plugger··on Rivian R2: Electric Mid-Size SUV
It's the best of both worlds as you can drive it EV only for short distances but still have the ability to drive longer distances. As said above, the engine is only to charge the battery.
plugger··on Rivian R2: Electric Mid-Size SUV
It's a HEV, not a BEV. But it's an EV none the less. It has the ability to drive ~100km on battery only, and the engine doesn't drive the wheels, it's used to recharge the battery.

I feel quite bad for people living in the United States. Despite the constant refrain about freedom y'all are actually pretty hindered when it comes to reasonably priced EVs. On Saturday I put a down on a BYD Shark 6 truck. Hopefully I'll collect it Friday, if not early next week. I'm paying $41,200 USD for the thing brand new. I saw a MotorTrend review of it last week, they flew down to Mexico City to test one out. The entry level pricing there is $50,060 USD. Here in Australia they're called the "Raptor Killer" as they will take Ford Ranger Raptors off the line and cost a bit more than half the price of the Raptor.
plugger··on The world heard JD Vance being booed at the Olympics. Except for viewers in USA
Could be worse, at least they don't have to choose between financial ruin or a healthy life.
plugger··on Cannabis usage in older adults linked to larger brain, better cognitive function
> Anthropologists in the future will be studying the effects of drastically increased marijuana consumption on society for decades in the future.

This information is already readily available by studying the Rastafari in Jamaica. If there were serious negative impacts from daily consumption over a lifetime it would have been apparent in that cohort for decades.

This blogger is the author of bettercap, safe to say they're fairly across Github
plugger··on Scientific and Technical Amateur Radio
I don't think most of this data is published, but you might be able to get access to AMSAT-DL data from their 20m dish in Bochum. https://amsat-dl.org/en/20-meter-antenna/
plugger··on Scientific and Technical Amateur Radio
Oh dear, you're correct. the 60cm antennas are on the sats themselves. Still, I might be able to get enough signal to see carrier, and maybe more given they'll be coming at us instead of going away next time around.
plugger··on Scientific and Technical Amateur Radio
I look forward to Escapade Blue and Gold returning, I plan to have a look at them with my X band setup. I'm running a 1.2m offset, which is significantly larger than the 60cm Daniel was using here.
plugger··on A Second Look at Geolocation and Starlink
I'm a Starlink user technically, but haven't had my service enabled for over 3 years. People like me might help account for this discrepancy.
plugger··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
I use Firefox + uBlock Origin on both Linux (Debian 12) and on Android to watch Youtube without ads and it works without issue.
plugger··on Space junk falls on Western Australian minesite
I would like to think most of that would have been consumed, the thing was still on fire when it hit the ground.
plugger··on Space junk falls on Western Australian minesite
Because these photos were taken by miners out in the middle of nowhere with their phones.
plugger··on Meta erases Gaza journalist's Instagram
I don't believe the Internet Archive would be described as social media. I do believe the quote you provided is referring to the Instagram posts being archived on the Internet Archive, not that the journalist in question expected Instagram to be a sound archive strategy. It's the fact that the posts disappeared on archive.org that's a concern imho, not that Meta arbitrarily deleted a profile.
plugger··on SatDump team attempts to fill gap in weather forecasting
The US DoD has stated it plans to stop disseminating products from the DMSP constellation that is critical to hurricane forecasting by August. The SatDump team has since spent significant efforts to build out the decoder.
plugger··on El Salvador Tells UN That US Has "Exclusive" Jurisdiction over Detainees
> It has an endless losing streak against barely armed but very angry ragtag groups of peasants.

Internationally. Domestically the US is 1 for 1 in this space as evidenced by the US Civil war.

plugger··on US economy shrank 0.5% in the first quarter, worse than earlier estimates
Sorry, but the widely accepted definition of a technical recession is typically identified by two consecutive quarters of negative growth in real gross domestic product (GDP). Tuesday is the cut off date for the quarter and that will determine if the US is in technical recession.
plugger··on Dolphin whistle decoders win $100k interspecies communication prize
No offense, but this was built off 4 decades of actual scientific research and had nothing to do with AI.
plugger··on Even Republicans are falling out of love with Tesla
The stock is down nearly 34% this year. Would you be happy with those metrics as an investor and/or board member? If the CEO of a company you invest in decided to alienate the majority of said company's customer base, would you be happy as an board member?
plugger··on Seth Rogen Speaks Truth to Billionaires, Gets Censored for It
> Electing a comic may sound like a joke, but I'm willing to consider anyone who can demonstrate intellect and empathy.

yea, Zelenskyy immediately comes to mind.

plugger··on The reasons SpaceX won nearly all recent military launch contracts
The primary reason for SpaceX having such a high launch rate is Starlink/Starshield. These launches are largely identical to one another, and are targeting LEO altitudes. The above comments are factually correct. Historically ULA has been the launch provider of choice for deep space missions.
plugger··on France's new high-speed train has Americans asking: Why can't we have that?
I took the TGV from Munich to Dijon with a train change in Strasbourg in December and we hit 315km/h on the Strasbourg to Dijon leg of the trip.
plugger··on Wyvern's Open Satellite Feed
And I guess the other thing to mention is that x band data often adds up real quick, so it's nowhere near as prevalent in full resolution online. I'm basically surrounded by forest and only get sync on Chinese LEO sats at maybe 35°+ north and then lose sync due to the forest at ~30° elevation south. My resulting true color composites are routinely 400-500MB. Someone with clear LoS to either horizon can easily produce composites that are over 1GB per image.
plugger··on Wyvern's Open Satellite Feed
Twitter, Derek's SGC's discord (https://discord.gg/7fFFzNsPEF), and Alan's Matrix server are the three main places to find imagery. That and people's own personal web sites. Here's mine. https://geostation.io/ Please don't criticize my site too much, I've not updated it for ages and historically I used it as a place to dump output from my geostationary satellite stations.
plugger··on Wyvern's Open Satellite Feed
I wouldn't say it's mostly HAMs. More that it's a small community of largely European teenagers and 20 somethings. I say that as someone who found their way into the hobby back during covid and now have up and running L, S, and X band setups.
plugger··on How Many School Shootings? All Incidents from 1966-Present
I don't think most Americans or non-Americans really pay too much attention to school shootings one way or another. But when they see semi-regular news of shootings at schools resulting in large amounts of children being slain they're inclined to think something is wrong in the US. And when it comes to the pervasiveness of US gun culture and how easy it is to get tooled up over there, they're not wrong. Regardless of implied stat inflation, the US is still the undisputed school shooting champion of the world.

plugger··on Carnarvon's NASA satellite dish receives first signal in almost 40 years
Canarvon is over a 9 hour drive from Perth, and the ABC in the regions is on a shoestring budget as our conservatives think it better to give newstainment talking heads money when compared to actually funding the state backed news broadcaster.

We also have SKA deployments out here, the Murchison observatory that's part of SKA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murchison_Radio-astronomy_Obse...

And we have the Pawsey Supercomputer that is working through a lot of the SKA data. https://pawsey.org.au/
