pockmarked19··on US government agency argues that money isn't property–so it can take yours
Passports are usually considered to be the property of the issuing government. Some of them even say as much inside.
pockmarked19··on OpenAI O3-Mini
YC usually says “a startup is the point in your life where tricks stop working”.

Sam Altman is somehow finding this out now, the hard way.

Most paying customers will find out within minutes whether the models can serve their use case, a benchmark isn’t going to change that except for media manipulation (and even that doesn’t work all that well, since journalists don’t really know what they are saying and readers can tell).

pockmarked19··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
You’ve subtly confused “less accurate” and “smarter” in your argument. In other words you’ve replaced the benchmark of representing the base data with the benchmark of reasoning score.

Then, you’ve asserted that was the original claim.

Sneaky! But that’s how “arguments” on HN are “won”.

pockmarked19··on YC Graveyard: 821 inactive Y Combinator startups
I might regret saying this here, if it causes a negative change, but I find that a lot of the text materials YC and startup school have retain a lot of PG-era advice and can be a goldmine of wisdom. Most of the negative influence of post-PG operation has been on the video and audio content marketing side of things (and of course, the accelerator itself). Perhaps it is just harder to have certain things come across as sincere in text format.
pockmarked19··on YC Graveyard: 821 inactive Y Combinator startups
> The problem is that hypothetical VC fund will attract no rational limited partners with money because they know that startup founders can just take their invested dollars with no payback protection.

YC famously claims it is not a VC fund because it invests their own money, they wouldn’t have this problem.

pockmarked19··on AI slop, suspicion, and writing back
Why care whether something is AI slop or human slop? It’s not worth reading in either case.

The arguments presented here look suspiciously like the arguments scribe classes of old used against the masses learning to read and write.

Seems like we’ve gotten to the point where sloppy writers are worse than LLMs and assume that all “meticulous” writers are LLMs. The only convincing “tell” I have ever heard tell of: characters such as smart quotes, but even those can just be a result of writing in a non-standard or “fancy” editor first. I’ve even seen people say that em dashes are indicative, I guess those people neither care about good writing nor know that em dashes are as easy as option + shift + hyphen on a Mac.

pockmarked19··on The FizzBuzz that did not get me the job
If this is what people imagine when they hear of whiteboard interviews, no wonder they hate them! What this was and what a technical interview is supposed to be could not be any more different. This interview reminds me of some experiences I've had in my early career, and now I know better than to spend more than 5 minutes with this kind of nonsense.

The easiest tell is the adversarial nature of it, but the moment the "max of 30 lines" slide was revealed I'd be out. Scratch that - I'd be out when I saw there were slides. The point of a technical interview isn't to repeatedly try and throw caltrops in front of someone, and a company that doesn't know that is unlikely to be a great place to work.

pockmarked19··on Crushing Jira tickets is a party trick, not a path to impact
Spotify is one of the worst at innovation. They pushed out the team that made discover weekly by downplaying their pioneering work while executives focused on “health integrations”, and they’ve now laid off some of their most creative people, including the guy who worked on everynoise.com.

I would guess that bloat at Spotify is a direct result of empire building by the numbers.

pockmarked19··on Crushing Jira tickets is a party trick, not a path to impact
I agree with what John Carmack said about that.

pockmarked19··on A QR code that sends you to a different destination – lenticular and adversarial
You don’t need any of this if you control the app doing the scanning (or the website/app handling the result).
pockmarked19··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney, who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Thanks, that's interesting to know! Although my comment was addressed to willmadden, and I think they just do not know what jurisdiction means.
pockmarked19··on I am (not) a failure: Lessons learned from six failed startup attempts
It’s important to think not in terms of success or failure, but in terms of philosophy and mistakes. If you’re focused on the outcome there isn’t much you can improve on, the reasons for failure are many. Mistakes on the other hand stem from flaws in your philosophy, which you can readily revise. In a lot of the cases presented here, the mistake that stands out is working with the wrong people.
pockmarked19··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney, who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Are you saying aliens are not subject to US jurisdiction while here? Like "sovereign citizens"? That's what it seems like you're saying.
pockmarked19··on Using your Apple device as an access card in unsupported systems
Seriously. Better to tape something to your phone at that point!
pockmarked19··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
This. It is not back in stores.
pockmarked19··on Ask HN: How can I realistically change careers?
When you ask people online for advice, keep an ear to the ground and an eye to the door.

