poetril··on Vercel Is Down
All three of our production sites are down. Been going in and out for the last 20mins.
poetril··on Moments in Chromecast's history
Looks like I'll be moving towards Roku, most of my friends use it and I've been using a Chromecast because I was gifted on. But the experience w/ Roku seems to be superior to Chromecast nowadays anyways.
poetril··on Solving Path of Exile Item Crafting with Reinforcement Learning
Wow. Absolutely incredible. I have a truly shameful amount of time playing PoE, crafting by jumping between craftofexile, poedb, spreadsheets, etc. I was always curious if something like this was possible and you’ve gone and done it. Fantastic read as well, thank you for sharing.
poetril··on Zed on Linux Is Here
It comes down to using the vim extension and making use of the context it adds when setting key binds. Both in settings and keybind json files you set commands for certain vim modes, or bind native VSCode commands to your leader. Zed does almost the same but with no defined leader key so you just have to be more specific about the command and the context they are executed in.
poetril··on Zed on Linux Is Here
I've kept my neovim config, vscode, and zed configs in parity for a while now. To the point that the keybinds and behaviors are the same (or as simliar as they can be) across all three. In my personal experience zed is eating into the time I use vscode, but not really touching neovim as much. It really has come a long way, and I'm excited I'll be able to use it on my Linux machine without having to jump through hoops.
poetril··on There is still the need for a better Goodreads alternative
I’ve been using StoryGraph for a long time, since it was a PWA. It’s come a long way and the developer is great at listening to feedback and taking suggestion. Highly recommend it
poetril··on Proton launches its own version of Google Docs
This is exactly why I like it. I understand it won't be for everyone, but it does everything I need for daily use. Mainly mail + calendar, plus drive for some occasional file sharing/upload. The VPN works fine for what I need, and I still use a separate password manager.
poetril··on Making the Kinopio source code public
Oh wow I had no idea he cofounded Glitch. Also very cool use of his product for the interview
poetril··on Ask HN: Do you have a visual note taking app you enjoy?
I highly recommend and used Kinopio (hope I spelled that right) for quite sometime. There really isn’t anything like it.

But to keep a similar system between work and personal I used Obsidan + Excalidraw (inside obsidian). IMO it gives the best of both worlds.

poetril··on Ask HN: How would you remove Reddit.com from all search results?
+1 for Kagi. Not only are the results consistently better, but the ability to tailor the search results to my needs are incredible. Honestly couldn’t imagine going back to Google after using it
poetril··on Helix-gpui: A simple GUI for the Helix editor
I’ve been splitting time recently between Zed, VSCode, and Neovim. Zed has come along way, its native vim integration is top notch. It ties in its core editor features and enables them via vim commands rather than offering a true “vim experience”, which is exactly what I’m looking for but certainly won’t be for everyone.
poetril··on Ask HN: Have you migrated to Proton mail/calendar/pass/etc.? How was it?
I use proton as my daily driver for email, calendar, and vpn. Overall the entire suite gets a 6-7/10 for me. They all do exactly what they need to, calendar has been improving a lot, and has a dedicated iOS app nowadays which is a great improvement.

I do not use Proton drive or pass so I can't comment on those. But the email, cal, and vpn do exactly what I need them to.

poetril··on How Google fights Invidious (a privacy YouTube Front end)
Many of the creators I follow upload first, or alongside nebula. I’ve been using it to try and reduce my YouTube watch time with great success.
poetril··on Ask HN: Looking for lightweight personal blogging platform
+1 for Astro. Super easy, with great documentation and dev ex.
poetril··on Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too
Oh interesting, I wasn't aware. I'll have to try my hand at beta access, and try it out. I enjoyed my time with it on Mac. But use too many different OS's to daily drive it.
poetril··on Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too
It really is painful that out of the chromium browsers I'd choose Edge in an instant if they just would remove or allow me to remove the bloatware they ship with. I currently use Brave, which thankfully lets me disable all the crypto nonsense they ship with. I could see myself using Arc if they end up releasing a Linux/Windows port.
poetril··on Show HN: Heynote – A dedicated scratchpad for developers
This is awesome! I currently use numpad[0] for this, but would much prefer a local app. I would love to switch but the only thing holding me back is lack of Vim support. Are there any plans to add Vim keymap in the future?

poetril··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
I mostly read fantasy, but had some personal favorites this year:

