pofilat··on Is the Lean Startup Dead?
And was allegedly plagiarized from QDOS.

pofilat··on Is the Lean Startup Dead?
Parent is downvoted but I recall it as an epigram (and I agree) but can't find references discussing it.

Users wouldn't tolerate WordStar and Pac-Man today.

pofilat··on An effort to bring computer science to all US high schools
Priests felt the same way when the masses learned to read.
pofilat··on Logic Theorist
That's interesting.... + and * theorems correspond between logic and arithmetic, but taking ^ as implication generates theorems that are true in logic but not in arithmetic.

(The truth table of implication is clearly different from binary exxponentiation)

pofilat··on Logic Theorist
Does natural deduction scale beyond first-order propositional logic with a small number of variables? It seems to me that it would have bad exponential blowup, checking all the cases.
pofilat··on Simple, correct, fast: in that order
My calculator watch worked perfectly for 50 years on that "wrong" assumption.
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
You seem to be confusing Zuckerberg with Facebook, Inc, and ignoring that Musk is both 13 years older than Zuckerberg, and that bringing 4 billion people onto the internet is "interesting". Musk cares about sci-fi things like going to Mars by himself, and making luxury cars in the crowded EV market; Zuck cares about doing something interesting for billions of people on Earth.
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
What do you think Zuck does in private? We learned about what Kalanick did, and Cuban and Trump make no secret of their lifestyles; but heard no such things about Zuck.
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
You can't walk into McDonald's and buy an introduction to Silicon Valley investors, and a depth chart of Harvard CS grads employees. Facebook was one of a dozen competing social networks, and they won largely because of Zuck's connections to capital and talent.
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
In the article, "boring" just means poor. Zuck has his sins, but anyone who thinks Zuck is "boring" is crazy. The guy learned Mandarin as an adult, to make a business deal. That's more hustle than selling hot dogs at the stadium.
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
How is he different from the others? Changing the world by selling products at a loss and making it up by avoiding sales tax?
pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
> he's still probably one of the ten smartest people in the tech industry.

That's absurd.

pofilat··on Why Are Young Billionaires So Boring?
Palmetto is the highest achieving public school in Miami-Dade county. It's no Bill Gates's Lakeside School or Zuck's Exeter, but it's where everyone in Dade County public schools who cares about academic excellence sends their kids if they can afford the nearby real estate.

What does China have to lose?
pofilat··on Nissan Admits Internal Emissions-Test Results were Falsified
EVs use regional power, including hydro, solar, and wind. A significant improvement over gasoline.

EVs charge mostly at night, so the balance out daytime A/C use to produce a more stable power draw.

pofilat··on Nissan Admits Internal Emissions-Test Results were Falsified
Increasing emmissions standards make EVs more attractive. The incentives are aligned.
pofilat··on Nissan Admits Internal Emissions-Test Results were Falsified
If you use the car the way tests use the car, the performance will be the same. The trick is you can't complete your daily driving needs by driving the way the test does.
pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
Yeah, it's not a "cutting edge security feature", it's quite the opposite -- it's decades old Luddite security: "unplug the device".
pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
A military invasion is performed by the military. No one here is blaming the servicemembers.
pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
Google is building consumer Android phones with Huawei, not weapons.

Why do I care what color are the jackboots?

Why do you say China is wearing jackboots?

pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
Why do you think the tech in question is for classifying militants vs civilians, vs just classifying humans vs trees?

AI wishful thinking is not helpful.

The USA employees are also there just to support the main business. So?

Some offices only exist because an influential individual wanted to live in that location.

Do you think Google is largely in Mountain View because they have a deep allegiance to Mountain View, or because that's where they can get lots of employees and (historically) cheap real estate?

pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
Green joined Google a few years ago. michaelochurch will explain how the foxes had long since taken over.

How is drone warfare keeping us safe?
pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
FDA didn't claim the advertised medicine was counterfeit, only that some companies in the industry ship counterfeits.

Anyway, yeah, I'd assume that the individuals who don't want to build for the military don't want to build for counterfeit pharmacies. Other individuals would do both. Google has many employees.

pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
So? The Soviet Union collapsed under its own weight a few years later. The (negative) dividends of US militarization are still being paid.
pofilat··on Google Engineers Refused to Build Security Tool to Win Military Contracts
The US won WII not because our military was super powerful (though that helped), but because most of Germany's technical geniuses defected or deported or were deposed/killed. Chinese in large part flee China when they can. Foreigners aren't knocking down walls to join China.

The value of (relative) freedom made the US powerful. If the US becomes just like the bad parts of China or Russia, who cares of China or Russia come out on top instead of the US? They will have already won the war of ideas.

Why aren't any representatives from the 99.9% of humanity invited to these meetings? Many (most?) would prefer a more democratic sort of world leadership.

Jared Cohen is the driver behind YouTube censorship and making Google/Internet an arm of the US government's propaganda effort. Schmidt has been trying to push his way into world politics as an unelected guru for about a decade.