There isn’t, and will never be, a substitute for thinking for yourself.

pockmarked19··on Binary modding a water dispenser to save me from pressing a button (2021)
Correct, though you can essentially edit the 'decompiled' code directly at low level (then put it back into a binary), and for some languages this is even tolerable e.g. languages which compile to CIL.

OP didn't do this, because as they said: "I don’t like writing assembly". Although what they did is arguably harder...which maybe was the point! After all they could've just hooked up an MCU to proxy the button press for a given duration, which would've taken a lot less time.

pockmarked19··on Before Squid Game, there was Battle Royale
Squid game reminded me a lot more of Liar game (the many variants) than a battle royale, though no one dies in the latter.

I especially like the “minority rule” game.

pockmarked19··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
Hey! Thanks for asking what I would do to make it better. First, of course, the karma system has to go - scoring can still exist without being visible and therefore pressuring people to be performative. In addition to that, I would adjust the rankings to show not only the most popular posts but also some of the most controversial ones (controversy being defined as least agreement among voters). These are changes that will alienate many, however, and unlikely to be incorporated by a platform that amount to a content marketing tool for an investment group.
pockmarked19··on Warren Buffett is no longer donating his money at death to the Gates Foundation
> pile of cash just sits there doing nothing

What pile of cash?

These are shares. Buffett and Munger have taken great pains to ensure that capital allocation will be done well at Berkshire after their death.

There’s no “pile of cash sitting there doing nothing”.

pockmarked19··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
> people generally like Kagi and generally dislike Google

The reason the words "on hacker news" is missing from that statement is the karma system. I am describing echo chambers.

pockmarked19··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
Say something positive about kagi, receive karma.

Say something negative about google, receive karma.

No place with this kind of system should be relied on for veracious claims.

pockmarked19··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
Depends on the impact. In some cases you do, so a class action lawsuit gets some traction.
pockmarked19··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
I imagine governments tend to be the same way, though my only direct experience here is that I don't report anything and nothing bad happens. The funny thing to me is that the discovery of these issues is not what triggers retaliation, but the audacity of reporting them.

Were I personally impacted, I would just submit information to the media as an anonymous whistleblower to get it fixed.

pockmarked19··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
That’s just how colleges are. I once reported to my alma mater that a somewhat obscure (but obviously public) link seemed to trigger the download of a zip of student details for no discernible reason (I think it was a WIP site), and they immediately threatened to call the FBI on me. I just sort of laughed it off, but I decided that was the last time I was going to initiate any sort of contact with them if I didn’t absolutely have to.

Which is the policy I followed when I found that they had stored one of their LDAP admin passwords in a world readable file on the CS servers.

pockmarked19··on My Favorite Book on AI
My favorite book on AI is Sutton’s “reinforcement learning”. Looking just at the url I knew this would be some pop-sci tripe but leaving this comment here in case people want something other than what they can tout on twitter/X.
pockmarked19··on The Evaporative Cooling Effect in Social Networks (2010)
That’s a different discussion, because this one has the added benefit of being from a cornell.edu domain! /s

The submission here is also more of a discussion of that post, so this thread would be a discussion of a discussion, not direct comments on the article.

pockmarked19··on Meta is killing off its AI-powered Instagram and Facebook profiles
There are wise people here, they are just lurkers though (wisely).
pockmarked19··on Parasitic worms 'manipulate' mantises onto asphalt roads, say researchers
It does.

If I come into the room and stab you with a steak knife every time you drink, and sometimes even if you only think about drinking, you will definitely panic when drinking is brought up in the future, after some time.

Not sure what's wrong with you that you cannot empathize.

pockmarked19··on Most people don't care about quality
TFA is HN parlance to refer to the article. It’s not really profane, some people expand it to “the fine article”, but in my usage it has meaning independent of its expansion, akin to how lol does not actually refer to laughing out loud.
