I have friends who work at gentrified restaurants in Budapest and they tell me the owners pocket all the tips. Only American tourists tip haha.
popcalc··on Ask HN: Is it a bad idea to make an email domain with an uncommon TLD?
Because .COM is administered by a major US player in the military industrial complex, it's the de-facto US TLD. By choosing a dotcom you're signalling your commitment to play ball with US policy. This is why Rubmaps switched to .CH around the time of FOSTA-SESTA.
popcalc··on Ask HN: Is it a bad idea to make an email domain with an uncommon TLD?
.CH and .LI should be the first pick if you're buying in long term. .COM etc. are Verisign Corp (essentially US Gov) names and you're screwed if there's a global conflict down the line and want to be treated neutrally. I'm not tying myself to the future Montenegrin (.ME) administration or god forbid some fly-by-night meme gTLD run out of Hong Kong that goes bankrupt in two years and defaults on their ICANN payments, getting wiped from the root zone.
popcalc··on Olympians turn to OnlyFans to fund dreams due to 'broken' finance system (2024)
Statistically most accounts are people signing up, trying it for a couple days half-heartedly, and giving up. You can be morbidly obese, deformed, and geriatric and rake in multiple six figures /year within months if you're going in with an actual agency.

More sound than half the comments in this thread.

Most of the debt was/is taken on to pay off political patrons, mostly characterized in the form of marked-up procurement. The IMF then turns off the tap as soon as a new regime takes power and decides to default. They don't stop making the maintenance payments because their rivals will pay off the patrons they can't and they would lose their support.

Their taxes are high because cronyism is pervasive and society is structure in a rigid caste-based hierarchy.

>conquer territory

It's about keeping western capital interests in line, stopping developing nations from nationalizing key resources etc. Bolivia is a good example of a country that has persisted against it.

>To this day, the reason it's accepted is because we consider it going to the common good and pooling our money to save ourselves money.

Have you ever lived in the developing world?

You cannot as a private person legally move more than about 100K USD out of mainland CN per year. You have to resort to criminal elements. Only they have the network. It's one of those things everyone does but lives in fear of being used against them by an enemy down the line.

You can't discount precedent as a major force in human nature. Domestic abuse is one good example. Another is taxation, a system originally built off of ritualized extortion from pillaging hordes of nomads and empires in conquest.

Yeah, they pay in cash up front. I've seen sometimes physical bundles of bills.

In the past 40 years how many countries has the US invaded and how many has China?

Because the legal/administrative costs of a lawsuit will bankrupt the poor. It's not worth the risk unless the a group like the EFF expressly backs them. This is systematic.
popcalc··on Chewing gum in Singapore has been illegal since 1992
“When first introduced, the ban caused much controversy and some open defiance. Some people took the trouble of travelling to neighbouring Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to purchase chewing gum. Offenders were publicly "named and shamed" by the government, to serve as a deterrent to other would-be smugglers.”

Reads like a fever dream.

popcalc··on The INTERNET is killing old PC hardware [video]
Slack is the worst I have to deal with on a daily basis. Fans always spin up on my T490 and it takes 10-15 seconds for all DOM elements to fully render. This is a laptop I have no problem compiling browsers on and it gets hammered by what could be replaced by existing XMPP clients that initialize faster than a blink of an eye.

https://once.com/campfire

Haven't tried this but it's a Slack alternative from the Basecamp folks, source included and works on airgapped networks.

Second worst offender I have to deal with is Jira web. I've had CTOs tell me they know it's crap but they force their startups to use it from the get-go because it makes getting acquihired easier because the other company likely already uses it. Truly Kafkaesque.

PWAs were the beginning of the end. The crossplatform time savings got Node off the ground and then young webdevs fresh out of 2010s bootcamps never learned why MVC separation exists. 99% of bundled web apps would be faster to develop, more maintainable, more secure, and be snappy on a 20 year old laptop if built in dotnet MVC or RoR. How is there no movement against this virus? Javascript frameworks are the only reason the average person has had to buy a new PC in the last decade.

popcalc··on Show HN: Instant and Dynamic Zip Download Solution
Why does this have to be a service, paid or otherwise? Why should a client trust you with their S3 creds and data? It feels like something that could be implemented in max 3 billed hours by one engineer.

>href="sms:XXX-XXX-XXXX"

That's pretty nifty.

Also try prepending "Show HN:" to the post title so it gets put in the show tab.

It was started by the founder of clips4sale and intended primarily for the findom kink. They really pushed the SFW angle early on as a way of hanging on to Stripe's low processing rates.

>a lot of financial incentive to buying items abroad and importing in your luggage

>very few exceptions

You've got it backwards. If you're an American you're probably traveling through freeports or low tax regimes like Singapore, UK, etc. and don't realise how regressive most regimes are. In places like Hungary, Angola, SEA -- where tax can be in the range of 30-50% you will be lucky not to be shaken down by a customs agent before leaving the luggage carousel.
