poisonborz··on China is increasingly a home to major brands
Disregarding issues with politics or privacy, I find the rise of Chinese manufacturing quality astonishing. I ordered all kinds of consumer articles in the last 20 years and the improvements have been big and steady. In recent years they also leapfrogged on the service front, like how AliExpress offers Amazon-like return policy despite having fraction of the infra and the wares under tax sanctions. I see not only more chinese cars, but construction and medical equipment. Price/performance is always excelling.

One would think this would trigger some sort of revival and competing from US/EU industries, but not much had happened yet besides lobbying for sanctions.

poisonborz··on Bitchat – A decentralized messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks
They relied only on scanning nearby id-s, without communication.
poisonborz··on Game publishers respond to Stop Killing Games claim it curtails developer choice
These are weak arguments but there are valid ones why I would not think this has a footing, even if I support the attitude. What about games where the world is fully generative, tied to a licensed engine? You can't just rip/disable licensed items out, they may form a significant part of business code. Code and APIs would be needed to be documented. Why just games? What about abandoned Saas offerings? These restrictions might creep over.

I hate live service games like the next guy but legal advisors can bend these to form powerful counter-arguments.

poisonborz··on Stop Killing Games
False dichotomy. The only reason your own can go black is some hw/sw failure, a risk which anyone can minimise easily by having copies. Your access of a remote corporate server can go away for 1000 reasons, making you more vulnerable.

Of course it's more complex, like how often that data changes and costs of backups vs subscription price. But I find any argument for cloud products etching towards a "you'll own nothing and be happy" economy.

poisonborz··on Stop Killing Games
Anything you don't own can go black any time regardless of how many 9s they write in the contract. You don't own it, you have a revokeable right of access.
poisonborz··on Electronic Arts Leadership Are Out of Their Goddamned Minds
How they actually would had a chance is to develop 1000 such experimental games with those resources and see what sticks. Unimaginable in a corporate setting though.
poisonborz··on Want to meet people, try charging them for it?
Title is a bit misleading, he became a popular academic/author and the proceedings are for charity. Once you are well known, you can charge for a lot of things, especially if it's for a good cause.
poisonborz··on Show HN: Sink – Sync any directory with any device on your local network
[flagged]
poisonborz··on Researchers develop a battery cathode material that does it all
Ah,the the traditional weekly battery research breakthough post.
poisonborz··on A new PNG spec
Society wholeheartedly thanks Google for saving costs for Google
poisonborz··on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
eOS uses microG. I'd wish Fairphone offered partnership with GrapheneOS, especially now that Google broke their workflow. Sandboxed Play Services is pretty much a must for a lot of people.
poisonborz··on A new PNG spec
Not backwards compatible. We just add it to that nice cupboard "great advanced image formats we will forget about".

Society doesn't need a new image format. I'd wager to say not any new multimedia format. Big corporate entites do, and have churning them out at a steady pace.

Look at poor webp - a format pushed by the largest industry players - and the abysmal everyday use it gets, and the hate it generates.

poisonborz··on Show HN: Progressor – coach that breaks down big goals into actionable steps
Great idea, et cetera, here's what you came for:

- You expect me to enter my most personal habits, plans and project ideas yet you do not mention privacy or how data is used at all on your start page. The privacy policy is napkin sized (did you write it yourself? don't do that). This should be a primary point to elaborate from the start. Especially when this is AI powered (also revealed only on second step).

- No pricing information, only a "start for free" button. I have no idea what subscription I'm sinking my effort into. No thanks.

poisonborz··on Samsung embeds IronSource spyware app on phones across WANA
The same people can be scammed to give passwords, click links, perform any human action, so what's the difference besides giving up yet another freedom?
poisonborz··on Samsung embeds IronSource spyware app on phones across WANA
Why? What is the reason root would be dangerous, if it's not the default? People can be scammed to activate it, but those same people can be scammed to click links and give passwords and personal data. Any action requiring root would need a warning and raise suspicion, or put behind an activation mechanism that's complex enough.

