poisonborz··on The future of Rebble
> will accelerate our efforts to produce new hardware

Don't do that. Don't give me hope...

poisonborz··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
What do we understand under "banks"? If keeping with the simply notion of "stores funds and provides debit cards", the most common usage in EU, especially east, banks were deeply disrupted. Revolut and Wise took a large segment of the youth, who now also got hooked on more services like savings accounts and stocks. They have startup-like culture while being registered as standard banks. Obviously their services, quality and support are lightyears ahead of any traditional financial institution.

poisonborz··on First Look: Loops, by Pixelfed – Decentralised TikTok Competitor (2024)
Social networks should be about socialising and not a minority of professional content creators enriched by doomscroll-fueled advertisements.

Once people get feedback and good experiences things are evened out much better. Look at Tumblr or even Reddit, that despite being popular, never had influencer culture.

poisonborz··on How I Use Home Assistant in 2025
Like many other commenters here say, however nice and increasingly better Home Assistant is, in effect you will manage 10, 20, 50+ devices that may receive updates, live in your network - whether wifi or zigbee, all have their issues - interfere with each other or just plain break.

I love the possibilities, it's often calming and nice to show off, but like with all things personal infrastructure, I have an increasing nausea and regret, along with the sunken cost fallacy.

poisonborz··on Trae: AI Code Editor from ByteDance
However true this is _here_, I really dislike this sentence, as it spills capitalist sentiment and distrust. How much are you the product when using Firefox (even if Mozilla gets ad revenue). How much are you the product with an OSS or community product, or a free tier for a reputable cloud offering?
poisonborz··on Show HN: NotepadJs – A cross-platform love letter to Notepad
What I learned: do not use ephemeral tools like this as scratchpad. You never know when you will need this data and as soon as you start saving these snippets it becomes tedious. Also unsaved tabs block software updates etc. Use something like Obsidian or default Notes on macos.
poisonborz··on Japan Offers Free Daycare to Boost Tokyo's Falling Birth Rate
Why just mothers?
poisonborz··on Please don't force dark mode
We've again came to full circle, with so many posts damning "no dark mode" sites back then. Maybe there is enough audience now for a "BrightReader" browser extension?
poisonborz··on Mark Zuckerberg blamed Sheryl Sandberg for Meta 'inclusivity' push: report
Literally every social network launched in the last decade was outspokenly anti-Zuck, all of them failed or are struggling. People don't care.
poisonborz··on Investigating an "evil" RJ45 dongle
TLDR: it is not "evil"
poisonborz··on Rumor About GPT-5 Changes Everything
Sorry but this is not only dumb speculation, but a harmful one. It spreads the cool aid all AI companies are sprinkling - maybe it actually is a marketing piece - that AI development is accelerating, (LLM-based) AGI is "almost" here, and in some secret labs and startups the Real Deal is already cooking.

No one could guard such a breakthrough secret. What actually is being rumored is that GPT-5 is not that much of a leap over current models AND it's expensive to run (especially compared the amount of money they already burning with current model). Which is, well, rather believeable considering the state of the industry.

poisonborz··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Maybe people don't like to restart their lives like that if it's avoidable, even if it costs more.
poisonborz··on Nobody cares
Just want to thank you for standing up for your values at your workplace. I wish more SWEs would have morals like this.
poisonborz··on AI Brad Pitt dupes French woman out of €830k
Just a google search away, but the most obvious, british, spanish, dutch royal families, Habsburgs, Thurn und Taxis, hundreds more, also from business life. This "wealth switches hands often" thing is a wise-sounding dumbness, wealth gets more and more concentrated in the world, and is usually only redistributed in event of war and conflicts.
poisonborz··on AI Brad Pitt dupes French woman out of €830k
Let's just ignore thousands of European noble families and wealthy industrial tycoon dynasties.
poisonborz··on Using coding skills to make passive income
The world would require an x-th number of skilled developers existing for problems that could be solved by digital services. Ask in any forum about any niche/hobby/expert field and they tell you dozens of things they would gladly pay for but doesn't exist.

