pmcjones··on Eurisko – Source Code
I wonder what ChatGPT would say about it.
pmcjones··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
That's to replace the original deal from 2018 that the Delaware court invalidated.
pmcjones··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
But Waymo can't yet offer commercial service on freeways.
pmcjones··on Anatomy of Lisp by John Allen
The book was included in the ACM's Classic Book series, but a free PDF was not available until now. Backstory here: https://mcjones.org/dustydecks/john-allen-1937-2022-and-anat...
pmcjones··on The Collapse of Small Press Distribution
I've had a book on Lulu for almost 5 years, and that hasn't happened yet.
pmcjones··on Experience with an Uncommon Lisp (1986) [pdf]
Thanks again; added that (and fixed up previous edit fat-fingering).
pmcjones··on Experience with an Uncommon Lisp (1986) [pdf]
Thanks; I added citations for both of those.

More on YKTLISP (and its predecessor) here:

pmcjones··on Total Functional Programming (2004) [pdf]
Did anyone notice the fib function on the first page? It doesn't terminate:

fib :: Nat->Nat

fib 0 = 0

fib 1 = 1

fib (n+2) = fib (n+1) + fib (n+2)

The last line should be fib (n+2) = fib (n+1) + fib (n). The published version seems to have the same problem: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/82b4/ea72b89270c528006dd253...

pmcjones··on SQL Reunion: People, Projects, and Politics (1995)
I'm the editor of that document, and happy to answer questions.

pmcjones··on Kolibri OS: fits on a floppy disk, programmed using interrupts
Is it inspired by the baobab trees in Antoine de Saint Exupéry‘s _The Little Prince_? See page 15 of https://blogs.ubc.ca/edcp508/files/2016/02/TheLittlePrince.p...
pmcjones··on ISS astronauts watch Russian cargo ship burn up in Earth's atmosphere
Note it's normal for ISS "junk" to be burned up in returning cargo ships, but getting photos is not so common.
pmcjones··on The Medley Interlisp Project
Larry Masinter is playing a central role.
pmcjones··on Fortran 2023
Lots of information here: https://www.softwarepreservation.org/projects/FORTRAN/
pmcjones··on How did people deal with punch cards?
Here’s a story about disassembling a short binary card deck for an old time sharing system:

pmcjones··on SIMH – Old Computer Emulator
The time sharing system on the SDS 940 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Genie) led to TENEX on the PDP-10.
pmcjones··on Valley Fever Is a Growing Fungal Threat to Outdoor Workers
My mother contracted coccidioidal meningitis (CM) [1] around 1991, perhaps because her immune system was weakened from chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Apparently fluconazole was not widely used at this point, and they treated her with Amphotericin B via intrathecal delivery, but the treatment was unsuccessful and she died. Apparently treatment is now more successful.

pmcjones··on The Power of Prolog

Knuth has been saying interesting things for a very long time. He began _The Art of Computer Programming_ project in 1962.
pmcjones··on Dennis Austin, developer of PowerPoint, has died
Almost as good as Severe Tire Damage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severe_Tire_Damage_(band)
pmcjones··on Dennis Austin, developer of PowerPoint, has died
Dennis and I overlapped at Tandem Computers in the early 1980s, but we didn't meet until 2003, when we were both members of a small private club of computer geezers. In addition to being a great software designer he was one of the nicest and most thoughtful people I've ever met.
pmcjones··on Explaining the Postgres iceberg
No, it was being explored in the context of System R at IBM San Jose Research -- see this link in the Wikipedia article: http://www.mcjones.org/System_R/SQL_Reunion_95/sqlr95-System...

Apollo 11 landed on July 20, 1969, so just over 8 years after the main speech at the joint session.
pmcjones··on IBM PL/S Machine-oriented programming language [pdf]
Correct. We used PL/S for the RSS, which was the lower layer of System R, the first SQL database. See https://mcjones.org/System_R/ and https://mcjones.org/System_R/SQL_Reunion_95/index.html
pmcjones··on Couples with joint checking accounts are happier
I’ve been married for 53 years; we share our accounts and have never had any problems.
