I’m not convinced. That sort of thing usually depends on some very specific arcana or weird interaction between systems that is not in the code. It usually requires either external knowledge or deep investigation and compilation of evidence from multiple sources. I haven’t seen AI do that much.

Look at recent examples of browsers and matrix servers. AI can’t even follow extremely detailed specs with extensive test suites.

If anything, nice and friendly but mediocre devs are in more immediate danger than rough but extremely competent devs.

But we’ve seen C-suits losing institutional knowledge at a drop of a hat for decades so who knows? Maybe knowledge and skill are not that valued.

pointlessone··on Data centers in space makes no sense
DGX is only 10,2 kW. But also only 8 H200s. Kyber seems a bit more power efficient (per-GPU) but requires much more power for a single unit. With that power requirement it doesn’t seem like it will fly.
pointlessone··on Data centers in space makes no sense
It should be smaller than ISS. IIRC, ISS has three solar arrays and two radiators. DGX is about the size of a fridge. Let’s add two more fridges worth of infra for solar and radiator. Maybe another fridge for comms. But these three fridges replace all the modules of ISS. It’s still gonna be about 6 (maybe up to 10?) tons of mass to lift. But Starship can do 100-150 tons to LEO so might be doable.
pointlessone··on Data centers in space makes no sense
Whatever it is it’s not driven by sense or even feasibility of data centers in space.

To me it looks like the next Musk’s grift. Remember Mars? Have you heard about it recently? He threw it to the Internet and everyone got excited for a minute. Then nerds did quick math and it didn’t make any sense. And so everyone forgot about Mars. This is the same. Hype everyone up for a week or two to inflate stock before the merger/purchase/IPO/whatever. That is all.

pointlessone··on Data centers in space makes no sense
DGX H200 is 10,2 kW. So that like 10 of them. Or only 80 H200. Doesn’t sound like a big data center. More like a server room.

ISS radiators are huge 13.6x3.1 m. Each radiates 35 kW. So you need 3 of them to have your 100 kW target. They are also filled with gas that needs pumping so not exactly a passive system and as such can break down for a whole lot of reasons.

You also need to collect that power so you need about the same amount of power coming from solar panels. ISS solar array wings are 35x12 m and can generate about 31 kW of power. So we’ll need at least 3 of them. BTW each weighs a ton, a literal metric ton.

It hardly seems feasible. Huge infrastructure costs for small AI server rooms in space.

pointlessone··on Data centers in space makes no sense
While it’s true that there are no floods or earthquakes in space it’s not exactly a safe place to be. Radiation and cosmic rays become a much greater threat. Shielding provided by the atmosphere would have to be replaced.

You also underestimate the cooling problem. The fact that space is cold doesn’t mean it’s easy to cool things off in space. On earth the main cooling strategy is to transfer heat through direct contact and move the hot stuff away. Be it air or water, as you mentioned. In space your only option is to radiate heat away. And that’s while half of you is under intense sunlight.

I think you also undersell the thread of warfare in space. Sure, a guy with Molotov can’t get you space data center but we’ve had satellite shot down. So maybe not every war is a threat but, say China or Russia (or other space-faring nation) could take care of a satellite if absolutely needed.

National seizures are also still a threat. If only being outside national borders was such a great defense we’d see some data centers in the sea by now.

So being in space is immune to some of the known problems but also comes with a whole lot of novel issues, not solved at scale yet. And so far I haven’t seen any sufficiently detailed proposed solutions to even consider the trade of known problems with readily available solutions for new issues with lots of unknowns.

pointlessone··on Thomas Piketty: 'The reality is the US is losing control of the world'
> Without entering (and winning) some kind of major conflict, this was always going to happen.

If only there was a conflict somewhere with a perieved superpower, maybe a nuclear country or something that would be relatively easy to win without even entering into a direct altercation. Oh, wait!

America could’ve easily won the war in Ukraine by just ging away a bit more weapons, specifically long range missiles. It could even just tell European countries to give their long rhange missiles in exchange for a resupply for some plausible deniability. It could’ve been a bit more generous with intelligence.

Unfortunately, America elected Trump. A person who doesn’t believe in anything that doesn’t directly concern him. If it doesn’t benefit (or hurt) him personally it might as well not exist. Which make it easy to sway his foreign policy. Russia is actively trying to buy him and he thinks it’s great. It’s going to be a very fast decline of American influence as more and more countries around the world will see that it takes very little to buy an american president, allegedly the most powerful person in the world. And if any petty dictator can buy him, what worth is his power?

pointlessone··on The human only public license
I get the sentiment and it’s a fair shot at license cosplay but it ain’t gonna hold.

No definitions. What is AI for the purpose of this license? What is a natural person?

At some point the text makes distinction between AI, ML, and autonomous agents. Is my RSS reader an autonomous agent? It is an agent as defined by, say, HTTP spec or W3C. And it’s autonomous.

Author also mentions that any MIT software could use this instead. It most certainly could not. This is very much not an open source license and is not compatible with any FLOSS license.

I don’t see it taking off in any meaningful way given how much effort is required to ensure compliance. It also seems way to easy to sabotage deployment of such software by maliciously directing AI agents at such deployments. Heck, even at public source code. Say, OP publishes something under this license, an AI slurps it from the canonical repo. What OP’s gonna do?

It pulls data from Amazon and so is limited to availability there. For instance, the most expensive MacBook in there is $5839 while on the Apple Store you can max out at $7349 (hardware only). I suspact same goes for other manufacturers. So if you want to blow ungodly amount of money you’d need to do some extra research.

pointlessone··on Ask HN: Which Open Source License to Choose for a Python Language Server
If you’re seriously considering monetization I suggest you not choose a FLOSS license.

You don’t have to use a FLOSS license to get most of the things that come with a typical FLOSS project.

I suggest you consider BTPL [1] or a PolyForm license [2].
