pmulard··on What I learned trying to classify abortion access across the rich world
In the United States, if I am about to die and need donated organs, blood, bone marrow, etc., you are not required to donate your body to me. This even extends to dead bodies, which is why organ donation after death is opt-in.

Knowing this, why should a mother be forced to give up her body to another (the baby)?

pmulard··on Apple Unveils M2
I have to disagree on this. Microsoft has gone out of their way to support their legacy software on older systems, and it's a huge reason companies in the IT and IoT sector have stayed with them all these years.
pmulard··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
It's even better. You can send yourself to cool places :)
pmulard··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
Travel nurses serve a need, like if another nurse gets injured or has a child, and they will need to be temporarily replaced.
pmulard··on Interview questions to ask your interviewer
I've been keeping a list of interview questions in my personal docs, but just uploaded them to a repo once I saw this post.

Feel free to check them out. They also include questions to ask the recruiter. I hope they can be of use.

pmulard··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Just curious, but what career did you switch to? Also, congrats on finding more happiness :)
pmulard··on In 2019 40% of San Francisco traffic fatalities are from left turns
I'm honestly surprised there aren't more traffic fatalities in San Francisco, especially with how many pedestrians, ride sharing drivers, and narrow streets there are.

Coming from the mid-west, there are status quo norms (laws?) that baffle me:

- Cars can park all down the street, even right up on the crosswalks at either end. It is incredibly hard to see people trying to use the cross walks, when they are behind the cars. Cars parking that close is illegal in many streets where I'm from.

- The amount of cross walks in the middle of high traffic streets (not intersections) that rely solely on visibility between the driver and pedestrian. Again, these streets are usually lined with cars on either side, so it's even harder to see. They could use the electronic, push button signs that light up and beep when a pedestrian wants to cross; which to be fair I've seen around, but not nearly as many as there should be.

I understand the city isn't going to reduce street parking, but at least implement better communication between drivers and pedestrians. The light up cross walks are a good start.

pmulard··on Keep a Log
Right now I'm trying to decide exactly how much information I should store in my knowledge base. There's a balance to keeping the base small enough to actually find the information needed and avoid it becoming a huge bloated mess.

For example, I keep separate Notion pages for each programming language I use. I also recently started learning Rust and have built up a page that includes even basics like how to declare a variable. The idea was it can exist as a beginner guide and someone can run through it relatively quickly and get a jist for the language.

But if I keep using the language, that information may eventually become obsolete (since I'll have it memorized) and will probably be a waste of space. Then as I advance through the language, I'll want to take note of more advanced concepts and maybe even some specific use cases of problems/solutions to code I'll have written.

I guess that's the beauty of editing a knowledge base over time. You can edit it to conform what's in currently in your head right now. So maybe in a few years from now, having those simple variable declarations will be a waste of space and I'll just want advanced topics covered.

Or maybe I'll walk away for a few years and need to look up basic syntax again.

pmulard··on Fasting Improves Physiological and Molecular Markers of Aging (2019)
I found my experience to be the opposite. I had clear mental focus, but felt physically drained of energy the entire time. I did a 3.5 day water fast, with the majority of my fluids from water/tea with salt for electrolytes.

My sleep was pretty terrible up until the last night, when I got a solid 8 hours without waking up once. I usually wake up 8-10 times a night, so this was a huge breakthrough. I also regained my energy on that last half day and felt incredible.

What type of fasting did you do, and what liquids did you drink?

pmulard··on I had to give a wrong answer to get the job (2017)
Thank you for giving away your book for free. I signed up for the mailing list and hope to purchase a copy when you're releasing printed versions.
pmulard··on Goodbye, Fleets
I use twitter daily and fleets was nothing more than an annoyance to me. I would click on someone's profile picture to view their profile, and it would automatically make me view their fleets instead. Even after watching them (or skipping through to the end), I would click it again and it would still take me to their fleets. Getting to their profile took several taps on tiny sections of the screen instead. The UX was pretty terrible imo and made me frustrated more than anything.

I like the idea of fleets, but I think it was implemented poorly. They just copied the same 'story' format that's been recycled 100x over. I think an alternative exists out there, twitter will just have to be a little more creative.

pmulard··on Ask HN: How aware are you about building decentralised software on blockchain?
They definitely could do a better job of marketing their pricing compared to the big three.

How about a decentralized, open source cloud?

pmulard··on Cryptography experts trash NFTs on first day of RSA Conference
Nothing. Just like nothing stopped Taylor Swift from rerecording her entire library to license her music herself. If artists sign their NFT rights away, that's on them.
pmulard··on Cryptography experts trash NFTs on first day of RSA Conference
I was really hoping they were going to dunk on the technology itself, like how the media of the NFT is lost if the platform hosting it is ever compromised - only the meta data is stored on the blockchain.

Instead, they just attacked the contents of the NFTs, akin to my mom telling me my pokemon cards are a waste of money all those years ago. Value is only whatever someone is willing to pay.
