pnutjam··on Systemd by Example (2021)
Exactly, and there are still alot of old school "cron" users who don't touch the better "anacron" processes. I hate managing that stuff. Systemd > Anacron > Cron

"A lot of those jobs remain unchanged, with a college degree now required as essentially an empty gatekeeping step."

This is simply untrue. Huge numbers of data entry and switchboard style jobs have disappeared due to automation. Just grab "9 to 5" and see how much paperwork went into jobs before computers.

pnutjam··on US Cities Could Verge on Becoming Ghost Towns by 2100, Study Finds
You're wrong, there was a large financial incentive to abandon neighborhoods once non-whites started living there. The racism caused housing sell-offs, amplified by the crashing home prices. People quickly learned that their home value would plummet when the neighborhood became integrated, so they rushed to be the first ones out; while values where still high. This, of course, exacerbated the problem. Racism is at least a good 70 to 90 percent of the problem.

Renters pay property taxes. I know I do.

You still haven't answered me, but I'll leave this for you consideration. Sub in racist for anti-semite. I believe this applies to you

"Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past." Jean-Paul Sartre

Well you didn't answer my question. But I'm going to assume you're hinting at the false equivalency conservative line to trot out about prejudice against poor it rural people.

Prejudice is rooted in lack of knowledge and unfamiliarity. Racism is familiar and has it's own body of knowledge; all wrong, but vehemently defended. Racists try to build their own narrative.

pnutjam··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
Bingo, I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like I can't start in the middle and it's impossible to track back to the first story or there are just way too many so I just give up and don't watch any. They did that with Pirates of the Caribbean first... I blinked and there were 5 of them.

pnutjam··on Supreme Court hears a case that experts say could wreak havoc on the tax code
Certainly, this is true; but it's not really relevant to this conversation. Taxes are necessary and this is pretty solid, settled law.

pnutjam··on YouTube blames ad blockers for slow load times, not the browser
Streaming video has been terrible for this. I miss the days when you could easily pause and ff with a traditional DVR system. Now, even the "DVR" systems will revert to streaming instead of recorded items and the ads become un-skippable.
pnutjam··on Windows 11 is amazing, I left Linux
Pretty sure it's inheriting it from the xbox since I use a family domain and even though I created a local Windows account it wants to link the MS account.
pnutjam··on Windows 11 is amazing, I left Linux
My kids windows computers suddenly activated Family mode so I need to log onto my MS account to authorize absolutely everything; but only in Edge, not Chrome. What's the point. It's very frustrating. I'll probably switch it to Linux for the one that uses Google classroom at school.

I read this as just another way for privilege to shut down discourse. "You're just offended."

pnutjam··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
-- I happen to know exactly what I’m talking about - you right now can look for an item on Amazon and see “this product is available at a lower price with <slower shipping>” Sure, on Amazon. Not other platforms.

I'm not going to bother explaining further, but thanks for confirming you don't understand the issue. It's not my job to educate you.

pnutjam··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
So you don't even know what the article is discussing. Amazon is killing competition and increasing costs to consumers.
pnutjam··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
so my (theoretical) company that optimizes to keep these costs lower shouldn't be able to compete on those fees?
pnutjam··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Why is that relevant?
pnutjam··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
I read that, on average, Amazon collects 50% of the cost in fees; from sellers.
