible, it's an attempt at replicating the telco model of separate control plane vs talk channel of a traditional telephone company.

Good point and I agree, but it solves problem of direct communication between users (NAT traversal). It would be great if SIP had plain and simple GET method (without need for session/dialog).

> This doesn't follow either. If I host a webpage on my personal computer, I can host the js/css in exactly the same way.

How can I get your js/css from outside, if you are behind NAT? STUN? NAT traversal is already part of standard SIP infrastructure.

Sorry on stubbornness, just trying to brainstorm a little.

popee··on Web We Want
The web I want is merge of SIP and rendering engines for HTML5/css. SIP is federated and decentralized but really similar to HTTP. The problem is in difference between URL and URI, because URIs are hosted/registered directly on user computers/agents, so for example it's not possible to take advantage of javascript/css. If someone could hacks this, transition would be really smooth.

But we already have webRTC, why SIP? It's standardized, mature and more basic protocol. Ofc WebRTC is based on SIP, but with who knows how many additional layers.

> Decentralised systems tend to lose to centralised ones because there's no money locus for advertising, development or curation.

Yeah, e-mail systems lost :-) Anyway, corporate monopols are problem, not systems.

popee··on Ask HN: Which language to learn for long-term work
I'd first ask myself where do I want to be: enterprise, freelance, community/FLOSS, ...? After that, it's not hard to make list of langs that are mostly used in these areas and personally i'd choose langs that are in more than one area.

Ok, this has one big flaw, it doesn't tell much about langs that are still in development (rust, go, ...), so keep that in mind.

> Why not just do a federated network of servers like Usenet?

Or SMTP-like, but instead email messages, federations share content/votes/...

popee··on Ask HN: Why Node.js and for which type of App?
Node on desktop is still in early stage, there are some projects but node shines on server side, not only for web/http (mega simple), but also any other application protocols or lower. It's not hard to make socket and do whatever you want + async = win.

On the other hand it's javascript, so :-)

popee··on Croatia just canceled the debts of its poorest citizens
Hi, croat here. Just one detail, this year there will be elections in Croatia and current gov didn't do anything useful for our economy, so this is kind of popular measure. Don't get me wrong, it's always nice to help, but situation is little bit complicated, taxes are very high and in some way this is not fair to people that are paying everything. Also, there are huge number of people living and exploiting social measures, so ... In this context it's impossible to help those who really need help.

You know what is the saddest part? Opposition party (conservatives that ruled from 2007-2011) is convicted for criminality and they are atm most popular, so for common and independent people there is no light at the end of the tunnel. If someone can solve this chaos he/she will be candidate for Nobel's price.

P.S. Sorry on bad english

popee··on A Meditation on the Art of Not Trying
> Once i learned to trust the process, I just let go.

Exactly. It was really hard to digest the fact that it works, because you know everybody think faster == better, but important part of process is to have clear picture -> distinguishing between important and irrelevant == slow. Anyway, in the end you make everything faster, because you go right way from the start.

popee··on A Meditation on the Art of Not Trying
Went to isolated island for one month to finish project and decided to relax for few weeks. 10 days of relaxation was most fruitful, but in a sense that solutions just popped up in my mind during sunbathing and doing nothing. Anyway, in one moment i saw things from new perspective with clear vision on what has to be done, and at that point things were so simple and beautiful it was easier to just rewrite from scratch.

Conciousness is overrated, subconciousness is the key - works even after working hours. It only needs will, time and little bit of work ;-)

Funny fact, didn't know anything about wu wei back then.

popee··on The Case for Slow Programming
Yeah, absolutely wrong nomenclature and it would be better to call it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_wei

> Wu wei is an important concept in Taoism that literally means non-action or non-doing ie. "effortless doing"

Set goal, think and explore a little, rest a lot and wait until you get clear picture. Then and only then start coding.

Pros: No burnouts, less stress, etc, and constantly moving forward (in contrast to 2 steps forward 1 step back cycle) what results in overall faster progress.

Cons: Personally it's sometimes pain in the ass to wait, but it's important to understand -> not to be obsessed with job. Get a hobby, do something else and let unconscious part of your brain deal with what needs to be done -> mind blowing discovery for me that actually works, but still have to get used to this concept :-)

popee··on Bits from the Debian GNU/Hurd porters
I'm aware of this and it's rational choice, but whata opportunity. They (just maybe) could also add compatibility layer on top of something else, like other projects do, but nvm.
popee··on Bits from the Debian GNU/Hurd porters
> Switch to pthreads.

I'm not aware what they used before, but why pthreads? Isn't this perfect opportunity to try to develop something better, introduce new concepts (async, coroutines or some kind of userspace deterministic job management)? Not sure if backward compatibility is best way to go here, but maybe i'm just talking gibberish

You just solved some of my problems. Thank you very much!

Btw is there any nodejs module for voting? I've done it myself for one app but it would be nice to see other solutions.

> Python is good for a wide range of simple and interesting problems that would be too much effort in C. (Seriously, a basic spellchecker can be implemented in a few lines of Python.)

But, but, someone somewhere in galaxy far away already made lib so you can use it in C with only few lines of code.

Can someone say what this is used for:

?

This is not like net interface blob, this is like google firmware and we all know what that means >:-)

popee··on Center of the universe
When you say gay story what do you mean? I'm straight but i don't think this is gay story, it involves homosexual momentum, like, let's say Naked Lunch, but is not pro or even against gays. Author really tried to make neutral view about everything and he tried to make human analysis of situation in which he was involved.
popee··on Center of the universe
What if you are over thinking it? Maybe he was gay and knew he had to be careful from experience?
popee··on Center of the universe
This story is for great (non-blockbuster) movie. Almodovar, but with good ending :-)

But it's interesting to think why is author still alive. Is killer possessive gay that is willing to kill guys that are ignoring/rejecting him? Because author didn't reject him as many others that are now in the grave?

Also, even if author is wrong, really interesting and non-intrusive emotional overview.

popee··on Less is exponentially more (2012)
Just an opinion and maybe even wrong. If you really care about performance you (must) care about control and you, in most extreme way, want C not C++.
popee··on Web development in C: Crazy?
libfcgi (C) + postgres worked like a charm for me. There are also things like libmicrohttpd, libevent/libev, ... that are also very useful if you want to play even more. It's not that hard if you know C.
popee··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on (2012)
> it's endemic in web development

Important word here: 'web'. If you move that word all ror puritanism falls apart. For example imagine multi-protocol MVC. In that sense javascript is really part of view and it can 'pass messages' to model using ajax.

popee··on Microsoft and Google to sue over US surveillance requests
Why haven't they do this before? Cause now this looks like damage control, they have to show they care because they are losing money. But tooo late, compromised services opened significant area for others, only in question is quality, but quality is also defined by people using those services and lot of people want to use something not compromised -> if you ask me now is right time to get dirty and do the job.
