pnutjam··on Cells are swapping their mitochondria. What does this mean for our health?
https://umdf.org/ Great organization working on Mitochondrial diseases. I have a family member with a diagnosed Mito disease.
pnutjam··on Why I run FreeBSD for my home servers
On mine I run calibre, jellyfin, openbooks, and Samba to share files out. All my other computers backup to my home server and it has a process to deal with incremental and offsite (btrfs snapshots and b2).

I also use it from my other computers via ssh to access git, irc, keepass, and whatever else tickles my fancy.

pnutjam··on Waymos crash less than human drivers
cherry picked routes in actual cities.
pnutjam··on Waymos crash less than human drivers
They also have way less roads, America has 4.1 million miles of roads and the avg European country has something like 80,000.

American's have to drive and they have to drive further.

pnutjam··on In Jail Without a Lawyer: How a Texas Town Fails Poor Defendants
Sure Jan, they can just shrug off close to a 100 years of colonization like it never happened. It's not even been 100 years since it officially ended.

pnutjam··on Teach, Don't Tell (2013)
Some places still have very good tech teams, but it still requires working between the teams. (EX from a company I worked with: https://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?t=30365)

The writers can't do their work without input from the technical side and the time for that is often not avaliable.

I know I've been punished for taking time to push ideas to tech writers. Not only does it slow me down in other places, it often gets swept away as unnecessary changes because upstream Sr techs disagree.

For example, when I modify ssl configs, I alway reference the files with soft-links. This makes it so you don't need to modify the config files and simplifies keeping old and new certs so you can flip back during the overlap period you should be providing to test. I try to avoid editing production files by hand whenever possible because in my experience it introduces the possibility to create errors.

I rewrote some docs extending alot of areas with example commands showing how to test things, with explanations that fleshed out the previous quick and dirty documentation. I also modified the method from copy and replace certs, edit files, restart service; to copy files, replace or create soft-link, restart service.

Upstream approvers trashed the whole thing because the thought it was unnecessary and disagreed with me about manually editing config files.

pnutjam··on Generate impressive-looking terminal output, look busy when stakeholders walk by
Nobody is focused on work in the office, it's politics and coaster culture everywhere. WFH allows me to my work efficiently and quickly. I don't need to look busy because I'm delivering.
pnutjam··on Peer-to-peer file transfers in the browser
KDE connect solves most of these problems.
pnutjam··on Another Conflict Between Privacy Laws and Age Authentication–Murphy v Confirm ID
Login.gov could provide this in the US, but it's only allowed for federal sites.
pnutjam··on Buy Infowars for the Memes
He's just muddying the waters in bad faith, ignore his "plausible" arguments because as you're demonstrating, they aren't. They are constructed to appear plausible and waste your time.

The only winning move is not to play.

pnutjam··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
How about the AMA?
pnutjam··on DOGE Takeover of USDS Allows Them to Surveil the US Government from the Inside
You have to pass a "public trust" clearance for alot of Gov departments. They vary in intensity. For example, GSA and USDA are both pretty quick and easy. Dept of Ed, treasury, and IRS are way more in-depth.
pnutjam··on The first release of OpenVox, the OSS implementation of Puppet
Puppet is a project to implement. Once it's implemented, it's great. It requires dedicated infrastructure to work properly. Ansible is much easier to step into slowly if you don't have time to implement a full deployment project before you can use it. You can start without dedicated infrastructure and add later if you want more centralized management.
pnutjam··on Making an intersection unsafe for pedestrians to save seconds for drivers
If they get that close to me, the car is getting kicked or slapped to elicit a reaction from the driver.
pnutjam··on First live birth using Fertilo procedure that matures eggs outside the body
Imagine a world where anybody can gestate a baby in a tank. It would be a boon to older couples, same sex couples, and many others.

What happens to the inevitable baby who's parent's die before they can be decanted? They will stack up over time since who wants someone else's baby when you can get your own so easily.

This will also be abused by some jacka## like Musk who wants to build a labor force for something distasteful. Imagine a Mars colonization effort with exclusively young people who were raised in a sealed environment and don't know anything that was not fed to them.

pnutjam··on Torpedo juice: Legendary, illegal WWII liquor drunk in Alaska and the world
Look for a copy of Zinky Boys. It shows the conditions for Soviet soldiers during the Afghan war, I think it hasn't changed much.

pnutjam··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
My daughter has a genetic condition and needed an IEP. The middle school she attended would not give her an evaluation until we indicated we knew they were legally required to evaluate her and they should consider this an official request. All my previous requests were rebuffed as they tried to steer her towards a 504 plan (504 is not legally binding). I had to pay to have her evaluated by a Pediatric Neuropsychologist (about $500, despite my excellent American Insurance). He diagnosed ADHD and referred to a Neurologist who found nothing, but referred to an MRI, which found stroke damage, then we were referred to a geneticist who identified her mitochondrial disease and put us into a Pediatric Developmental office. Finally we got some resources that helped us navigate the school issues to get her IEP. It was so much time, money, and effort.
pnutjam··on Some Other America, One I Do Not Know
From your link.

Although US teen births are declining, the US teen birth rate is higher than in many other high-income countries.

pnutjam··on Some Other America, One I Do Not Know
He's right. Violence is as American as apple pie and teen pregnancy.

pnutjam··on California's most neglected group of students: the gifted ones
It's not a question of funding it's a question of administrative competence.

This is also funding related. Yes, it takes time to turn things around and there needs to be oversight. No, withholding funds from failing schools wont' work. It's like beating people until they are happy.

pnutjam··on California's most neglected group of students: the gifted ones
counterpoint: https://ctmirror.org/2024/09/29/cant-read-high-school-ct-har...

America has some of the best schools, but also some of the worst. Engaging kids doesn't mean pushing them to academic heights. We should be working on engaging kids in all the facets of life instead of pushing sports and STEM.
