politelemon··on Working on Products People Hate
The nature of feedback is that the most vocal express their dislike of a product more loudly and are noticed. The people who like the product won't often take time to express it. So it would certainly help you to take the criticism with some salt.
politelemon··on Hours battery life: Dell XPS 14 2026 lasts 3x longer vs. MacBook Air 15 M5
Had to truncate the title, it's: 43 hours battery life: Dell XPS 14 2026 lasts almost 3x longer vs MacBook Air 15 M5 in web browsing test
politelemon··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
> But “sent from iPhone” is sometimes useful,

No, it is still an advert, and not useful in the least.

I think this is a ray cast issue, looking at these links. It appears on gitlab too, which is enough for me.

politelemon··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
Child comments here indicates its from Ray cast, and the messaging appears on gitlab too.

politelemon··on The road to electric in charts and data
The "or with the potential to have" is hiding away a lot, to the point of being misleading. Most homes, especially in flats and terraced housing, which are the majority, won't have the infrastructure support for charging point conversion.
politelemon··on Stop Calling Every AI Miss a Hallucination
If it's going to be marketed as AI the way it currently is, I'm going to call it a hallucination.
politelemon··on Reducing our monorepo size to improve developer velocity
That's a nice write up. I would have followed the same initial thought process as well but it's good to learn about where the host plays a part. To that end I do wonder if the behaviour would have been different on gitlab.

The tuned window and depth parameters part felt like you're skipping some interesting details, more info there would have been appreciated.

The bits about AI felt completely forced and irrelevant to the actual contents.

politelemon··on Llama.cpp with CUDA Support on Original Jetson Nano (4GB)
Nice work, the benchmarks don't look terrible for what it is, especially the prompt processing.
politelemon··on Simple English Wikipedia
I've occasionally found this to be useful on some of the denser pages on main Wikipedia where some of the words are equally dense pages on their own.
politelemon··on TUI for Vibe Coders
> Homebrew on Linux.

Please do not recommend this.

politelemon··on Tell HN: Firefox is being slowly deprecated by the industry
This isn't unusual for Apple, who appear to be aspiring to Microsoft business practices from a few decades ago. If they cannot be bothered to support you, you can return in kind by not supporting them and their practices either.

I don't agree with this post being flagged, but HN seems to suppress anything that's remotely critical of apple, don't be surprised if this is removed.

politelemon··on Tell HN: Firefox is being slowly deprecated by the industry
They're forcing the use of their browser.
politelemon··on Why are executives enamored with AI, but ICs aren't?
> it’s the same as adding robots that enables workers to pack twice as many pallets per day.

It isn't this. This is the executive's misinterpretation.

politelemon··on I am leaving the AI party after one drink
> Do you drive an automatic car? Do you use a microwave? Do you buy food from a grocery store? Do you own power tools

Which of these is behind a subscription paywall and owned by another party that would cut off your access immediately?

These comparisons make little sense, which is the problem with comparisons. They are soundbites from enthusiasts who don't know or understand how this technology will actually affect or shape us, but feel entitled enough to misinform the rest of us.

> When you know CSS well (and I would consider myself as someone who does), you quickly find weird and broken things in the generated code.

You have encountered https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Gell-Mann_Amnesia_effect

politelemon··on Apple says no one using Lockdown Mode has been hacked with spyware
You won't see that anywhere without their usual procedure of redefining the problem definition.

Sorry but you still need to be wary of state actors and the handing over of data to authorities, which is a far simpler approach than breaking security boundaries. The hacking statement is pure marketing.

politelemon··on Anatomy of the .claude/ folder
And that we're living in a post engineering world.
politelemon··on Hold on to Your Hardware
> If you need a new device, buy it;

I would specifically add, whatever you have, or whatever you choose to buy, it would greatly benefit you to ensure a degree is Linux compatibility to ensure its lifespan can be extended further than the greed enthusiasts at MS, Apple, and Google would like you to. They will be facing the same declines in purchasing habits and are further incentivised to assert their ownership over what you might mistakenly consider your devices.

politelemon··on Anthropic is preparing to release new models – Mythos and Capybara
The sky falling is largely solved.
politelemon··on We rewrote JSONata with AI in a day, saved $500k/year
> No longer just vibe coding

It is, by definition.

politelemon··on Fyn: An uv fork with new features, bug fixes, stripped telemetry
Imo, uv scripts with the dependencies in the header.

politelemon··on OpenClaw is a security nightmare dressed up as a daydream
The overlap between the target audience for openclaw in spite of its attack surface, and the audience that considers a mac mini to be a sandbox while handing over the keys to their digital life is a Venn Eclipse.
politelemon··on MAUI Is Coming to Linux
I like the possibilities this opens up but I'm struggling to understand how wasm is involved. I had the impression it doesn't have a user interface, but it's called by javascript instead.
politelemon··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
I argue that developers enable the egregious behaviour by supporting safari in the first place. Just as IE was called out and shunned for its shenanigans, before they started behaving better, so too does safari need to be treated. However, it does also feel too late, they have crippled other browsers too with their platform abuse masquerading as requirements while we celebrated it.
politelemon··on Show HN: Joonote – A note-taking app on your lock screen and notification panel
Great demo video as well, I appreciated that it didn't waste time. I'll echo the comments here though, the name doesn't sit well with some audiences.
politelemon··on Our commitment to Windows quality
I will give them this one benefit of the doubt. The tone in the blog post is a straightforward one that is rare to see in such communications, without fluff or marketing speak. It's a rare acknowledgment of going a bit nuts with the copilot integrations. It did look like they were trying to see what sticks and presumably the answer is, we can't figure out what did.

Personal computing is a rare niche these days thanks to the majority who have chosen to give over the personal aspect to the privacy hostile duopoly of MS and Apple (while celebrating doing so) who hold the leash.

politelemon··on FSF statement on copyright infringement lawsuit Bartz v. Anthropic
The title is:

The FSF doesn't usually sue for copyright infringement, but when we do, we settle for freedom

politelemon··on Push events into a running session with channels
It isn't a fallacy and nothing should ever be above criticism.
politelemon··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I'm not in agreement with most of you, hn. They've found a decent compromise that works for power users and the general population. Your status as a power user does not invalidate the need to help the more vulnerable.

Having to wait a day for a one off isn't a big deal, if they kept it looser then you'd be shouting about the amount of scams that propagate on the platform.
