pocksuppet··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
The parts talk to each other and verify each other's serial numbers and refuse to work if they don't match, and none of the documents you referenced exist.

Then let the "owners" and repair shops ask questions, mandate accurate replies, and "we don't know" is a valid answer if and only if you actually don't know. If you are found saying "we don't know" when you actually do know, mandatory punishment is one hundred times the purchase price of the machinery unit in question.

The conservative position is always whatever benefits conservatives at this moment. Back when they supported a free market, a freer market benefitted them. When market regulations benefitted them, they supported a more regulated market.

Didn't help the non-spying TV market.
pocksuppet··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Your argument is basically "humanity can't be destroyed by anything, because I said so"
pocksuppet··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
Something close enough to this already happened, at the end of 2019. So we know what the outcome of a bioweapon will be: half the population declares that the bioweapon doesn't exist, avoiding it is "woke" and then goes out and infects themselves on purpose. Now imagine if it killed everyone who got infected instead of just a few percent.

How do you know they weren't? Is it impossible to research any more guided rockets? Do we know what they're doing PhDs for - in China?

From this double standard, we can infer the country is one that the US would have a double standard in favour of. That narrows it down to two countries.

That is how apps work in 2016 onwards (the last decade).
pocksuppet··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
The addition is much cheaper than the memory access. The register pressure is worse than the addition. The size reduction of the index (versus the pointer) and resulting cache pressure reduction can outweigh the register pressure and the addition if you are storing many indices.

What is the benefit of having a boundary?
pocksuppet··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
That is called pointer arithmetic on the base

That's the same as any other index or member access. It's myThreadLocalBlock->myVariable.

thread_local is an example of something else unusual though - a struct linker as seen in https://yosefk.com/blog/i-want-a-struct-linker.html and it even supports dynamic loading.

Solution: Be nice to nice merchants and be shitty to merchants you hate.

I don't know if you're aware, but there was a whole lot of controversy around Central Bank Digital Currencies a few years ago. Mainly because the government can instantly see every transaction you do and will use it to decide if you're a terrorist or not, and they have a terrorist catching quota. They can also instantly block your account. And if such system is available, the government will phase out cash.
pocksuppet··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
I thought the main selling point was that they work almost anywhere. Whereas my EFTPOS card only works in Australia, my Girocard only works in Germany and my Pix account only works in Brazil.
pocksuppet··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
Visa and Mastercard are the ones setting the rules. They are the ones who decided that the fee can't be added on to the purchase price. If your credit card added 1% to every transaction from your perspective, but the competing bank's card only added 0.3%, you would have competition pressure.
pocksuppet··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
It's the worst case before they get penalized. I've had worse times with Mastercard and Visa. It's really not a big deal if one in a thousand payments, you sit by the card reader for 30 seconds before it says "please try again".

That is mental illness. It doesn't imply that a virus took hold of your brain cells. It can be inability to cope with the real world. I suspect most of us will go through it at some point in our lives.
pocksuppet··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
And the best way to get people to let you do bad things, is to offer them something good, that uses the same mechanism. If I want to MITM the whole internet, what better way than offering free caching and bot blocking?

I even get to charge the bots extra to bypass the block, and then charge the customers extra to block the bots that are paying extra to not be blocked!

You don't pay with money, you pay with the curses^H^H^H^H^H MITM.

Money laundering isn't even a real thing. It's an excuse for the government to arrest people who are linked to people who are linked to people who they don't like.

In the Netherlands the Nazis were able to exterminate Jews much more thoroughly than they had in Germany, because the Netherlands kept such meticulous records of the name and address of every Jew.

And everyone else, but the Nazis were after the Jews.

Has that ever worked in history? I seem to recall that every other fascist government was dealt with a different way.

It's not forced charity (for them), it is restricted charity (for you).

You wouldn't operate a food bank and give 1000 cans of beans to someone who plans to throw them through the windows of cars. You only give the beans to people who you think are going to eat the beans. Same with software. Free software is given to make the world better, not to make it worse.