The Blacktongue Theif - Christopher Buehlman

Kings of the Wyld * Bloody Rose - Nicholas Eames

Farseer Trilogy - Hobin Hobb

poetril··on I Won't Use Next.js
This is largely personal opinion as someone who uses Next at work all day. But Svelte/SvelteKit or Astro are my personal goto's/favorites outside of Next. Both are robust enough to handle pretty much anything you throw at them, add a complier to help catch errors before build time, and most importantly have incredible developer experiences.
poetril··on I Won't Use Next.js
I'm not really sure where the comment on Vercel platform lock-in is coming from. Personally I've deployed Next apps on Cloudflare Pages/Netlify, and I have multiple Next apps at work are all deployed via AWS codebuild or Github Actions (all hosted on AWS).

The process is very straightforward and requires little to no extra steps when compared to Vercel.

poetril··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of Googl just punting any products of theirs at any time?
Last year I finally made the push to de-google as much as possible. I dropped gmail/google calendar in exchange for ProtonMail. Replaced google photos/drive with Backblaze (there is a manual step now). Moved all my domains from Google Domains to Cloudflare (thankfully). The only tether I still have to Google is my YouTube account. Other than that I can say my life has been entirely de-coupled from Google. I simply do not trust Google anymore. Between their history of randomly killing projects and awful consumer support its just not worth it.
poetril··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
Something like this is exactly what I've been looking for! Barebones, easy to use, and snappy. I find most other encounter builders are way to bloated for my purposes. But this seems to strike a really nice middle ground of convenience with all the right features.
poetril··on Ask HN: WHich tutorial/book to explain how CSS Layout work under the hood?
I've been working with html/css for nearly a decade and still reference [0] this article from time to time. Best explanation of how css layout algorithms out there.

poetril··on Ask HN: How do you find high quality mobile games?
All of my favorite high quality mobile games are desktop games that got ported. The ones I play the most are [1]Baba is you, [2]Into the Breach (requires a Netflix account), [3]20 Minutes Till Dawn, and [4]Vampire Survivors. Granted I'm not a mobile power gamer by any means, I usually only pull these out when forced to wait an extended period of time for something.

poetril··on Ask HN: Does anybody not use an adblocker?
I don't have an adblocker on my machine at work, trying to keep chrome as barebones as possible. On the off chance I click on an article posted in slack its always shocking to see how riddled with ad's the modern web is.
poetril··on Next.js App Router Update
At my current gig we support two Next apps (both on the pages router) and are currently in the very early stages of building a new Next app using the app router. While we are very excited about the technology, adoption has been slowed by a few things.

1. Server components have poor support for certain (non tailwind) css solutions. We had hoped to use vanilla-extract as its syntacticly similar to other css-in-js solutions, but ran into issues with HMR completely falling apart locally if the page contained a NextImage. We ended up falling back to good ol’ fashion sass modules.

2. As some other commenters mentioned googling for support somewhat consistently lands you on the opposite routers docs and while it’s somewhat obvious to tell where you are its still missable if you are moving quick.

All that to say I’m personally, _sorta_ burnt on Next and have found a ton of joy using svelte + sveltekit for my personal/hobby projects.

poetril··on Ask HN: Where are you moving your Google domains to?
I moved all my domains from google domains -> CloudFlare a few years ago. I haven’t had any issues other than CloudFlare is missing support for some tlds, mainly “.dev”
poetril··on Ask HN: How can self taught developers find work?
I’ll tell you what I did years ago and what I advised friends who have broken into the field. Take a dev adjacent job and after some time make an internal move. I’ve had two friends start doing software support and after 12-18 months made the jump to a dev role. Having first hand knowledge of the product you’ll be developing is a huge leg up, and companies often prefer hiring internally.
poetril··on Show HN: I built a web app for learning Vim from the browser as a 17-year-old
The site looks great and I always love to see some Svelte love. But the "Sign in with Google" is a deal breaker for me. Also seems strange to charge $15 for this when so many free Vim resources exist.
poetril··on Ask HN: What does your WFH day/routine look like?
According to my Microsofts Viva, at my last job I spent roughly 40% of my time in meetings. Which was soul sucking, almost no work got done due to the overhead of attending / preparing for the meetings.

At my current role (checking Viva again), I average 6.2hr of meetings each week. The difference that has made is astounding. I'm much more excited to engage with work.