Anything else and you lose freedom, and the whole ethos that enabled the advanced IT landscape of today.

poisonborz··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
It's profitable for investment because of low supply.
poisonborz··on Framework Laptop 12 review
I just wish somebody would make a quality, powerful 2in1 laptop model with a long commitment. Thinkpad X Yogas were the ones, but their price/perf is down the drain and you can't get one with DGPU.

There were some passable gaming models from others but with the usual QA issues of non-business products, and mostly one-off experiments/no refreshes.

Dear HA, tent mode in a laptop is great, please generate more enthusiast demand.

poisonborz··on Sam Altman says Meta offered OpenAI staffers $100M bonuses
It's incredible to me that talent != moral values is this widespread. I know this was pre-Cambridge Analytica but the writing was on the wall, and we see the same with each new tech wave.

Whenever I ask such people, they talk about the incredible perks, stock options, challenges. They do say they are overburdened though.

These are people who would be rich anyway, and could work anywhere, doing much more good.

poisonborz··on Which company would you prefer to join?
Would need an option "to not join the other" when asking why.
poisonborz··on Why JPEGs still rule the web (2024)
The actual issue is that this is not an issue for the users. Only global providers, so they were the ones pushing "obscure" solutions. Music fidelity was more of a consumer problem, so formats like FLAC found a foothold besides the go-to one.
poisonborz··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
What's the point of a translucent taskbar? I might understand in a taskbar of a desktop wallpaper to not disturb the scene, but what information does it hold if the search bar over a map or a link list is translucent? It's just useless noise.
poisonborz··on Apple Is on Defense at WWDC
The big money is not in corporate, Apple was the one who proved it, Google followed quickly. Microsoft doesn't get to keep that crown because it's so good at it, no one is really interested anymore. Apple still eats their hardware pie up without much effort already.
poisonborz··on BYD's Five-Minute Charging Puts China in the Lead for EVs
It only needs 1360 kilowatt per charging pole... won't happen at scale. It's like those LCD navigation systems in 80s cars - impressive futuristic tech, but not what it actually brought that change.
poisonborz··on I got a remote job for a EU company, I'd find it hard to go back to a US-based
50% of the time? Maybe misunderstood, this was about resignation/notice period. You have to be employed 3-6 months to get employment protection. Paid off time is around 25-30 days everywhere.
poisonborz··on I got a remote job for a EU company, I'd find it hard to go back to a US-based
> seems totally unbelievable.

Had it multiple times, AMA. Actually more in real life, once I was laid off start of the calendar month, which I was not expected to work off either. This is regular employees, top managers get 6 months. US engineers thinking they live the top life, not knowing how exploited they are.

poisonborz··on I got a remote job for a EU company, I'd find it hard to go back to a US-based
EU laws are mostly scynchronized. Bulgaria has 1 month guaranteed minimum, IT companies typically give 3 as well.
poisonborz··on I got a remote job for a EU company, I'd find it hard to go back to a US-based
The whole point is that this doesn't matter, it's a much less important factor than US employees would assume.
poisonborz··on Show HN: Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device
Very cool project, we need more competition in this space - other option is like Air Gradient One, also open source.

Famous HN "but": I find it baffling that by default we are shown this cutesy animation, that gets boring real fast, and actual measurement values in tiny font in the corner, which must be manually switched to for each sensor? Why not just show all sensor values in large font?

poisonborz··on Show HN: A toy version of Wireshark (student project)
Have to say it would be worth making this project just for the sake of this pun alone.
poisonborz··on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders?
Buy used. Same argument could be made for smartphones but the used market is so big that price is no issue, homeless people have smartphones. A quick search says $30-40 for mid-aged devices, I saw paperwhite models for $10 on flea market (got a few for smart home use).