It's one thing to be a good dev/coder, but another level entierly to be a one man team delivering a product.

poisonborz··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
So private consumers should just pay cloud subscription if they want safer/modern data storage for their PC? (without NAS)
poisonborz··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
Way better data security, resilience against file rotting. This goes for both HDDs or SSDs. Copy-on-write, snapshots, end to end integrity. Also easier to extend the storage for safety/drive failure (and SSDs corrupt in a more sneaky way) with pools.
poisonborz··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
I just don't get it how the Windows world - by far the largest PC platform per userbase - still doesn't have any answer to ZFS. Microsoft had WinFS and then ReFS but it's on the backburner and while there is active development (Win11 ships some bits time to time) release is nowhere in sight. There are some lone warriors trying the giant task of creating a ZFS compatibility layer with some projects, but they are far from being mature/usable.

How come that Windows still uses a 32 year old file system?

poisonborz··on Nvidia's Project Digits is a 'personal AI supercomputer'
Welcome to tomorrow's "personal" computer, a single unmodifiable SoC with closed source software stack.
poisonborz··on Show HN: I made it easy to create invoices
Many people saying here "Pay once, fishy, not trustable". I don't know how much this critic relates to the topic for each commenter (invoicing, being a constantly changing field) but how the general public loathes subscriptions and binding, I actually would double-triple consider any subscription-based software (I'm speaking generally here, not invocing) and would always choose the one-time payment over it.

OP: there could be a better middle ground - you could still offer a one-time payment, and optional subscriptions to newer versions (eg. conformity to newer regulations).

poisonborz··on Kids can't use computers and this is why it should worry you (2013)
> If I wanted to play games I had to write them.

This reminds me of "in my childhood we could only ate car tires for breakfast, then walked 10km to school barefoot, chased by a bear" posts. You most definitely did not need to write your own DOS games, they were abundant.

poisonborz··on I'm quitting the Washington Post
Facts are uninteresting. Our highly empirical world produces more facts by the minute, and people get a natural resistance. You can line up 10 facts and maybe indicate some truth. Viewers can come up with 10 different fact (a fact for them at least) against this. It is the narrative that forms opinions. Single impactful facts can move public opinion, but to produce those you don't need some big conglomerate with hundreds of employees.

> They are not trying to tell people what to think, or even what the reporter thinks.

There is increasingly small amount of venues with this kind of attitude (regional TV or some EU state media comes to mind) and besides this never being really true (what is report-worthy?) it's so mind numbingly boring that no wonder it's dying out. In a world where people can customize content 100% to their preference it is a naive concept.

poisonborz··on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Officially Erased From Canon
This is a fan theory and explosion of a little fan service that Lower Decks did.

Discovery is mostly bad, but based on the first half of S1, I think there was a screenwriting seed of a much better show that got mutated. Jason Isaacs's base character was wonderful, it would have been awesome to see a crew with a captain that is controversial and not liked. It would have been a great twist on ST shows where captains are always spotless role models. Clicks in the team, conflicts of interest would have been a bold new direction. Also side props for Anthony Rapp.

poisonborz··on Mullvad Review of 2024
Why is that nonsense? It totally makes sense to lower the price on bulk purchase. You can upload whatever amount of credit to Mullvad as well and I doubt most users purchase month to month. It's just a more elegant way to stay pricey. There are similar small independent competitors that are half their price for a year and I doubt they are half as private or less performant.
poisonborz··on Sipeed NanoKVM-PCIe
You can selfhost the control server, look at headscale, all the clients support this.
poisonborz··on Matt Mullenweg temporarily shuts down some Wordpress.org functions
I think views are mostly uniform around here. Matt had a few valid points but they are overall meritless. WPE would have been nice to contribute more, but they are absolutely not required to. Rug-pulling an open-source project and making defamation like this is a very dangerous example, and as we will see, also illegal. Would be interested in your arguments, I haven't read much if any in his support.
poisonborz··on Intel Terminates X86S Initiative
While I don't think ARM = the Apple way, we see that nowadays no one would create a component ecosystem like there was around x86. This would be the death of personal computing, we would just own appliances.

So we should cherish and extend x86 while we can.

poisonborz··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
However important, this is a niche problem. Most users will not be able use a dumb TV. Everything becomes more clunky for them. Instead of fighting the uphill battle of making legislation, more people should be made aware of the issue and the - not that complicated - ways to counter this.

Pihole, not giving internet (only local network) / and/or only use a trusted device via HDMI to display content.
